J. D. Bernal on Geoengineering and Climate Change

noreply@blogger.com (Roger Pielke, Jr.) at Roger Pielke Jr.'s Blog - 2 minutes ago
I am re-reading J. D. Bernal's 1939 classic, *The Social Function of Scienc*e. In it I found this interesting passage on geoengineering and climate change: He writes of the future tasks of science and explains (pp. 379-380): It will no longer be a question of adapting man to the world but the world to man. For instance, the present Arctic with its wastes of tundra, glacier, and sea ice is a legacy of the geological accident of the Ice Age. It will disappear in time, leaving the world a much pleasanter place, but there is no reason why man should not hasten the process. By an intelli... more »

From Ken Derstine: *DN Editorial: CONTROL ISSUES: Is the state using charter rules to help kill Philly's school district? | Philadelphia Daily News* Last week, the School District of Philadelphia confirmed what it feared back in November: It is facing an extra $25 million in unbudgeted costs associated with increased enrollment in charter schools. Charters have enrolled 1,600 more students than allowed by their agreements with the district. As if we needed another example, this situation is a perfect illustration of the lack of a coherent strategy for public education in the state.... more »

*R v RAS,* 2014 ABCA 56: [9] In assessing whether a verdict is unreasonable, a court must, to some extent, re-examine and re-weigh the evidence, but ultimately the test is whether the verdict can be supported on the record. Democratic Deception? An Elegantly Simple Way to Revolutionize Government

Here's some analysis to live by. If you think you'd like to live in a country governed by truth tellers. Deception is the lifeblood of our political system. A system claiming to work for the best interests of the people, while in fact largely working for corporate special interests, must necessarily be riddled with elaborate lies and deception. For the last few weeks, I have watched and listened to reports about "fake" snow falling all over North America, with the reports about snow not acting like snow in the eastern parts of the United States... I have analysed the reports, and yes, many are wrong due to the methods of testing conducted to show whether or not the snow is real or "fake"... Many of the tests were automatically invalid due to the fact that the testers used Butane lighters which create very poor combustion, and will definitely leave a smelly residue on the "snow".... How did Jeremy Isaacs’ daring, visionary child of 1982 grow into the shameless, ratings-chasing harlot of 2014? The answer is obvious enough. Since television went multichannel, and advertising revenue was spread thinner than Marmite, innovative commercial television has all but died. Forgive my harking back to a golden age, but there is good reason to see the franchise arrangements of mid-80’s as just that. There is a problem with those numbers: they don't really exist (as for the non-impact of "the weather" on jobs weshowed previously that the number of people "*not at work due to weat... more »

The Party's Over

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 15 hours ago
One of the great political feats of the late 20th Century was the manufacture by billionaires of a right-wing cabal of crackpots-under-contract so unabashedly fascist that anyone sane and still voting would be left with a single alternative, which, of course, is the now-familiar brand of corporate, anti-democratic dramaturgy known as the Democratic Party. It's time for something else, and in the short 18 minute film below, a case is made for it. Watch and learn to think, organize, and act. You might say--the Party's over:

"What’s bad for Main Street and good for Wall Street in the short term is bad for both in the long term" (Robert Reich)

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 15 hours ago
*by Ken* We all know -- don't we? -- that watching the stock market provides a reflection of certain factors in the state of the economy, it's far from any kind of reasonable *measure* of the economy. Which is the reality that underlies Robert Reich's blogpost "Why the Lousy Jobs Report Boosted Wall Street" (which I read via Nation of Change). The stock market surged yesterday after the lousy jobs report. The Dow soared 160 points Friday, while the S&P 500, and Nasdaq also rose. How can bad news on Main Street (only 113,000 jobs were created in January, on top of a meager 74,000 ... more »

EARTH FROM MARS / A SMALL STAGE IN A COSMIC ARENA

Allen L Roland, Ph.D at Allen L Roland's Weblog - 16 hours ago
*This view of the twilight sky and Martian horizon, taken by NASA's Mars rover Curiosity, includes Earth as the brightest point of light in the night sky. Earth is a little left of center in the image, and our moon is just below Earth. A human observer with normal vision, if standing on Mars, could easily see Earth and the moon as two distinct, bright "evening stars."* *Whenever I see a picture like this I am deeply humbled and I realize that my life's purpose on this small stage in this vast cosmic arena must be profoundly obvious and simple. As such, my life's purpose was to fin... more »

#CCLS: Moratorium, Or Delaying the Inevitable?

