Medicare report shows Obamacare is bending the cost curve

Kenneth Thomas at Middle Class Political Economist - 13 minutes ago
The 2014 Medicare Trustees Report has just been released, and it shows that the program is on noticeably sounder financial footing than it was just a year ago. One of the biggest signs of this is that the projected depletion date of the Hospital Insurance (Part A) Trust Fund has been pushed back by four years just since last year's report. Indeed, Sarah Kliff points out that Part A actually spent $600 million less in 2013 than in 2012, even though it insured 1.6 million more people. As she emphasizes, the big news in this is that per capita Medicare Part A spending has been falling.... more »

The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has surpassed 1,000 and many thousands more are injured, while hospitals and schools are being shelled. Preface to a study

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 50 minutes ago
One of the frustrating things about answering the question 'Is the BBC biased?' is that, however long you may blog about it, providing anecdotal evidence by the bucketful over many years and finding that people who agree with you agree with you, is that huge numbers of people don't agree with you - or don't even care about the issue. That's why I always hoped (with hope in my heart) that statistical evidence (like counting interruptions) would help win over some of the unconverted - the guiding principle behind my 2009-10 blog. (I think I succeeded there, but the BBC didn't agree.... more »

It’s nice to be home. For the last 10 days I traveled to Boston, MA and Portland Maine with my family. In Boston we took our teenage boys down “Freedom Trail.” We walked among places frequented by those who first institutionalized the grand Enlightenment experiment of modern democracy at the close of the eighteenth century. It is true that only a tiny minority of Americans were counted as citizens and afforded the rights institutionalized in the US Constitution at the time of its signing. Worldwide Water Shortage by 2040?

noreply@blogger.com (Mark Daniels) at Global Political Awakening - 1 hour ago
*New study concludes that water shortages may be a bigger problem than we thought.* Kevin Samson Fresh water supplies are under assault on multiple fronts. We are seeing the continuing fallout from the droughts in the Western U.S. and Brazil - both are incredibly important areas to the global food supply. At the same time, corporate hoarding of fresh water is on the rise. Nestle's former CEO clearly stated that water supplies should be privatized and that the right to fresh, clean water is not an essential human right. The Fisk jumps another shark

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 2 hours ago
Do you know the original of the phrase 'jumping the shark' (when something reaches such a low point that it becomes utterly absurd and passed-its-sell-by-date)? It came from an episode of 'Whacky Days' when The Fisk got off his motorbike, donned jet skies, raised his thumbs, said 'Heyyy!' and, yes, jumped a shark: The Fisk (real name Robert Fiskerelli) has been jumping sharks every since and, as CiF Watch points out, jumped a particularly huge great white over at *The Independent *yesterday in an article called: It's not just radicalised Islamists – what about foreign fighters who... more »

Paul Ryan's voting record in Congress-- going back to 1999 when he was a 20-something with the consciousness, though not the wisdom, of an angry 80 year old-- shows pretty conclusively he has never cared a whit about working class families. Considering we are in the 100 year anniversary of WW1 and knowing how history repeats, because we aren't told any real factual history this editorial reads like a real call to war! A reason the US simply must act. "The Great War" and "The war to end all war" proved to be neither. While several small oil fields have fallen under the control of the Islamic State in northern Iraq the vast majority of the country’s reserves reside in the south and have been unaffected. All this week: The culture of “horrible coverage!”

*MONDAY, JULY 28, 2014* *Also, the culture of silence:* If Hillary Clinton runs for president, she may well get her party’s nomination. If she does, is she “destined to get horrible coverage” from the mainstream press corps? Last Friday, Mark Halperin made that prediction on Morning Joe—and he stressed the word “horrible.” Three days earlier, he had made a similar statement on the same program. For fuller background, see this morning’s post. We’ll look at last Tuesday’s Morning Joe in tomorrow’s principal post. For now, here are some excerpts from Halperin’s statements that day: ... more »

*Lessons from Teach For America* There is widespread agreement among education reformers that public school teachers should be hired based on their subject matter competence rather than their formal credentials; that the best teachers should be assigned to the lowest performing schools; and that teachers should be paid based on performance rather than tenure. Exactly the opposite takes place in most school districts. However, there is a program that does recruit, select, train, pay and evaluate teachers in a manner that most reformers would support. Mass Incarceration: 21 Amazing Facts About America’s Obsession With Prison

