Suddenly, it's 1963 again
Bit late to this but can't stop thinking about it. Of all the iconic images
of the dreadful day of Jack Kennedy's assassination, this is one that burns
the most vividly in my memory. I saw this unfold live on the television as
an 11 year old who loved my President and the First Family and was
struggling to make sense of this shocking event.

I can't ignore it any longer. Winter is coming and with the changing

What Mattered This Week?
Not the only thing that mattered, but I'll go with the obvious one: the
Senate going nuclear is a very big deal.
What didn't matter? I'll stick with filibusters, and agree with Adam Ramey
that if the legislative filibuster goes, it's not going to matter much...as
long as there's divided government. Although even then, "less than you
think" could still be a big deal, so I suppose this isn't a very good
"didn't matter." Sorry; I've been so focused on the nuclear business that I
hardly know what else happened this week, and all the things I can think of
actually did matter.
But maybe ... more »
Wintering in
Baby, it's cold outside. 19F yesterday morning, 22 this morning.
The vines from missed potatoes that sprouted this fall have flopped over
and are turning to slime. The calendulas finally bit the dust. Squirrels,
who have madly squirreled away what looked like record numbers of acorns
this year (it's what is called a "mast" year) have gone suddenly quiet. The
chard is holding up so far, but is the likeliest of the greens to give up
of what we have out there. Kale, collards, cabbages, beets, mangels,
radish, turnips, Brussels sprouts and even onions are looking good. I

This week we finished Ken Burns' excellent documentary "Prohibition," and I

that much of this film will be eye-opening.
And, if you aren't a regular viewer of Ken Burns' documentaries, this

CREATING THE CONVERSION PROCESS
Six folks turned up at various times yesterday during our 90 minute vigil
at Bath Iron Works. We were there when the afternoon shift knocked off and
the evening shift began so we saw lots of workers drive by.
Our message was primarily about building something different at the
shipyard. BIW has been there more than 100 years and the city's whole
identity is wrapped up in shipbuilding so its a hard sell. But what we
have heard from conversations with workers over the years is that as long
as they have a job they wouldn't mind building rail systems or wind

Saving mankind from disease? Probably not – but maybe for some. I’s more
likely the inspiration comes from a steady stream of royalty money and no

but,… who cares what they do? Unlike the DCCC, the worse the NRCC are, the
better for normal Americans. Yesterday, though, they announced there 36 top
districts for 2014 challengers, the "The On The Radar" list. The crème de
la crème of this dreck will graduate eventually too the Young Guns list.

Lee Harvey Oswald was your typical America-hating communist from Louisiana,
and like every Russkie-loving pinko from the South he grew up watching
American spy dramas, volunteered for a Civilian Air Patrol run by a CIA
contract agent and joined the US Marines. Nicknamed Oswaldski for his
tendency to speak Russian and spout pro-Soviet propaganda, he was given
special training and assigned to one of the most sensitive facilities in
the world running the radar for the U2s spying... more »
Even the wonks don’t want to be bothered!
*FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013*
*We’d love to hear Wonkblog roar:* For years, we have been chronicling the
liberal world’s apparent disinterest in public school issues.
Put that another way—the liberal world’s apparent detachment from the
interests of black kids. Hispanic kids too!
Because no one cares about public school issues, the nation’s elites
determine the way such issues get reported. For example, a set of familiar
standard scripts determines the way reading and math scores get reported.
All over the mainstream press corps, reporters stress the achievement *gaps*and disappear th... more »

The Disconnect Between the “College Push” and Projected Louisiana Career Reality
John White insists that Louisiana needs “the higher academic expectations”
that supposedly come with the untested Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
He insists that CCSS will “prepare students for the rigor of education
after high school” and cites the lametable statistic that “fewer that 30
percent of Louisianans have a two- or four-year degree.” There […]

Stephen Harper ... You are a gutless, sleazy liar. Resign!
*"Prime Minister Stephen Harper has fought for months to prevent the Senate
spending scandal from tarnishing him personally. He no longer can.*
*RCMP Cpl. Greg Horton’s 81-page narrative of the events surrounding Nigel
Wright’s $90,000 payment to Duffy last March immediately enters the
pantheon of transformative Canadian political writing. It reveals Harper’s
command structure, at the level of his closest and most loyal confidants,
to be a nest of corruption, intrigue and shameless deceit. Its contents
raise serious questions about the prime minister’s own role, and, frankly,

