Who Fact-Checks The Fact-Checkers?: PolitiFact and Ted Cruz Both Get the Iran Deal Wrong
Presidential candidate Ted Cruz and the Tampa Bay Times' Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking website PolitiFact were at each others' throats last week over recent comments Cruz has made about the nuclear deal - officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - reached this past July between Iran and six world powers. The main reason for the spat is simple: Ted Cruz lies a

Do American Voters Really Favor Plutocracy Or Oligarchy Over Democracy?
Maybe I'm reading this wrong-- though I don't think so-- or maybe it just hasn't become a motivational priority yet for voters, but it looks like the zeitgeist is indicating that Americans are fed up-- angry even-- that super-rich donors are running American politics. Voters don't seem pleased that the political elite-- of both corrupt Beltway parties-- are taking as much money as they are from the super-wealthy and giving them the unlimited "access" that they demand in return. From a NYTimes/CBS poll in May Reuters ran an innocuous enough piece Sunday-- Democratic donors urge ... more »

President Obama Blames His Critics For The Mess In Syria
Official White House Photo by Pete Souza *Jennifer Rubin, Washington Post*:* Obama claims his critics forced him to make a mess of Syria* The administration let it be known it is scrapping what it never seriously pursued, namely training of anti-regime, nonjihadist rebels. In what surely is the most cringe-worthy excuse offered by a commander-in-chief, President Obama last week complained that his critics — whom he routinely ignored and scorned — forced him to make a mess of Syria. Are Markets Immoral? On Popes, Pencils, and Chicken Sandwiches
*Trade and production are deeply ethical* *Guest post by Don Boudreaux* Are markets moral? This oft-asked question will be asked even oftener when Pope Francis visits the U.S. next week. It’s one thing to conclude that markets are immoral after learning how markets work and what life would be like in their absence. Such a conclusion is intellectually defensible because it would reflect an informed – if, in my view, bizarre – value judgment. But the conclusion that markets are immoral typically reflects – as it surely does in the case of Pope Francis – utter ignorance of the logic... more »

"Life Choices - Facing Difficult Decisions"
"Life Choices - Facing Difficult Decisions" By Jennifer Mclynch "We have all been at a point in our lives where we have to make a difficult decision, and we just don’t know how. We spend countless hours thinking about it, contemplating all of the options, and trying to sort out all of the complex emotions that go along with the decision. We make pro and con lists, go for long walks, or write down our feelings until we come to a place where we can be comfortable with the decision that we have made. The question is, how can you be sure that it is the right decision, and how can you p... more »

"The Power of Doubt" by don Miguel Ruiz "Have you ever asked yourself if something you heard was actually true? Have you ever wondered if someone was lying to you, or worse yet, have you ever wondered, "Am I lying to myself?" Do you believe those voices in your head that are giving you opinions? Do you tend to believe other people's opinions? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will understand when being skeptical is a good thing. Right now, you're delivering a message to yourself and to everyone around you. You're always delivering messages, and you're always receiv... more »

EPA is ruining Volkswagen
The stock price of Volkswagen AG is seeing a decrease by 20% or so today; the DAX index reacts by a drop by 0.6% which is visibly worse than other European stock indices (those went up). This brutal drop occurred after Volkswagen has admitted that it has employed a variety of software tricks – generally referred to as a "defeat device" – to understate its cars' emissions in order to please the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. The tricks have been used for 7 years in the diesel models sold in the U.S. which include Audi A3, VW Jetta, Beetle, Golf and Passat. With all the brouhaha over the clerk who went to jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, plus being in the midst of the Jewish holidays, I thought now would be a good time to talk about religious discrimination and when employers must accommodate religious beliefs. Here's what EEOC says about when an employer does not have to accommodate an employee's religious beliefs: An employer can refuse to provide a reasonable accommodation if it would pose an undue hardship. Undue hardship may be shown if the accommodation would impose “more than de minimis cost” on the o... more »

