What I Have Been Reading: Princess in the Opal Mask, The Elite and Crown of Midnight
Debra Hawkins at Housewife Eclectic - 9 minutes ago
This retelling of Man in the Iron Mask is just as gripping as the original
story, with lots of character and plot elements of its own. Princess Wilha
knows what her face looks like, but no one else around her does. Since her
birth she has been forced to wear an opal mask, concealing what lays
beneath. The few times she has dared to show anybody her face, they have
been abruptly dismissed from the palace. There are all sorts of rumors
flying around, that her face is deformed, that one look from her can kill,
that one look can heal, but when Princess Wilha looks beneath the mask, all... more »

Another Former KIPP Teacher Steps Forward

*A former KIPP teacher in New Orleans finds her voice*
I was never much of a champion [reference to *Teach Like a Champion*, Doug
Lemov's exhausting checklist that serves as a bible for TFA and KIPP], to
be honest. KIPP defines a successful teacher as someone who keeps children
quiet, teaches children how to answer each question on a test composed of
arbitrary questions, and then produces high scores on this test. Mind you,
I was teaching Pre-K and then kindergarten at a KIPP school in New
Orleans—and these were still the metrics by which I was being evaluated.

EU bans "butter spread" in Czechia
Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 1 day ago
Maoist comrade Barroso is celebrating another victory in his Blitzkrieg
against freedom in Europe.
In 1977, a creamery in Liberec, North Bohemia began to produce the
traditional butter spread known as "pomazánkové máslo" which became an
instant hit with the Czechoslovak consumers (although the legend wouldn't
ever spread abroad). Other dairies joined and began to produce it. The
popular product survived the fall of communism, of course.
Let me mention that in the Czech language, "pomazánkové" is an adjective
derived from the noun "pomazánka", a "spread"; "pomazánka" itself is

"Josh Lanning has the worst job"
A year or so ago, I found myself at the fabulous Beverly Hills restaurant
of one of the world's most celebrated chefs, José Andrés, The Bazaar. But
my dining companion was even more famous-- perhaps infamous-- than Andrés
who has won James Beard awards and who beat Bobby Flay on *Top Chef*. My
dining companion's name and face had been splashed all over the media a few
years before for inappropriate behavior with underage boys-- while he was a
congressman. So why was I having dinner with a Republican ex-Congressman at
The Bazaar? He wanted to feel me o... more »

Yesterday, Jim Flaherty signalled that he is packing his bags. In
announcing his opposition to income splitting, he placed himself in direct
opposition to his boss and the men, like Jason Kenny, who hope to replace
the prime minister -- if and when he retires. Flaherty also became a target
for social conservatives -- mainly evangelical Christians -- whose vote
Harper bought with his promise to split incomes. Andrew Jackson writes:
Evangelical Christian institutions in particular had close ties to the
Reform Party and have maintained and even increased their influence on

Assault on California Power Station Raises Alarm on Potential for Terrorism ....April 2013 Sniper Attack Knocked Out Substation, Raises Concern for Country's Power Grid . Just me by anyone wonder why this attack was blared across the major media including TV and newspapers ? This was a precision terror attack and it doesn't look like " Al Qaeda " had anything to do with this one ! Maybe because DHS is still busy portraying gun owners as nut cases and bio weapon threats ! LIGHTS OUT FOR NSA? MARYLAND LAWMAKERS PUSH TO CUT WATER, ELECTRICITY TO SPY AGENCY HEADQUARTERS - other event watch for Maryland ..... SAN JOSE, Calif.—The attack began just before 1 a.m. on April 16 last year,
when someone slipped into an underground vault not far from a busy freeway
and cut telephone cables.
Within half an hour, snipers opened fire on a nearby electrical substation.
Shooting for 19 minutes, they surgically knocked out 17 giant transformers
that funnel power to Silicon Valley. A minu... more »

It's a long video. You can't afford to miss it. The world has changed when
we weren't looking.
If that's too long to watch, and too full of marketing hype, here's how it
works.

*The great statins divide: As go-ahead's given for one in four adults to be
offered heart drug, one doctor says this mass pill-popping is folly...*
Dr Malhotra
The man in my consulting room was in his mid-50s and had arrived
complaining of severe chest pain. ‘I’ve had it for a while now, doctor,’ he
said, grimacing, ‘it won’t go away.’
I glanced at his notes — an angiogram had showed that his heart was fine,
while an endoscopy had revealed there was nothing untoward going on in his
oesophagus or stomach. Then I asked what drugs he was taking regularly.
‘Well, nothing really . . .... more »
The War on the First Amendment
Donn Marten at Carrying a Flag - 1 day ago
With our society now so saturation bombed by decades of rampant militarism
to the point where everything has become a cliché that invokes combat – the
WAR on terror, the WAR on poverty, the WAR on drugs, the WAR on women etc.
we now should be aware of the Obama administration’s WAR on the First
Amendment. The War on the First Amendment specifically applies to the
portion that establishes the freedom of the press. While truth-telling has
always been an enemy of a secretive state determined to use all of the
tools in the shed to suppress those who would expose criminality and

First Aid Holistic Essentials
By Dr. David Levi, ND
*The Healthy Home Economist, 11 February 2014*
Band-aids, Neosporin, Tylenol, heating pad, etc. are the items you’ll find
in a conventional *first aid kit*. Well, if you have children, you’re going
need a lot more than that!
This is where homeopathy comes into the picture.
As a Naturopathic Doctor, I consider homeopathy to be the best home remedy
modality for acute (as opposed to chronic) situations, particularly with
children. Homeopathic remedies can be found at most healthfood stores, they
are inexpensive, and those tiny s... more »