We also have a higher percentage of our population locked up than anyone else does by a very large margin. But has all of this imprisonment actually made us safer? Well, the last time I checked, crime was still wildly out of control in America and for the most recent year that we have numbers for violent crime was up 15 percent. The number of people that we have locked up has *quadrupled *since 1980, but this is not solvin... more »

The one with the very worst testing record is the Ground-based Mid-course program. Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 1 day ago
[image: Soryu class SSK]Australia should discuss building its next-generation fleet of submarines overseas, the Department of Defence said on Monday, a shift that could open the door to a partnership deal with Japan that carries political risk at home and abroad. Australia is looking for partners to help it build about a dozen diesel-electric submarines to replace its aging Collins Class fleet and help to extend its maritime surveillance deep into the Indian Ocean. The proposed A$40 billion fleet of submarines is at the core of the nation's maritime defence strategy over the next tw... more »

Car Stuff in Costa Rica

Lori Anne Haskell at Our Paradise--Life in Costa Rica - 1 day ago
We have an SUV in Costa Rica, a Nissan Xterra, that Kurt drove from Michigan to Costa Rica. This post is about the maintenance we have had to do on our car while here and the cost. First, we needed an oil change right after I arrived here since Kurt drove so far to get here. We took it to a place that you drove up to and they lifted the car in the air, with us inside. No wait. The cost was about what it is in the States, but we got higher end oil. Super nice guy who owned the place. Very close to our house in Herradura. Today, we needed to get a flat repaired and changed, and wa... more »

Movie Watch: "Calvary" at MoMI -- first watch the movie, then watch the writer-director and principal actor talk about it

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
*Brendan Gleeson as Father James Lavelle* *by Ken* Here's something to imagine. Imagine that you've just seen a movie that so overwhelmed and shocked you that at the end you hadn't yet had time to piece together how you felt -- a film that is so centrally built around its central character that he's a central piece of the architecture of the film (into which he had substantial input) -- and you knew that when the lights went up, the film's writer-director and principal actor would be coming onstage to talk about it! Regular readers have probably guessed that the setting was the Mu... more »

Peak politician

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
You don’t hear the Greens talking about “peak oil” anymore, and there’s a simple reason for that. The simple reason is that even the Greens now realise “peak oil” is bollocks. Fracking changed all that. So now, they’re against that. So we are still nowhere near peak oil, and given how resource economics work, unlikely ever to approach it. However, we’re a small country, with few naturally occurring sources of hot air and blowhard, and it looks like we might have now approached peak politician. The evidence for this frightful state of affairs grew even greater over the weekend, ... more »

If Gaza Isn’t a Genocide, What Is?: discourse as resistance

Megan MacKenzie at Duck of Minerva - 1 day ago
At the moment many of us are watching the news with bated breath. New sites, facebook and twitter feeds are filling with images of civilian deaths and the leveling of Gaza. There is growing sentiment that the ‘targeted’ operations in Gaza by the IDF have been willfully indiscriminate- with example upon example of civilian safe Continue reading

The Isreali Genocide Of Gaza Continues: WHY Do Israelis Continue To Kill Palestinians?

Northerntruthseeker at Northerntruthseeker - 1 day ago
The Israeli onslaught and massacre in the Gaza Strip against innocent people continues... The laughable ceasefire is now over and Israel is again killing Palestinians in what is in reality the world's largest concentration camp with impunity. It is so disgusting that our own governments continue to turn their backs on this slaughter and cold blooded genocide of innocent people. There has always been one very nagging question that everyone should be asking, and it is : WHY in the HELL do the Israelis continue to kill Palestinians?. I have long been troubled by this sickness and h... more »

Can Anyone Trust Pete Aguilar?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Substance abuser and New Dem Petey-Pie lets his hair down I don't think even someone as astoundingly incompetent as Steve Israel could lose CA-31-- the Inland Empire congressional district-- for the Democrats again this year, despite having maneuvered to get an ethics-free, corrupt ex-lobbyist, Pete Aguilar, the nomination. After all, the district has a PVI of D+5, Obama won it both times with 57% and the Republican incumbent Israel allowed to slip in in 2012, Gary Miller, is retiring. Almost nothing short of a coke bust-- always possible considering the photo above-- or a rape will... more »
