A story of retaliation, of struggle, and of joy in solidarity
Barbara Madeloni at @ THE CHALK FACE knows SCHOOLS MATTER - 1 day ago
In the year since I received my letter of non-renewal for supporting
students who stood up to Pearson-Stanford’s field test of a national
assessment for student teaching, I found myself in many conversations about
fear. Teacher educators, teachers, students, even parents worry about the
power held over them and the repercussions if they speak out. […]
Tell Sarah
Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
According to former BBC reporter Andrew Gilligan (of "dodgy dossier" fame), writing
in the Telegraph, the BBC is guilty of swallowing and regurgitating a false
narrative about a "wave" attacks on Muslims in the wake of the murder of
Drummer Lee Rigby by two Islamist killers.
Some of you may have heard Sarah Montague's interview on Today with Fiyaz
Mughal of the Tell Mama project, which - as the *Today *website puts it -
" records Islamophobic crimes and incidents". Mr Mughal told of the
"endemic fear" of Muslims as a result of the "backlash". The BBC's
favourite "expert on far ri... more »
America, land of the free and home of the brave ...unless you are a strait-A high school student who decided to try an experiment on school property that popped a plastic bottel a little louder than anticipated ...leading "zero tolerance" school officials to have her arrested for commiting a felony! This isn't the country I grew up in. "...those entrusted with your care won't always care for you, those entrusted with your protection won't always protect you, and those entrusted with guarding your rights won't always guard you."

We Need to Address the Profound Stupidity That Afflicts America
*Crackdown on Florida high school science student is prime example of
American idiocy.*
*May 31, 2013* | It's not as though a bunch of people in central Florida
have been consciously conspiring about the best way to trash a 16-year-old
girl's life, but the effect of their collective personal and institutional
stupidity may well produce the same effect. At first there was no sign that
any of them much cared, but now there's a ray of hope fo... more »
Why Darrell Issa Should Be A DCCC Top Priority... Instead Of Another Chairman Steve Israel Gives A Free Pass To Reelection
DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Last year, Darrel Issa skated to reelection, winning back his seat (CA-49)
139-127 (59%) to 97,454 (41%). There are parts of two counties in the
district: Orange County, where he won 66% and, San Diego, where he won 56%.
There's more than twice as much San Diego in CA-49 as Orange County. Does
that seem too hopeless to tackle? Let's look a little closer.
In 2008, Obama and McCain basically tied, although Obama officially won the
district by a few votes. Last year Romney did better than McCain, besting
Obama 52-46%. The PVI is R+4. Half a dozen Democrats won in districts that
had ... more »

One of These Things Is NOT Like the Others

Let's get something straight. 'Robocalls' is NOT a generic term for
electioneering or marketing techniques that piss us off.
A robocall is a phone call that uses a computerized system to call
targetted numbers and deliver a recorded message.
It is not unlike a flyer in your mailbox or an ad on your telly.
In Canada, robocalls are legally used for political purposes and are
subject to regulation by the CRTC.
Sometimes, operatives misuse them -- knowingly or not -- and, when the
system works, they get caught and fined by the CRTC.
As was reported last week.
Robocalls are the tie tha... more »

So, would you vote for a party with these policies?
1. Strip from legislation all references to the Treaty of Waitangi and
its recently invented “principles.”
2. Abolish all race based seats and positions in central and local
government.
3. Abolish the Waitangi Tribunal.
4. Ensure that no individual or group has preferment in legislation or
funding on grounds of ethnicity.
5. Ensure that there is no constitutional change without the support of
three quarters of those voting in a referendum.
6. End the official state promotion and ... more »
Why I bang on about 'Dateline' so much
Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
I share the tendency of most politically-minded internet users to gravitate
towards websites that reinforce my own point of view on most issues.
For example, I read the* Daily Telegraph* and *Daily Mail *websites far
more than I read the* Guardian *or *Independent* websites. I read the *Spectator
*and the *Commentator *far more than I read the *New Statesman *or *Liberal
Conspiracy*. It's *Biased BBC* for me rather than *Media Lens*, and *Harry's

I like *Left Foot Forward*.

The Letter the Memphis Commercial Appeal Won’t Print
Jim Horn at @ THE CHALK FACE knows SCHOOLS MATTER - 1 day ago
Hey, I tried. But it seems that Old Money and Gates Money have a
stranglehold on the city’s main newspaper–which makes the Gates-ASD-AEI
silent throttling of public education in Memphis even more ominous. The
AEI connection? Here’s what the head of the State of Tennessee’s
Achievement School District, Chris Barbic (former CEO of Uncommon Schools,

Well after all the ballyhoo about Eric Holder's invite to the major media
chiefs for a sit-down, the initial holdouts are drifting in to meet with
the AG after all. Reuters Chief Operating Officer Stuart Karle, with
Marilyn Thompson met with Holder yesterday once he agreed they could report
the general drift of the meeting.
"Long-term, I think they're looking for changes in how the rules operate
and regard this as an opportunity to make sure that happens," Karle said.
Which I thought was clearly the point of the meetings from the beginning,
but no matter, good to see cooler heads a... more »