Extension of time to appeal under the Provincial Offences Act
*R. v. A.E.,* 2013 ONCA 71:
[19] Numerous authorities set out the appropriate factors that a
court should consider in determining whether to extend the time in which to
appeal under s. 85 of the *Provincial Offences Act*. Among the appropriate
factors, it is usually significant whether:
· the applicant has demonstrated a *bona fide* intention to appeal
within the prescribed appeal period;
· the applicant has accounted for or explained the delay in
initiating the appeal; and
· the proposed appeal has merit.
And in some circumstances it will be signi... more »
Post-Nuclear Etc.
Just a few notes to add to what I said elsewhere, including here for what
the GOP was up to and here for something about power and control in the
Senate.
* I think the certainty among many liberals that Republicans would rapidly
go nuclear as soon as they had unified control of the Senate and the White
House is at best unproven. After all, they didn't do it when they had the
opportunity during the George W. Bush years. If Democrats ratcheted down to
Bush-level selective filibusters...maybe yes, maybe no. It may be true that
the next GOP Senate would be more radical-influenced than t... more »
Disaster Capitalism, Dugger, Indiana, and the Fall of Community Schools
By Doug Martin
As Naomi Klein shows in her frightening book *Shock Doctrine: The Rise of
Disaster Capitalism*, for decades the big plan of America’s millionaires
and billionaires and the government officials they buy with campaign money
has been to slash taxes (“austerity" is their pretty name for it) so that
funding is drained from public services across the board. Not only does
this save the oligarchs money they don't hide overseas, it also creates a
public crisis where private companies can sneak in, take control of public
services, fire workers, and make a healthy profit.

JFK'S VISION FOR PEACE
By Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Rolling Stone
On November 22nd, 1963, my uncle, president John F. Kennedy, went to Dallas
intending to condemn as "nonsense" the right-wing notion that "peace is a
sign of weakness." He meant to argue that the best way to demonstrate
American strength was not by using destructive weapons and threats but by
being a nation that "practices what it preaches about equal rights and
social justice," striving toward peace instead of "aggressive ambitions."
Despite the Cold War rhetoric of his campaign, JFK's greatest ambition as
president was to break the militari... more »

The Predictable Failure of School Improvement Grants
In the second annual data dump on the eve of the anniversary of the
assasination of President Kennedy, the Duncan administration has again
announced the disappointing results of its School Improvement Grant
(SIG.)Once again, the SIG's failure is being released in the "take out
the trash"

In retrospect, I was naïve about the SIG and its roots. My experiences
teaching in the inner city, and in participating in whole school and
whole
system reform were crystalized by Mass Insight's "The Turnaround
Challenge." In 2007, I saw it as one of the most profound anal... more »
Graphs of the Day: Major US Hurricane Drought Continues
Data here.
The US good luck with respect to hurricane landfalls -- yes, good luck --
continues. The graph below shows total US hurricane landfalls 1900 through
2013.
The five-year period ending 2013 has seen 2 hurricane landfalls. That is a
record low since 1900. Two other five-year periods have seen 3 landfalls
(years ending in 1984 and 1994). Prior to 1970 the fewest landfalls over a
five-year period was 6. From 1940 to 1957, every 5-year period had more
than 10 hurricane landfalls (1904-1920 was almost as active).
The red line in the graph above shows a decrease in the number ... more »
GOP melts down under nuclear option
I'm seeing speculation that the GOPers forced Harry Reid's hand as part of
some eleventy dimensional liar's poker move. Maybe it's true that McConnell
thinks Harry changing the rules slightly to get governance moving again is
going to give him some kind of great cover if he ever gets the Senate gavel
back and proceeds to immediately annihilate the filibuster altogether. Of
course that assumes McConnell will survive to see that day. Looking at his
current re-election chances, that's not necessarily a sure bet.
Whatever sort of devious GOP plot this *might* be, for the moment their

Israel’s Spoilsports
Christiane Amanpour likes to call Israeli politician Naftali Bennett “Mr.
No” because he’s against making a bad deal with Iran. He makes the case
for Israel on CNN to (somewhat unnecessary) theatrical effect with the aid
of an ancient artefact, which he took out of the country illegally.
"This coin, which says "Freedom of Zion" in Hebrew, was used by Jews 2,000
years ago in the state of Israel, in what you call occupied. One cannot
occupy his own home."
says he.
Mr Bennet is by no means the only Israeli who the BBC sees as a spoilsport
for not wanting to hug an Ayatollah.

What Happens To Our Body After Drinking Coca-Cola?
[image: Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...]
Have you ever wondered what exactly Coca Cola is?
After 10 minutes: The sugar contained in a glass of Cola can cause a
devastating “strike” on the body. The cause being the phosphoric acid which
inhibits the action of sugar.
After 20 minutes: A leap in insulin levels in bloodstream occurs.
After 40 minutes: Ingestion of caffeine is finally completed. The eye’s
pupils are expanding. Blood pressure rises because the liver disposes more
sugar into the bloodstream. The adenosine receptors become blocked thereby
preventing drows... more »
