8:54am MSTUSING TYPHOON TO STAY IN PHILIPPINES
Earlier this month, negotiations between the United States and the
Philippines to sharply increase the number of US troops regularly rotating
through Philippine bases hit a snag. Critics claimed American demands, if
met, would undermine Philippine sovereignty. Increasingly, it seemed,
prospects for an accord this year looked shaky.
Then typhoon Haiyan hit.
Since the ferocious storm blasted the archipelago and laid waste to the
city of Tacloban Friday, the Filipino media have carried images of US
military personnel aiding relief operations.

WikiLeaks reveals draft of TPP Intellectual Property chapter - highly secretive multinational trade deal sees light of day ! Comment on the IP Chapter that should focus attention ......“Compared to existing multilateral agreements, the TPP IPR chapter proposes the granting of more patents, the creation of intellectual property rights on data, the extension of the terms of protection for patents and copyrights, expansions of right holder privileges and increases in the penalties for infringement,” James Love of Knowledge Ecology International explained after reading the leaked chapter. “The TPP text shrinks the space for exceptions in all types of intellectual property rights. Negotiated in secret, the proposed text is bad for access to knowledge, bad for access to medicine and profoundly bad for innovation.” ....... “Particular measures proposed include supranational litigation tribunals to which sovereign national courts are expected to defer, but which have no human rights safeguards,” warned WikiLeaks. “The TPP IP Chapter states that these courts can conduct hearings with secret evidence.”

Fukushima updates November 11 - 12 , 2013 - At this point , I guess it's not surprising to see the Government of Japan continues to attempt to suppress " harmful rumors " otherwise known as the true condition of the Fukushima nuclear plant , that the Government attempts to suppress interviews with people other than " friendly government leaders ( concerning Fukushima exposures ) , that outside experts are praying nothing goes wrong and are shocked Tepco will be attempting the dangerous , uncharted task of removing the fuel rods in Reactor Building 4's spent fuel pool ( without outside supervision and direction ) .... Par for the course...... Six thoughts about the Rob Ford disaster
I’ve resisted adding to the flood of words about Rob Ford. But no more.
Here are six thoughts.
First, this is sad. Ford, as a human being, is a mess and any compassionate
person should feel empathy watching him struggle. Especially because he
seems to have no one in his life to say ‘I care about you, and you have to
stop this.’
Second, Ford’s hypocrisy is appalling. A month ago, a photo emerged of a
Toronto employee with his head on his desk, apparently asleep. Ford wanted
the employee and his manager fired if he was sleeping. Not suspended, or
disciplined. Fired.
But he uses illega... more »

the impact of Shakesphere. The reason is as Malcom Gadwall has recently
idendified and everyone who was a wiseguy had known for centuries is it is
better to be a big fish in a small pond.
If you can rule this pond by whatever means maybe you should move up a few
million liters. What is so interesting about our modern politics is we are
led by people who have never been a big fish.
Getting back to the Sopranos. Its all about big fish. Its all so perfectly

JFK Assassination Was A Defining Moment For Boomers
By Manifesto Joe
We, the baby boomers, are still talking about it 50 years later. We even
indulge in gallows humor. My old man, who won five Bronze Stars in the
Pacific Theater of World War II, was a much better shot than Lee Harvey
Oswald, and I recall that Christmas as being one more generous and affluent
than we could usually afford. Was he, my old man, the dude on the grassy
knoll?
More seriously, the question that keeps coming up is, where were you when
...?
My memory of it wasn't very remarkable. I was in the second grade. We were

Are STEM employment opportunities "tremendous"?
Sent to US News and World Report
In "The Latest Tools for Teaching STEM: Video Games," (Nov. 11), Karen
Cator of the Digital Promise company is quoted as saying that "We must
engage many more Americans in developing their STEM expertise because the
opportunity to find gainful employment is tremendous." Articles are now
appearing regularly in the popular and professional press reporting that
there is no shortage of STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math)
workers in the US. In fact, there is a surplus.

The aim of the mid-century Californian “Case Study” Houses was to introduce
to folk, now finished with war and ready to build, the many means both
technological and material allowing design to improve the way they lived.
All of them stressed what today is called “indoor-outdoor flow,” with broad
openings made possible by the (then) new technology of sliding doors.

