Australian Government Bans Political Comment on Twitter
In early 2013, Twitter began actively censoring Australian tweets at the direct request of the government, making Australia “the first modern democracy to identify, filter and ban free speech whilst not in a state of War,” according to a March 15, 2013 report from Polliter.com.
A subsequent Polliter report indicates that “the Prime Minister’s own ‘public record of communications via Twitter’ @PMOPressOffice has been proven to be filtering anti-Labor comment, and suspending users that interact on that site.”Is GE Food Making Pigs Sick?
- The uteri of GE-fed pigs were 25 percent heavier than those of non-GE-fed pigs.
- Pigs fed GE feed had a higher rate of severe stomach inflammation: 32 percent of GE-fed pigs versus 12 percent of non-GE-fed pigs exhibited this problem. The trend was more profound for males. Serious stomach inflammation was found in 4 times as many GE-fed males than non-GE-fed males and in 2 times as many GE-fed females than non-GE-fed females.

Ed Markey
I haven't done a post yet on the new Senator from Massachusetts, mainly
because there was no surprise here, and he's presumably about as
predictable a new Senator as is possible.
I have talked about how Ed Markey is a setback for getting the Senate to be
younger, but if you're looking for trivia, Eric Ostermeier has plenty more:
about older Senators winning special elections, and about Markey's new
record for longest House service before moving to the Senate.
I don't have much to say substantively about Markey. I suspect he'll be a
disappointing Senator because he'll find it diffic... more »

NDP, Liberals - Your Summer Project
Thanks to Senator Hugh Segal, the opposition parties have a wonderful
opportunity to do something useful over the summer recess - they can rally
to the defence of Canadian labour and every working man and woman in the

Segal has reportedly infuriated the Harper regime by introducing an

senators that effectively guts radical Tory MP Russ Hiebert's bill to
compel union disclosure.
The bill now goes back to the Commons this fall for reconsideration. That

Comical Plutocrat Blows Smoke At Greenwald
When it comes to the latest conspiracy theories, I usually back away out of
pure rational instinct. But the smear campaign currently in full swing

The smears against Edward Snowden started predictably and immediately. But
the campaign against the messenger of the messenger took awhile, mainly

profile has been rising by the day. David Gregory got the ball rolling last
Sunday, and landed in the gutter. (see thi... more »

Alberta is facing three immediate and potentially lasting problems - the

By some accounts, the Carbon Bubble dilemma worsened yesterday with

The day that silver traders have been waiting for has arrived. On

Massive Coronal Hole: Solar Wind Will Hit Earth June 29th-30
credit: SDO/AIA Chris Carrington
A massive coronal hole straddling the Sun’s equator is sending out a highly
charged solar wind that will hit the Earth's magnetic field square on.
Solar winds are a continuous stream of ions, charged particles. The coronal
hole allows the particles to escape instead of looping back down to the
Suns surface. The winds from coronal holes take a few days to reach Earth,
and due to the Sun's rotation they emanate out in a ‘pinwheel’ fashion as
they pass through the solar system.
It’s the buffering of the Earth's magnetic field that gives rise to

Timesman mourns the decline in English majors!
*WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26, 2013*
*Fails to review their past efforts:* This Sunday, we were struck by Verlyn
Klinkenborg’s lament for the English major.
Klinkenborg teaches non-fiction writing. He seems like a good, genial
person. Despite these facts, he has been part of the New York Times
editorial board since 1997.
In a way, that affiliation was the source of our puzzlement.
In this weekend’s Sunday Review, Klinkenborg offered a well-written lament
for the dwindling English major. As it turns out, the English major is
going the way of all flesh:

Rule books
The head of the BBC's newsroom Mary Hockaday recently told *Newswatch*'s
Samira
Ahmed, *"We don't tell our reporters. We don't give them a sort of rule
book for language"*. She said that in the wake of the Oxford grooming
trial, when the BBC News at Six had been criticised by viewers for
failing
to use the word 'Muslim'.
As Sue pointed out a couple of days ago, however, the BBC certainly
*does*have rule books for its reporters vis-à-vis language - such as its
suggested
language guide for coverage of Israel and the Palestinians.
Mary Hockaday's comment came back to me again as I ... more »

SCOTUS deals big blow to DOMA
Good day to be a liberal. I''m not one to drink the bitter tears of my
opponents, but admit I'm enjoying the moment and wallowing in the joy
exploding all over my internets. SCOTUS delivered two big victories for gay
rights this morning.
The two cases, both decided on 5-4 votes, concerned the constitutionality
of a key part of a federal law, the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),
that denied benefits to same-sex married couples, and a voter-approved
California state law enacted in 2008, called Proposition 8, that banned gay
marriage.

Back to the "Live" Filibuster
Everyone loves a live, or talking, filibuster. They make for terrific
drama! No question about it -- hey, say what you will about Frank Capra,
but he certainly knew from compelling drama. So when there is one -- such
as yesterday's marathon filibuster of abortion legislation by Texas State
Senator Wendy Davis -- everyone wants more, and gets all upset that in the
US Senate most filibusters are "silent" and not dramatic at all.
First, a bit of fun. Me, responding to why Democrats didn't demand a
talking filibuster against the ACA in 2009:

Politics is carefully balanced between two seemingly opposite processes. On
the one hand we have a generation of Thatcher and now Major’s Children, now
young adults, who have imbibed a lifetime of neoliberal propaganda and
turned it into (Gramscian) common sense. On the other hand we have an
ongoing breakdown in the Conservative Party voter base/hegemonic bloc which

I'd hate to make anyone think I'm an optimist. I'm not even sure I care too

pessimism is about -- a cosmic frame of reference that sees no permanence;
that sees everything that is on the way up as inevitably on the way down.
Perhaps not caring gives a clearer vision. If it doesn't matter in the end

This week, I want to focus on another social media platform, one that has
potential to be your greatest ally, if you use it correctly. I'm talking

Twitter is huge. It's popular. And yet, it can be very overwhelming. I know
I was overwhelmed by it at first. After all, it has its own language of
sorts (all the @ and # signs every other word). Everything has to fit into
essentially one sentence, and a seemingly cryptic one at that. And yet,
Twitter keeps on growing. And there's a reason for that.

Take a look at the first Palestine National Charter of 1964, this
