Last night's *Down The Line* (BBC Radio 4, 7.15) was an absolute treat. The subject of the phone-in, hosted as ever by the award-winning Gary Bellamy, was the UK's Olympics legacy. Here's a sample of the discussion: *Lord Declan*: My main point is that since the Olympics the whole country has been enthused. Now there are young lads in the east end of London and the inner city parts of Birmingham, stout Geordie chaps, and they want to be out rowing and sailing and doing equestrianism and all that. And it's up to me to enable them to do that, to really bring dressage into the inner c... more »

The Multiple Prongs of Agenda 21

noreply@blogger.com (Mark Daniels) at Global Political Awakening - 7 minutes ago
Dees Illustration Seen Agenda 21 is an action plan or blueprint of a desired future. This desired future is shrouded in feel good environmental protective development and innovation or otherwise referred to as green, green movement, and/or environmentalism. Sadly, Agenda 21 is an utter ruse for painting a largely Dystopian future as Utopian to many activists and activist groups. There is a larger picture to Agenda 21 that many people either refuse to acknowledge or determined to dismiss the doubt requiring re-evaluation. Agenda 21 is one pincer of several. Most people don’t realiz... more »

Elsewhere: ACA/Obamacare, Boehner, more

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 10 minutes ago
Two new columns and a blog post I liked, plus some other stuff: My Salon column this week was another argument that John Boehner is doing a pretty good job, considering the circumstances. At TAP, I predict the new rallying cry: "keep your Obamacare away from my Affordable Care Act!" -- or, in other words, Obamacare stays unpopular even if the ACA is successful and therefore untouchable. And I didn't go full-blown cranky, but I got annoyed at something on Friday and wrote about how no one is ever "really running" Washington. Others at the Post last week: What the Farm Bill says abou... more »

Canadian Infrastructure Not Ready for Climate Change. Calgary Gets Two Once-a-Century Floods in 8 Years.

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 13 minutes ago
Decades of neglect have left Canadian infrastructure vulnerable to severe weather events of the sort now ravaging southern Alberta. The World Council on Disaster Management kicked off its annual conference this morning in Toronto, itself the scene or recent heavy flooding. *“How prepared are we? One way of answering that is that we will never be as prepared as we could be,” said Adrian Gordon, former President & CEO of the Canadian Centre for Emergency Preparedness.* *“We’re simply that much closer to the next big disaster. Flying Wallendas

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 17 minutes ago
I was offline for about 36 hours and returned to discover Nik Wallenda was doing a tightrope walk across the Grand Canyon. I was surprised to find a fair amount of mockery about it on the internets. Not to mention, nitpicking over the actual location of the walk. Does it really matter if Wallenda crossed above the Grand Canyon on Navajo land? I remember when it was a BFD for a high wire walker to perform in the Big Top w/o a safety net. But nobody goes to the circus anymore. And an ever more jaded public demands greater thrills from its professional daredevils. Apparently risking c... more »

Edward Snowden Charged Under the Espionage Act

It wrongfully accused him of violating 1917 Espionage Act provisions. It was enacted during WWI. It's long ago outdated. It has no current relevance. It belongs in history's dustbin. It was about interfering with military operations, supporting enemies, promoting insubordination in the ranks, or challenging military recruitment. At stake are fundamental First Amendment rights. Monsanto's Game Over: Extreme Toxicity of Roundup Destroys Justification for GM Agriculture

noreply@blogger.com (Mark Daniels) at Global Political Awakening - 48 minutes ago
image source Sayer Ji If Monsanto's Roundup herbicide were actually 'safer than table salt' as they once advertised, the consumption of GM food wouldn't be nearly as controversial. The truth, however, is that virtually all GM food today contains residues of this toxic chemical, which disproves that GM and non-GM foods are "substantially equivalent," which is the primary doctrinal justification behind why GM foods are not properly safety tested and millions in this country eating them are living and breathing guinea pigs. New Canadian Law States Masked Protesters Could Face 10 Years in Jail

noreply@blogger.com (Mark Daniels) at Global Political Awakening - 54 minutes ago
Joe Martino The rise of the people is an undeniable happening across the globe as hundreds of millions have taken to the streets over the past few years to stand up for what they are not happy with throughout the world. But a new Canadian law (Bill C-309) now forbids people from wearing any mask or face-covering during a riot or so-called “unlawful assembly.” While it is difficult to determine how the law defines this type of protest exactly, it is clear on ... more »

Senator Colin Kenny has written an important op-ed in this morning's *Toronto Star*. The central thrust of the piece is that the Harper government's approach to foreign aid is sheer folly. Kenny writes: That Harper would pull CIDA out of some of the poorest countries in the world — like Malawi and Niger — and shift its focus to countries Canada wants to increase trade was reprehensible for a government committed to stand on firm moral principles in its international dealings. Focus on Bank Liabilities, Not Bank Assets