Chris Cerrone at @ THE CHALK FACE - 17 hours ago
From the massive amount of media coverage lately I am sure you have heard the NYS legislature is debating placing a “moratorium” on consequences from Common Core testing. The discussion revolves around teachers, principals, and schools not being punished for low scores while New York slows down the implementation of the Common Core. Many questions […]

*“Crybabies of the 1 Percent: * *The Rich Complain While Getting Away With Everything”* By Paul Campos "More than half a century ago, “West Side Story” satirized the idea that what was then known as juvenile delinquency was a product of poverty and the psychological maladjustments it produced, and that therefore “this boy don’t need a judge, he needs an analyst’s care.” Since then, America has been busy transforming itself into an unabashed plutocracy: while median household income has barely budged since the mid-1960s, the annual income of the top 1 percent has increased by an aver... more »

Will The Republican Wing Of The Democratic Party Continue To Dominate?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 19 hours ago
Late last night, we looked at the uncomfortable fact that progressives are *not* in control of the Democratic Party and that their values and ideals more often than not take a backseat to the career-driven needs of centrists and corrupted corporate shills. The Democratic Establishment, the Philly Machine, the cash-laden Republican wing of the Democratic Party and even the Clintons are backing a candidate in the hot PA-13 primary, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, who advocates cutting Social Security over the most progressive political leader in the state of Pennsylvania, state Senati... more »

*Guest post by Stephen Berry* As Affordable Auckland Leader and organiser of the Len Brown Stand Down March, I have now begun a full-time two-week campaign to promote the Len Brown Stand Down March – about which I am heartily encouraged by the feedback of residents and ratepayers around Auckland. Will Ryan and I have been hitting the pavements of Auckland and I attended Sunday’s Big Gay Out. The feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly in favour of Len Brown standing down. Yesterday I pressed the flesh with attendees of the Big Gay out, experiencing first-hand the groun... more »

Love Quest : Day 2 - The Cabin

Sophia Love at AMERICAN KABUKI - 20 hours ago
You’ve reached a critical moment for yourself. There are parts of you eating away at your core. You’ve been unaware of them until now. Why now? Because you’ve upgraded and improved. In order for the new stuff to stand strong and to last, anything that doesn’t *support *it – works to *dismantle*it. Our family owns property in the mountains and on it has always stood what we affectionately called “the cabin”. It was little more than a tar paper shack with an outhouse. Five years ago we tore it down. In its place now stands a double-wide trailer complete with steps and a deck... more »

Wagner rides to rescue

[image: Neil Wagner is pumped after dismissing Zaheer Khan, New Zealand v India, 1st Test, Auckland, 4th day, February 9, 2014] How cool was that win! And how cool is it being the only test team having Wagner thundering in taking scalps. NZ’s test cricketers made it hard for themselves, but Wagner rode to the rescue yesterday with an aggressive 10-over spell with an old ball that broke the 126-run third-wicket stand of Kohli and Dhawan, and then came back to take the crucial wicket of anchor-batsman MS Donhi with the newish ball. What makes Paddy panic

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 22 hours ago
Just another bite-sized post about Paddy O'Connell's apparent propensity to panic when someone picks on the Labour Party... This morning's *Broadcasting House* saw our Paddy egging on one Conservative MP, Richard Benyon, to attack another Conservative MP Ian Liddell-Grainger (for attacking the Environment Agency's Lord Chris Smith). Paddy let Mr Benyon absolutely slate Mr Liddell-Grainger without demur or interruption, but the second Mr Benyon began criticising the actions of the last Labour government in came that firm yet nervous 'OK' from Paddy that always arrives the instant La... more »

Book review: The Almond Tree

Left I on the News at Left I on the News - 22 hours ago
Two years ago I wrote a review of a novel called "Mornings in Jenin" by Palestinian Susan Abulhawa. This past week I had the opportunity to read another novel, "The Almond Tree," by Jewish-American Michelle Cohen Corasanti. Remarkably, although the plots of the two novels are completely different, and of course the authors come from very different backgrounds, the review I wrote for "Mornings in Jenin" (reproduced below) is almost word-for-word applicable to "The Almond Tree." The time period covered by the two novels is slightly different ("The Almond Tree" starts in 1955 and conti... more »

50 Years Ago Today: The Beatles

*Noah wrote this piece for the 50th anniversary, on December 26, of Capitol Records' release of their first Beatles record. But of course the date most people remember is the Fab Foursome's tumultuous U.S. TV debut on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964 -- by coincidence also a Sunday. It would seem a shame not to take advantage of that 50th anniversary to revisit this special reminiscence.* *On December 26, 1963, hastily pushed up in response to public demand,* *Capitol Records released their first Beatles record, a single of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" backed with "I Saw Her ... more »

Olympics 2014: Where Everyone Is a Corporate Trademark

Karen Garcia at Sardonicky - 1 day ago
I tuned in to the Olympics this weekend and got pretty much what I deserved: a relentless onslaught of commercial odes to global capitalism interspersed with a few carefully edited moments of actual athletic competition. The actual athletes highlighted were invariably Americans. (Or better yet, refugees from lesser countries who don't enjoy our Freedoms). And NBC and its corporate sponsors are making sure that the competitors are spending as much air-time being shills for consumer products as they are skiing and skating. So, what's more off-putting? Malfunctioning toilets and brown ... more »
