10:09pm MDSTDrug Price Control 34: No Single National Price, And a Wailing Cat
Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 50 seconds ago
Among the reasons often cited why some groups proposed government price
control of certain commodities is that the local price of the same product
by the same manufacturer is higher compared to other countries in the
developing world. The assumption is that since it is (a) same product (b)
made by the same manufacturer, then the price should be generally the same.
This assumption is intrinsically wrong because it assumes that there is
only one price in one country or city for each product that satisfies (a)
and (b) conditions above. For instance, a can of coca cola 350 ml is the

As I was saying on the phone last night…
The right to privacy rests largely on a presumption of innocence [says
Wendy McElroy]. It assumes that — in the absence of evidence of wrongdoing
— an individual has a right to shut his front door and tell other people
(including government) to mind their own business.
Today, this assumption has been twisted inside out so that a desire for
privacy means you have something to hide. You are expected to prove your
innocence by revealing every financial transaction, by filling in pages of
government paperwork, by allowing state agents to frisk ... more »

Can Florida Democrats Blow The 2014 Gubernatorial Race?
DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 3 hours ago
Last week, Florida politics expert Steve Schale had a cautiously optimistic
analysis of how his state's electorate has changed since 2006 and what it
portends for the future. Since the 2006 election, the total number of
active registered voters in Florida has grown from 10,433.849 to 11,934,446
voters and of those million and a half new voters, 61% are either black or
Hispanic. Here's the kicker: only 6% of them registered as Republicans. On
top of that, over 50% of Hispanic voter registration growth has accrued to
the Democrats, while the Republicans account for only 12%. Schale e... more »

7 Reasons War with Syria is a Really Bad Idea

"Missing Peace"
*Anthony Freda Art* *Activist Post*
The Obama Doctrine of preemptive "humanitarian" war is once again moving
into high gear, this time in Syria.
Without providing any concrete evidence, U.S. officials have concluded that
Syria has used chemical weapons against rebels. Apparently, this is now the
standard (or 'Red Line') for which the U.S. goes to war.
The U.S. government wouldn't dare lie to the world about such things again,
would they? Well, they got away with it in Iraq, and they destroyed Libya
without any valid reason provided.

Fish Farming Tops Beef Production

Essentially fish farming has surpassed the wild catch and the meat output
of the beef industry. Most of this has gone by unnoticed by most of us and

time, and this is not too far away, fish farming will generally eliminate

And whither then? I cannot say.
The Road goes ever on and on,
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
Let others follow it who can!
Let them a journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet."

I thought Charli’s return meant I was off this beat, but what the hey. What
if Shakespeare wrote Star Wars? Check it out here. Come to think of it, the
whole brother and sister not knowing each other and almost falling in love
seems like a Shakespeare comedy, does it not? Oh really? Never mind.

“Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 is truly a majestic island universe some
200,000 light-years across. Located a mere 60 million light-years away
toward the chemical constellation Fornax, NGC 1365 is a dominant member of
the well-studied Fornax galaxy cluster. This sharp color image shows
intense star forming regions at the ends of the bar and along the spiral
arms, and details of dust lanes cutting across the galaxy's bright core. At
the core lies a supermassive black hole.

“Maybe we accept the dream has become a nightmare. We tell ourselves that
reality is better. We convince ourselves it’s better that we never dream at
all. But, the strongest of us, the most determined of us, holds on to the
dream or we find ourselves faced with a fresh dream we never considered. We
wake to find ourselves, against all odds, feeling hopeful. And, if we’re
lucky, we realize in the face of everything, in the face of life the true
dream is being able to dream at all.”

THE MILITARIZATION OF BASEBALL
Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 2 days ago
I love baseball and the Baltimore Orioles are my favorite team. Because I
grew up in a military family we moved every 2-3 years. I lived all over
the US and in England and Germany (twice). I never really had a home town
to speak of. The Orioles were my roots.
It's become harder and harder for me to remain a fan but I keep trying in
spite of the big $$$ takeover of sports. But the worst part for me is the
increasing militarization of baseball. Just tonight, after being at a
meeting in Portland to hear a peace movement speaker, I came home to check
to see how my O's did. They... more »

It's one of those things. You hear about it every day but never stop to *
really*think about it.
This began as an email discussion with my friend, Ned, yesterday. All of us
in Turdville are aware that the Shanghai Gold Exchange has physically
delivered something like 1200 metric tonnes of gold, year to date. That's a
staggering number and it far exceeds the amount delivered through London
and dwarfs the level delivered through the Comex. Prior to yesterday,... more »
Musical Interlude: John Denver, “The Eagle and the Hawk”

“I am the eagle, I live in high country,
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky.
I am the hawk and there's blood on my feathers,
But time is still turning, they soon will be dry.
And all those who see me, and all who believe in me
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly...
Come dance with the west wind, and touch on the mountain tops
Sail o'er the canyons and up to the stars.
And reach for the heavens, and hope for the future,
And all that we can be, and not what we are...”

Who was who in the Iranian presidential election? (UPDATE: And the winner is . . .)

close to Khamenei," the Supreme Leader's guy in today's Iranian
presidential election? Nobody seems to know.*

[Hassan] Rowhani have got to be the two least attractive candidates.
Neither has the profile of an ideological true believer or an
unquestioningly faithful lieutenant. Khamenei has had enough of Presidents
who challenge him from bases of power of their own. But to sideline these

"The pathetic truth is that most people fear genuine independence more
than they fear death itself. So desperate are they for "acceptance" and so
fearful of being thought "peculiar," they will deny the evidence of their
own eyes and mindlessly repeat the lies and ignorance of others. When it
comes to a subject like economics or foreign policy, they think: "Oh,
that's so hard! I can't understand that. I'll just listen to what the
'experts' say. They know best."

just this faith of mine that they laugh at. But how can I help believing

"You were born with potential.
You were born with goodness and trust.
You were born with ideals and dreams.
You were born with greatness.
You were born with wings.
You are not meant for crawling, so don't.
You have wings,
Learn to use them, and fly.
What in your life is calling you,
When all the noise is silenced,
The meetings adjourned...
The lists laid aside,
And the Wild Iris blooms
By itself in the dark forest...
What still pulls on your soul?"

ARMING THE SYRIAN REBELS: A NEW CHAPTER IN THE WEST’S MIDDLE-EAST FOREIGN POLICY
Damian Lataan at Telling the History of the Twenty-First Century as it Really Is - 2 days ago
If it demonstrates nothing else, America’s decision to support the rebels
against Syrian President Bashir al-Assad indicates that the US has arrived
at a long term endgame plan for the future of both Syria and the region –
and it won’t be just the removal of al-Assad from office.
The opposition in Syria is now dominated by pan-Islamic Sunni jihadists. In
the event of al-Assad’s downfall the last thing the Israelis and the US
want is a new Syrian government made up of Islamists who despise Israel
more than they do the pro-Assad Shia foe they’re fighting now. Indeed, if

*"You Reading This, Be Ready"*
"Starting here, what do you want to remember?
How sunlight creeps along a shining floor?
What scent of old wood hovers, what softened
sound from outside fills the air?
Will you ever bring a better gift for the world
than the breathing respect that you carry
wherever you go right now? Are you waiting
for time to show you some better thoughts?
When you turn around, starting here, lift this
new glimpse that you found; carry into evening
all that you want from this day. This interval you spent
reading or hearing this, keep it for life.