John Cochrane has a great column in today's *Wall Street Journal* on how to create a better banking system. He says that we should focus on the nature of bank liabilities (demand deposits, in particular) rather than on the riskiness of bank assets. Back in 1993, in my discussant's comments on an Akerlof-Romer article on the savings and loan crisis, I made a similar argument. Here is an excerpt of what I then wrote: Traditional banks are peculiar institutions. Traditional banks have depositors who want short-term, liquid, riskless assets. "How Could You? A Dog's Story"

* * *"How Could You? A Dog's Story"* by Jim Willis "When I was a puppy I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" - but then you'd relent and roll me over for a bellyrub. My housetraining took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. While some kingdoms were defeated militarily and occupied, others remained nominally independent as allies of the Roman empire. One such people was the Iceni in what is now Norfolk. Their king, Prasutagus, secured his independence by leaving his lands jointly to his daughters and to the Roman emperor, Nero, in his will. The values of compliance are taught to 20th and 21st Century populations through electronic stimulation, opiating foods, misinformation and the illusion of choice. I Got A Call From A New Dem Friday

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Not the New Dem who called me... but it could have been A congressman who I used to talk to a few years ago-- before he was a congressman-- called me Friday. He said he felt badly because of the stuff I've been writing about him. I haven't really been writing about him much-- just reporting (usually without comment and never with any pejorative language) his ghastly votes. He said he felt bad because he likes me. I told him I felt bad because I like him. I haven't even asked the *DWT* art director to make a clown face for him. His excuses for voting badly were so sad... just like his... more »

Crazy Nuclear Safety

Charles Barton at The Nuclear Green Revolution - 1 day ago
Critics of nuclear power often denounce it as unsafe, yet they very seldom focus on answers to the question: "What can be done to make nuclear power safer." As it turns out, it is possible to make nuclear power so safe that there would never be a human casualty from a nuclear accident during the entire period of human life on earth. Even at this level of safety, it might be possible to make nuclear power even safer. This might sound crazy, but there may be plausible reasons for adopting such safety standards. During the months leading up to my heart attacks in 2011, I focused a... more »

Will summer camp make my kids rich?

Greg Mankiw at Greg Mankiw's Blog - 1 day ago
Paul Krugman, commenting on my recent article, thinks it is noteworthy that the rich have increased their spending on child enrichment programs. To me, that is not a surprise. The incomes of the rich have risen, and this category of spending, like many others, has a positive income elasticity. I am a parent of three, and as far as I know, Paul does not have any children. So I have probably spent a lot more on this category than he has. And I can report that much of it is consumption, not investment. A book I probably should have cited in my article is Judith Harris's The Nurture... more »

Edward Snowden departs Hong Kong for Moscow - whether he stays in Moscow , transits from there to Iceland / Cuba or any other country , the point has been made. And to further rub salt into this open wound , Hong Kong now has officially demanded clarification of US hacking of computers in Hong Kong !

http://rt.com/news/snowden-fly-moscow-aeroflot-125/ ( Already in Moscow - and Moscow unaware of his travel plans ? ) Hong Kong authorities have said NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is on his way to the Russian capital in a bid to elude the US extradition order against him. However, RT sources report that the former CIA contractor is already in Moscow. The US has filed an extradition order against Snowden for espionage, theft and conversion of government property. A spokesperson from the Hong Kong government confirmed that Edward Snowden had *"legally and voluntarily"* left the cou... more »

Part 1... "The Eunuchs have cancelled" "What's sounds like Greek but isn't Greek" Part2... "Well it's quite cunning....." Possibly the worst fight scene ever... Part 3... "Stupid bastard" "I wouldn't pass water over Scotland" A rather good sword fight, Errol Flynn had nothing on Rowan Atkinson. Overall I think Tony Robinson was a fine addition and Brian Blessed made for a noisier King. The whole piece was pretty much carried forward into series 1 which had much darker humour than the later series which had Ben Elton added to the writing team. The main change between thi... more »

I'm Impressed...Just Impressed... Are all American and UK submarines fitted this way? Read below 2001 article.... *By Neil King Jr.* *Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal* WASHINGTON -- For decades, the National Security Agency did most of its spying by plucking information out of thin air. The Honduras' crime problem and 'advisories'

paul at Paying attention - 1 day ago
Another grisly warning from the U.S. government this week about travel to Honduras, and an off-key response from the Honduran government. The State Department advisory cautioned in the first sentence that “crime and violence levels remain critically high.” Things mostly went downhill from there. La Gringa, an ex-pat blogger living in La Ceiba, did a useful comparison of this advisory with the last warning from Nov. 21. Generally, the new version paints a picture of greater danger. For instance, both documents say U.S. citizens do not appear to be targeted. But the new advisory adds “C... more »
