And all the paths were overgrown,
When the priests of pride say there is no other way,
I tilled the sorrows of stone.
I did not believe because I could not see,
Though you came to me in the night.
When the dawn seemed forever lost,
You showed me your love in the light of the stars...
Cast your eyes on the ocean,
Cast your soul to the sea,
When the dark night seems endless,
Please remember me...
Then the mountain rose before me,

Meaningful work or coercion?
Sent to the Oregonian, Feb. 19
Joanne Yatvin's description of how "Meaningful work keeps students in
school," (Feb. 18) includes small class sizes, sports teams that allowed
all comers to join and play, teacher collaboration with time to meet during
the school day, plays and musical events that included all interested
students, emphasis on building classroom community, and school wide
projects. Yatvin notes that "we devoted our thinking, actions and
resources toward making our school a place where students wanted to be
every day and be successful."

Thursday Linkage – Ukraine Crisis Edition
I arrived in Geneva yesterday morning to give a couple of talks, and I

Auckland resident Rick Splinter has had his request for speaking rights at
the Governing Body meeting of 27 February 2014 declined. The request has

What democracy do we really have in Auckland politics if a private

The official reason for the application to speak being declined was

QUOTE OF THE DAY: On “Giving Back”
"Here’s another gigantic myth about capitalism: That those who
innovate and create owe others for the fact they made a lot of
money. In other words, they create something that’s so valuable,
that so many people need and wish to purchase, that they end up

Give back? What did they take? If I take your car, I should give it

THE PRESS CORPS [HEART] ACCUSERS: An act of astounding misconduct!
*WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2014*
*Part 3—What Chris Matthews did:* As a matter of theory, journalists aren’t
supposed to fall in love with accusers.
Sometimes, accusers’ claims are false, whether by design or by error. For
that reason, journalists should approach their claims with appropriate
caution.
When that isn’t done, the results can be quite bad. Case in point:
Back in the late 1990s, the mainstream press corps fell in love with a
string of high-profile accusers. Their accusations were assumed to be true,
even when they were false.
One such accuser was Kathleen Willey. In Marc... more »

Ukraine: Hellish War-Zone In A European Capital
Earlier last December we looked at a tragic mess unfolding in slow
motionin Ukraine. Back then there were already people demanding
revolution, not
reform. Simple look: the conservatives, backed by Russia, don't want
anything to do with the EU. The more forward-looking Ukrainians want to
break free of the Russian orbit and join the EU. The repressive and
authoritarian government of the uber-corrupt Viktor Yanukovych is making
the country so toxic in the minds of EU citizens that they forget about
admitting Ukraine altogether. Even though it is the biggest country in
Europe and even... more »

White Specks of Radiation at Fukushima
Majia's Blog - 17 hours ago
NHK has a very interesting documentary (hat tip Enenews) on the
contaminated water at the Daiichi site:
Fukushima Daiichi's Hidden Crisis: http://vimeo.com/8559542
[Majia's summary] A robot was sent into one of the reactor's outer
containment vessels and the water was found to be highly radioactive there,
indicating cracks in all levels of containment. What is particularly
relevant is NHK's description of the white flecks in the water as caused by
radiation:

China Demands Japanese Explanation About "That Other Plutonium" ( Ah , someone is finally questioning Japan about its secret nuclear program ) - - If a country claims that it sticks by the three non-nuclear principles but at same time hoards far more nuclear materials than it needs, including a massive amount of weapon-grade plutonium, the world has good reason to ask why ...... If the Japanese government truly wants to play a constructive role for regional stability, it should honestly explain its reluctance to the world and return the stored nuclear materials as soon as possible. After all, Abe and his cabinet have already caused too much trouble to regional peace and stability.

The CBO Whiffs on the Minimum Wage
The
Congressional Budget Office has just issued a report on the minimum
wagethat is a real head-scratcher. Analyzing proposals to raise the
minimum
wage to $9.00 or $10.10 per hour, it concludes in the latter case that
there would be 500,000 fewer jobs in the second half of 2016 than there
would be under current law (100,000 fewer for $9.00/hr.).
Predictably, conservatives have seized on this number as proof that the
minimum wage is a "job killer." Even liberal media, such as Talking
