Hey Twitter, where's my $595?
Twitter's floatation has provided a handy basis for measuring the value
that each Twitter user has contributed to that company's valuation. Time
has produced a simple calculator that tells you how much Twitter 'owes' you
based on the value you created for it.
So where's my $595?
TWA Terminal, by Eero Saarinen, gets a makeover

When it was built, Eero Saarinen’s 1962 TWA Terminal at New York’s JFK
Airport was a dramatic celebration of the New Age of Modern Flight—which in
1962 virtually meant the modern age.
Having just been renovated for the new New Age of Mass Modern Flight, one
lucky blogger got a chance to look around. As they say, “This was the
cathedral to aviation, if there ever was one, and you [still] feel through
the design the pride and optimism [of] the aviation industry.”

Typhoon Haiyan: similar unspectacular cyclones arrive every 2-3 years
Today in the morning, I was stunned by the dishonesty of the professional
climate alarmists again. Their moral defects are just shocking. It seems
completely obvious to me that they must know that they are lying 24 hours a
day.
This controversy is about the claim that the typhoon Haiyan was the
strongest tropical cyclone that ever made a landfall, and so on. You can
see this preposterous misinformation almost everywhere. For example, start
with the first sentence of the Wikipedia article on Typhoon Haiyan.
All the mistakes are completely obvious and demonstrable, as I will argue

Every morning, at first light, a group of snipers would be tasked with
infiltrating behind the Turkish lines, to take out the milk-bottle sized

Keynes’s Ghost Continues To Haunt Economics
*Guest post by William Anderson** *
According to Keynesian economics, recession is not supposed to accompany
inflation. So when the U.S. economy dipped into an inflationary recession
in 1969, Murray Rothbard noted (in his introduction to the Second Edition
of *America’s Great Depression*) that while the Keynesian paradigm could *
not* explain that phenomenon, Austrian economics *could*.
If Rothbard was correct — and he was — then one might think Keynesian
“economics” should have been deep-sixed permanently, given it could not
explain what everyone saw happening.

Public executions on trumped-up charges are so common in the slave state,
it’s clear North Korea has little interest in concealing what it is.

Will John Boehner Be Able To Defeat Independent-Minded Republican Justin Amash In A Primary?
Last year, when Justin Amash first ran for reelection to Congress in a west
Michigan district centered on Grand Rapids and Battle Creek (MI-03) the
Democratic Party put up a corrupt conservative hack, Steve Pestka, who
could never heart him. It was the first time ever, *DWT* suggested voters

McCain in 2008, but fell short against homeboy Mitt Romney, 177,772 (53%)

PHILIPPINES TYPHOON CAUSED BY US MILITARY WEAPON - REPORT
Dr Michio Kaku, the Weather Channel and CNN have discussed tropical storms
caused by microwave beams (pulses).
Reports have emerged that the typhoon which hit the Philippines was caused
by a microwave beam.
The microwave beam was observed in the West Pacific and it appears to have
created the typhoon.
Reportedly, a U.S. Airforce base is located near the source of the
microwave beam.
The U.S. base is reportedly a satellite communications hub.
After the microwave beam emission, satellite images showed a "heavy

Bonus Sunday Question (on Veterans Day) for Everyone
What do you think the chances are that football becomes a real political
issue at some point in the next five years? Given the problems going on for
both the NFL and college football, could happen at either a national or a
state level (don't forget that in many states the local state college
football coach has the highest state government salary of anyone). Or
maybe, whether football's troubles remain or not, it never becomes a
political issue. What do you think?

Peace and poison
I thought the accent on pacifism sat rather uncomfortably in the
remembrance edition of the Andrew Marr show yesterday. Shirley Williams was
doing the paper review, and to end the programme tenor Ian Bostridge
performed a Benjamin Britten arrangement of O Waly Waly.
Shirley’s mother, Vera Brittain, was a well-known feminist and pacifist
who was friendly with Benjamin Britten, (a pacifist) which provided two
excuses to mention pacifism towards the end of the show, somewhat
reverentially I thought.
I suppose that was in the interest of balance? Pacifism is one of those

Are The Others like us? Or are they different?
*MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2013*
*Salon catches up with Chris Mooney:* It may be the oldest question in the
history of warfare.
Are The Others basically *like* us? Or are “those people” in The Other
Tribe basically different? Perhaps even less than human?
Throughout history, the Great Souls have tended to go with the first
reaction. The war-makers have tended to pimp that second point of view.
It’s tempting to think that The Other Tribe is unlike us, perhaps less than
human. Our brains are wired to think that way. In prehistory, thinking that
way may have been a survival skill.

