TV Watch: Please, please, don't watch "Million Dollar Listing" on account of anything I'm about to say

I'm not proud of this. Still, maybe it's something we ought to talk about. It started with the original version of *MDL*, which is to say the version that's now called *Million Dollar Listing L.A.* or something like that, now that there's a *Million Dollar Listing New York*. Europe Is Unleashing Its Bloodthirsty Jihadists On Syria

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 1 hour ago
European right-wingers have been screaming ever since the false flag 9/11 attacks that Muslims would invade Europe and impose Sharia, behead people, and generally make life hell for everyone. But the reverse is happening. Brainwashed "Muslims" in European countries are invading Syria to impose Sharia, behead people, and generally make life hell for everyone except their own kind. Ironic, isn't it? There have hardly been any terrorists coming over from Muslim countries to the West to wreak havoc, but Europe can't control its small pool of bloodthirsty Jihadists. It is unleashing the... more »

You know who's really reading your email?

Hackers and thieves. Finding the assumption that the government is really reading all our email somewhat amusing. Atrios says there's 25K or maybe up to 50K NSA employees. He's wondering what they do. Willing to guess lots of them are inventing new algorithms to extrapolate patterns from metadata. Lots more on the legal team figuring how to get warrants based on the data no one is allowed to talk about. Not saying that's not a problem but I doubt they have thousands of people reading millions of emails about your upcoming big event or what your kids are doing or trash talking your mu... more »

Another Phony Jobs Report From A Government That Lies About Everything

Mark Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 13 hours ago
image source Paul Craig Roberts June 7, 2013. The payroll jobs report for May released today continues the fantasy. Goods producing jobs declined, with manufacturing losing another 4,000 jobs, but the New Economy produced 179,000 service jobs. Are these jobs the high-powered, high-wage “innovation jobs” that economists promised would be our reward from Globalism. I’m afraid not. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the jobs created are the usual lowly paid non-exportable domestic service jobs–the jobs of a third world country. Retail trade accounts for 27,700 of the jobs. ... more »

Crowdsourcing and Criminal Justice

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 13 hours ago
Crowdsourcing and the criminal justice system have obvious but usually overlooked links. To a degree that is because crowdsourcing has been seamlessly integrated into police investigation for so long that it is invisible. But for the practicing lawyer modern crowdsourcing techniques allow for insights and legal precedents rapidly and inexpensively; the wisdom of crowds can have great value. First, however, we need to define what is meant by crowdsourcing. Jeff Howe, who coined the term (with Mark Robinson) says: "Simply defined, crowdsourcing represents the act of a company or ... more »

As the School District of Philadelphia prepares to layoff 3,783 employees - eliminate athletics , all clubs , all librarians , all counselors , all art and music teachers , noontime aides , assistant principals , secretaries......You have a principal and a core group of teachers if this budget that would make the Troika cringe actually comes to pass .....Draconian cuts across the entire system as 30 schools in total will have been closed by September 2013 , with 23 in the dock for closure presently ....... In light of these cuts , sad to see that the State of Pennsylvania plans to build two new prisons ! Priorities - school to prison pipeline ? .....

I discovered some kind of wonderful today...

Sandra Guzman at Sandra Guzman - 1 day ago
That even when it rains, birds have a reason to sing. ~ When it rains, there are two kinds of people: those who let it rain on them or those who run for cover. I used to be the latter. Protecting my hair, which I blow dried straight, was my main priority. Rain was an annoyance and only pretty looking at it from the inside out. These days though, I not only embrace the rain, but celebrate it. That simple shift in perspective has resulted in big changes-- and a whole new world has opened up. As buckets came down the city that never sleeps today, rather than stay inside all day, I car... more »

At times I feel life really is like a magical ride on the magic mushroom express, a one-way ticket down the rabbit hole, especially here in British Columbia....Let`s talk natural gas, particularly LNG.. Maybe, just maybe The Straight Goods has finally caught the attention of the mainstream media, however, they would never admit it.. Justine Hunter and Vaughn Palmer have both weighed in on LNG futures in the last couple of days, unfortunately they both offered up very thin gruel on the topic..Justine Hunter muses about Site C dam not being online(if built at all) until 2023, as in... more »

Evidence of alcoholism is akin to that of bad character and ought not to be admitted without a voir dire

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
R. v. G.S., 2013 NUCA 5 holds evidence of alcoholism is akin to that of bad character and ought not to be admitted without a voir dire: [33] As held in R v Rockey, 1995 CanLII 3503 (ON CA), [1995] SCCA No 288, 99 CCC (3d) 31 [Rockey], the failure of the Trial Judge to hold a voir dire to determine the admissibility of the drinking history of the appellant was an error of law. The proper approach is to determine what the right conclusion of law would have been. If the conclusion is the evidence would have been admitted then the error had no effect on the verdict. If the Cour... more »

I unexpectedly ended up offline all day. I'm cruising the headlines and see it's outrage city out there. Everybody all hyped up about anonymous leaks regarding domestic surveillance and all I can say is if we had seen this level of hysteria when Bush was caught doing this crap without a warrant, the damn program would never have been continued. It was all about respect for the office, and support the War President then and Downing St memos? WTF did they know? Confidential to anti-educationalist "reformers": If you're pretending not to be a right-wing stooge, be careful about hobnobbing with other RWS's

*This video featuring 11-year-old Marcel Neergaard and his parents helped set in motion the revocation of StudentsFirst's "Educator of the Year" award to Tennessee's energetically homophobic State Rep. John Ragan.* *by Ken* There's a certain entertainment value in the spectacle of right-wing stooges pretending not to be right-wing stooges. Some of them are better at it than others, naturally. Like term-limited outgoing VA Gov. Bob McDonnell, who until recently has had more success than he deserved at parlaying his stylish coiffeur and polished demeanor into an image of noncrazines... more »

"The sentiment of many Americans is that there's little intrinsic value in studying a map of a place you're already at," noted Weiss. "It'd be like driving to Graceland and then asking for directions once you've arrived. Not much point." Shirley Matheson, a part-time Arby's employee residing in Dayton, Ohio, agreed with Weiss's assessment. "I live in the U.S.A.,... more »

Interestingly, many people only become aware of their subconscious mind’s push-button programs when their own “buttons are pushed” by the actions of others. Actually, the entire image of pushing buttons is far too slow and linear to describe the awesome data processing capacity of the subconscious mind. It has been estimated tha... more »

"Yet" by Chet Raymo "I mentioned here several times recently Ursula Goodenough's "The Sacred Depths of Nature." I just noticed a line in the book that I underlined when I first read it a dozen years ago: "It's all very complicated." It's in the chapter on Sexuality, and we all know that sex is complicated. However, the same sentence might have been in any other chapter of the book - Origins of Life, say, or Awareness, or Emotions and Meaning, or Multicellularity and Death. It's all very complicated, and the more we learn about it all, the more complicated it gets. And anyone wh... more »

They voice their belief, noisily or subtly, that their difficulties represent a unique kind of affliction that should not be and that has somehow been especially visited upon them, or else upon their families, their tribe, their class, their nation, their race or even their species, and not upon others.
