What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 12 minutes ago
A few obvious ones, but I'll go with the Iran story. We don't have the outcome yet, but surely it matters either way. "Doesn't matter" is too strong, but VA-AG is certainly a combination of elements that give something far more attention than it deserves. I think it was Dave Hopkins who made the more general point on Tuesday that we tend to pay disproportionate attention to these off-year elections, and he's of course exactly right. Add to that an exciting, close election, and there you go. What do you have? What do you think mattered this week?

Miscellany for another November weekend

Although the BBC’s commemoration of the anniversary of Kristallnacht that Craig mentioned last week in his R4 Sunday review was all fine and good, as Craig noted, its attitude to present day antisemitism is not so sensitive. I think they tend to do something quite unhelpful when they do ‘dead and/or humiliated Jews’. It’s not just that the Holocaust can easily be trivialised -- especially when so many people get away with equating Israel’s current treatment of the Palestinians with the Nazis' treatment of the Jews; nor is it that there is a distinct likelihood of stirring up a back... more »

ObamaCare updates November 6 , 2013 - In the short term , one basic question is whether HHS and the Tech surge can get the healthcare.gov website functioning by the end of November , so that total chaos doesn't kick in when the December 15 , 2013 enrollment deadline for Jan 1 , 2014 coverage is hit..... A second key question is who is enrolling and who isn't enrolling ? For ObamaCare to work as centrally planned , you need young customers aka suckers to sign up - and so far , that hasn't happened ..... Meanwhile whether it Big Unions seeking work arounds or politicians and Regulators ( Federal and State ) gently forcing insurers to " reconsider " cancellations , our Orwellian " Affordable Healthcare Act " zombie continue to lurch and twitch around.....

6 Tips for Pain Relief Without Using Medication

When I was in a bad car accident almost two years ago, I walked away, but I walked away with chronic pain that would plague me for a long time after. The pain for me manifested itself in my neck and through migraines. It was honestly excruciating and the only thing the doctors had to offer me were heavy pain killers. Nuke the filibuster already

I've long resisted the calls to kill the filibuster but I no longer have any doubt if the Republicans ever manage to bamboozle the electorate into giving them back a majority in the Senate, the very first thing they'll do is abolish it. So if Democrats could nuke the filibuster please. It's not that I don't appreciate this sort of chatter: From young newbies to the old guards, Democratic senators are clamoring for filibuster reform, and insist that a mass Republican blockade of three judges to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals may be the final straw before going nuclear. "It woul... more »

The Fetishization of Voting

hygiecrat at hygiecracy - 18 hours ago
Walking past a polling site election night, I spotted one of my neighbors standing by the entrance. Dressed in a traditional outfit, he was easily recognizable as a member of a particularly conservative religious sect. Most noticeable, though, was the sign he held admonishing people not to vote. As far as I could tell, the gist of his argument was that the laws, because of their secular nature, are immoral; and since they are immoral, one should abstain from voting. It constituted a breach of the moral law to participate in an immoral system. Needless to say, it struck me as partic... more »

Gotta go with one for Jonathan Chait, who spots a Republican Member of the House claiming that "Congress should do everything in its power to tackle deficits" and then a few sentences later saying that "he rejects any talk of offsetting the cuts with new tax revenue." We did quite a few posts about Attkisson’s work last year. Logan seems to be her successor. Drum is discussing a thoroughly broken post-journalistic culture. That culture is almost ubiquitous now. Does VA Gov Explain the 1992 Perot Vote?

One more time into the question about the VA-Gov polls and the election results. I came up with a possible (and speculative) explanation based on the condition of two candidates who were not especially popular among their own parties, along with a sufficiently well-publicized third candidate. Perhaps Democrats trusted the polls, believing that the seven-point lead Terry McAuliffe held was real, and therefore believed it was safe to vote for the Libertarian; meanwhile, Republicans didn't trust the polls, believed it was close, and thus switched at the last minute back to the Republic... more »