It's a holiday, so no good stuff today. Just my latest columns (yeah, wise

My TAP column today returns to what I was talking about back in the winter

first; what Boehner devised to deal with his dysfunctional party was to let
the Senate go first. Then if most of his conference wants things to pass --
even if they want to publicly oppose them -- they get a vote. One effect,
which we see now, is a logjam of popular items passed by the Senate and

A large part of the motivation of the Affordable Care Act is to provide
insurance to those with pre-existing conditions. Under the law, insurance
is offered to everyone at a price based on overall community risk, not the
risk estimated by the insurance company based on a person's particular
characteristics. That has been deemed "fair" by advocates of the law.

It is what holds you apart from your power. It perceives weakness. It

final illusion is the greatest of them all.
This last and greatest illusion is that you are less.
This keeps us at bay; relentlessly asking, constantly searching, always

someone, something, or someplace else.
It is never here, not now and most certainly not you. The specifics
matter not. What defines this illusion is that it depletes you.

4 Corporate Education Reform Talking Points That Are Flat-Out Lies
If you listen to the buzz coming from the airwaves about education reform

A Canadian on Horseback....(A Mary Mackie Remembrance Day Special)
*A Canadian on Horseback*
*9 July 1944 Memorialized in Bronze*
*Written By Mary Mackie*
Canadian and British troops liberated Caen after 33 days of the bloodiest
battles of the Normandy campaign.
A small but dramatic ceremony in the main square marked the historic first
raising of the French flag, but a Canadian artillery officer on horseback
made the moment symbolically Canadian too..
Although Caen was one of the D-Day objectives the Germans also recognized
it as pivotal to their defence against the Allie... more »
DARPA's Flu Fighters Ramp Up Veggie-Based Vaccines
WIREDBy Robert Beckhusen

The military wants to boost vaccine production for the deadly flu, and do
so with tobacco plants like these, pictured at a Medicago greenhouse in
North Carolina in May 2012. Photo: Darpa In the event of a global and
highly lethal flu pandemic, we’ll need to churn out millions of vaccines as
soon as humanly possible. Not easy to do considering a true vaccine can’t
be developed until the pandemic has already arrived. So it’s not surprising
the military wants better vaccines that can be produced at blazing speed.
Preferably ones it can grow.... more »
Disturbing on so many levels
How many kids have been given the key to the kingdom and then crashed it
royally? Without a doubt the most spectacular crash was observed when GWB
bottomed out the World Economy in 2008. But don't worry it appears he is trying
hard to make up for it. Really who cant wait for the apocalypse anyway?
Least we Forget
My Grandfather enlisted at age 17 to fight the Hun for King and Country.
Ypres, Passchendaele, Vimy Ridge and too many other bloody muddy field to
mention he fought in them all. He lost a lung to mustard gas, but still
soldiered on right until the end. I knew him for over 30 years and if you
asked him about the war he would smile and tell one of two stories. Either
drinking and celebrating Christmas one year with the Germans in an informal
grass roots truce, or the time he was walking across an open field, some
would have said and then the red baron came down on him on a strafing ... more »

And on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in the
year 1918 the guns of the Western Front finally went silent and the human
carnage of the First World War came to a close – in the West, anyway, if
not in the Bolshevised East. Yet while the guns went silent, the results
of the war would stay with us, like a bacillus, for decades to come.
They are with us still.
The world that emerged from World War I was vastly different to the
benevolent, cultural milieu that entered it so optimistically

Breaking: Space junk falling to Earth
We've come to the point of space exploitation where these things are rarely

bigger news. Also too, it's an exceptional unit.