It's called “Wealth and Power”, and it's by Orville Schell and John Delury. “It's an ill wind that blows no good.” ~ Irish proverb: * is olc an ghaoth nach séideann do dhuine éigin* ...a relic phrase from the Treat Potato Famine - *an Gorta Mór** -* p. 172, *Ireland*’*s Great Hunger: Relief, representation, and remembrance* Volume 2, by David A. Valone This is a time of desperation for so many refugees who have been forced to leave their homes and seek safety in a foreign land. It is another tragic repeat of many such travails in the past that occur when the human population outstrips the ability of their homeland to sustain them, and conflicts result.... more »
Farrar lies to Australians
David Farrar has been lying to Australians, and the fact he needs to lie tells us a lot about what the Key Government is not. Still struggling to understand what New Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull stands for (hint: nothing), the *Australian Financial Review *invited David Farrar to fill them in one of the few clues Turnbull has let slip: that John Key “has been able to achieve very significant economic reforms in New Zealand … by taking on and explaining complex issues and then making the case for them.” As curious as the rest of us were to have these reforms revealed (Michael Re... more »
Libertarians are not right wing
Yes, I know that will come as a shock to many of you to hear that: libertarians are NOT right wing. But nor are they left wing. Confused? No more than anyone would be who tries to explain and understand the whole world through a one-dimensional ahistorical political diagram. Because that spectrum is either broken—or calculated to exclude all other options than the authoritarian extremes: Hat tip here to Daniel Mitchell, who advises, *If you want to figure out where you belong, there is a **short way**, **medium way**, and **long way* * of answering that question. And while I d... more »
More Details Revealed On Why Army Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl Left His Post
*Washington Post:* *Disillusioned and self-deluded, Bowe Bergdahl vanished into a brutal captivity* JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Tex. — Army Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl was fed up. He was five weeks into a deployment in southeastern Afghanistan and frustrated with his mission and his leaders. He and his fellow soldiers weren’t going after the Taliban as aggressively as he wanted, and his sense of disillusion added to the disgust for the Army that he had begun developing while still in basic training. Looking to make a stand, Bergdahl hatched a plan: He would run away from his ...more »

Russian Communications Gear Used By Russian Ground Troops Sighted In Syria
*Oryx Blog*: *Sighting of R-166-0.5 signals vehicle affirms inflow of Russian military into Syria* The past few days have seen a steep increase of evidence revealing the true extent of direct military involvement by the Russian military on the ground in Syria. The sighting of recently delivered Russian UAVs and Russian BTR-82A infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) in addition to sound fragments confirming Russian military personnel directly participated in one of regime's offensives in the Lattakia Governorate all proved Russia was deeper involved in the Syrian Civil War than many pre... more »

Few Options Left For Stopping The Syrian War As Millions Abandon The Country
In September 2013, before IS had begun its death march, about 130,000 people who have since died were still alive. But it’s Assad’s military that has killed the most Syrians. According to reports by the Syrian Network for Human Rights, Assad's soldiers killed about 11,500 people between January and August, while IS killed 1,800. The area around Douma, pictured here, is controlled by rebels and is one of the most embattled areas in the Syrian civil war. *Christoph Reuter, Spiegel Online:* *Abandoning Syria: Few Options Left for Stopping the War* Both men were Syrians -- a taxi driv... more »

Much To The Delight Of New Hampshire Democrats and Progressives, Carol Shea-Porter Is Running For Congress Again
Although Tea Party incumbent Frank Guinta has been exposed for violating campaign finance regulations and lying about $350,000 he illegally took from his parents, causing senior New Hampshire Republicans, including Senator Kelly Ayotte, to demand he resign, it still looks like he'll be the GOP nominee for the notoriously swingy NH-01 congressional seat. (Obama won the district against McCain 53-46% and then beat Romney 50-48%.) Dan Innis, then a first-time candidate and a former dean of the University of New Hampshire Business School, came close to beating Frank Guinta in the 2014... more »
When In a Hole, Stop Digging
Or, when you help run your party's clown car into a ditch, stop gunning the engine and spinning your wheels. Scott Walker is now polling at literally 0%, according to one poll ironically named the CNN/ORC poll. Jeb Bush is polling at 6% nationwide, including California. Despite a trickle of support weaker than Dick Cheney's urine stream from Governors, mayors, members of Congress and an inexplicably sought-after endorsement from Eric Cantor, the first and only minority leader since 1899 to lose a primary, Bush just can't ignite the wet log of his campaign. Is It A Clock?

And yes .... when I first saw Ahmed Mohamed "clock", it reminded me of the circuit boards and cell phones that Iraqi insurgents used in detonating IEDs during the U.S. occupation.