Virginia GOP rigs the recount
The result of the Virgina AG race is still outstanding pending a recount.
Apparently not at concerned about winning votes honestly, the Republicans
intend to rig the recount to get their man into office.
The Daily Press of Newport News, Va. reported Friday that Republican
candidate Mark Obenshain had an unofficial lead of just under 1,300 votes
over Democratic challenger Mark Herring. That tally did not include full
provisional ballot totals, and as of Saturday, a fresh rule change was
complicating matters.

Failed science is not bad science
This neat cartoon hints at the helpful point that knowledge of scientific
failure is still scientific knowledge.
If the foundation of knowledge is causality, as Aristotle affirmed,1 then
knowledge that A *doesn’t* cause C is as important as knowledge that B *does
*.
1. “…we have knowledge of a thing only when we have grasped its cause” (*Posterior
Analytics,* 71 b 9–11. & 94 a 20) and
“…we do not have knowledge of a thing until we have grasped its why, that
is to say, its cause." (*Physics* 194 b 17–20)

I'm A Believer
I was always a kind of spiritual person, but one who was repulsed by
religion. All my acid trips were spiritual. I talk to God every day. I
admire some of the incredible Gothic churches of Europe and the Vatican art
collection is spectacular but I've always tended to stay away from
organized religion and tend to see all of them as Satan's paws on earth.
Lately I've had Pope Francis on my mind. I liked him as soon as I heard he
had taken the name Francis. I've been wondering about embracing
Catholicism. The Church has way too much baggage for me and God only knows

A disaster
The disaster in the Philippines seems impossible to put into perspective.
Thomas Lumley at Stats Chat tries:
There are reports that as many as 10,000 people may have died on the
Philippine island of Leyte on Friday, drowned in the storm surge or killed
by collapsing buildings.
Leyte is roughly comparable in size and population to the Auckland
Region (about 40% larger). Fewer than 8000 people died in Auckland in all
of 2012.
A disaster.
That is a telling understatement.

The sickening first response of government to disaster
*THE SICKENING FIRST RESPONSE OF GOVERNMENT TO DISASTER*
Typhoon Haiyan is perhaps the most devastating weather event to ever
hit land. More than 10,000 people have been killed, and the full details
are still very much uncertain. The Philippines has had more than its share
of natural disasters - and man-made ones as well. What I find particularly
disturbing and unfortunately quite typical is the *first* priority of the
Philippine government to the events. As quoted in today's report in Al
Jazeera the President of the country used a photo-op visit to one of the
areas affected ... more »

A new milestone in debt [updated]
The spin today is that the New Zealand government accounts are said to be
“in slightly better shape than forecast.”
And Bill English still promises a surplus in government accounts “next
year.” (There’s always jam tomorrow.)
But today, we see that his deficit for the last quarter was still a
whopping $1.3 billion. (In 2008 it was $31 million.)
And the money the govt owes, its total debt, has just hit $60 billion. (In
2008, when they took over, it was $10,2 billion.)
Which is about $60,000 for every tax-paying New Zealander. (Of which there
is barely a million.)
Or about 28% of... more »
Maintaining Remembrance
There's a very interesting piece for Remembrance Sunday on the *Sky News*website from Mark Stone in Burma.
He visits the Taukkyan War Cemetery near the country's new capital. 6,426
Commonwealth soldiers are buried there, their headstones "lined up in
perfect uniformity," many mere teenagers.
I spot a Private Jones and a Corporal Johnson. Their names seem oddly
incongruous so far from 'home'. It is a reminder of just how global the two
world wars were.
Mark notes there are 23,000 war cemeteries around the world, in 153
different countries, bearing the graves and names of 1.7 milli... more »

DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW......
A US-led trade deal is currently being negotiated that could increase the
price of prescription drugs, weaken financial regulations and even allow
partner countries to challenge American laws. But few know its substance.
The pact, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), is deliberately shrouded in

want you to know about. Over 130 Members of Congress have asked the White
House for more transparency about the negotiations and were essentially

BitCoin roller coaster ride Weekend of November 9-10 , 2013 ! Zooming to almost 400 and then back to less than 300 - in a span of about one half day ! Pros and Cons previously discussed , the questions for BitCoin investors may be how strong is your stomach as well as your tolerance for insane moves this this weekend ? Naturally , if BitCoin is attractive as a safe haven , one must consider manic moves in that equation .