Cancer awareness 49 plane flyover at Arrowhead Stadium Oct. 13, 2013......
* quite a sight.*
As you know the budget cuts have eliminated the military flyovers at large
events. Well, there's a group of guys in Kansas City who do some formation
flying in their own planes and that decided they'd volunteer to pick up the
slack.
They invited a couple of other groups to join them and before they knew it
they had 48 guys with their homemade RV airplanes signing up to join in.
If they had more time, they probably would have gotten an even larger group
as people kept joining and a 49th was added near the event.
One additional feature of the flyover was the u... more »
The BBC are so obvious in their bias
The Bank of England governor, Mark Carney, has said that the UK economy
will grow faster and unemployment will fall sooner than expected. So how do
the BBC report this?
'UK recovery takes hold, say Bank'
'Peston: Is recovery too robust?'
The BBC aren't scared of showing their bias are they?
Whatever the Robert Peston piece says, the headline for it sends a very
deliberate message to the person browsing the news.
David Dimbleby got his tattoo wrong as well
Boing Boing reports that:
'Famous, respected UK journalist and TV presenter David Dimbleby, 75,
recently got his first ink: of a six-legged scorpion. Unfortunately,
scorpions are arachnids, with eight legs. The scramble is on to identify a
face-saving species that the tattoo could represent: the best bet so far is
the Whip Scorpion, which has six good legs and two crappy, vestigial ones
used as feelers; and various scorpion-esque arthropods.'
Famous - yes, respected - not necessarily.

Life in Britain - a grand insult
David Cameron has made a speech calling for permanent austerity from a golden
lectern. This was, of course, the Tory plan all along. Destroy the
remaining basis of social democracy (the NHS, welfare provision, social
housing, union bargaining and higher education - all must go) and, even if
the Tories don't win the next election, their priorities do. By some
estimates the British people will now endure more than two decades of
depressed living standards as a result of this austerity.

Brave-ery in Cobb County
I'm late to this flap over moving the Atlanta Braves out of a perfectly
good park, but it's worth mentioning if only for how brazen Republicans
have become in their bigotry.
Joe Dendy, chairman of the Cobb County Republican Party, says that he has
two conditions for supporting the Braves' proposed move (h/t Jim Galloway):
1.) That Cobb County citizens won't have to pay higher taxes as a result,

*Score gains by public school students, 1990-2013Grade 8 math, NAEP*
*All students:* 21.88 points
*White students:* 24.12 points
*Black students:* 26.61 points
*Hispanic students:* 26.36 points
How weird! If the average score of each group went up by more than 24

That doesn’t seem to make sense.

As Bath Iron Works [owned by General Dynamics] pursues new tax breaks, an

received tax benefits in excess of what was projected from an existing 1997
tax-increment financing pact. The 1997 TIF established two districts that
were to produce a total projected revenue for BIW of $78.5 million and for

What Are Republicans Thinking on Filibusters?
At this point in the current filibuster showdown, most of the focus is on what
the Democrats will do, with Republicans blockading three seats on the DC
Circuit Court. It seems to me that Democrats will have little choice but to
threaten majority-imposed rules change and, if necessary, carry out that
threat. But what are Republicans thinking? I have no idea, but there seem
to be several possibilities.
1. They don't believe Democrats will really go through with
majority-imposed reform.
2. They're bluffing. They intend to fold at the last minute, just as they

Ray Dalio of Bridgewater the question of what happens if we exhausted the gas in the QE tank ? After effectively drops interest rates to zero and then embarking on various QE programs ( the current program being 85 billion per month split between Treasuries and MBS ) , the Fed is caught in a vice of watching asset prices being pushed higher , while said wealth effect is not being distributed throughout the larger economy. Even thinking out loud by the Fed about tapering its QE causes " a disturbance in the force " , so to speak . The disturbance that occurs when a ponzi scheme sees flows decrease. So , what does the Fed do next , wonders Ray ? Despite decreasing ineffectiveness , the Fed ( even if it slows for awhile its QE ) , will resort back to QE ( perhaps more than at the present ) , once the taper has its inevitable impact on excessively stimulated and propped up asset prices...... Paradoxically , while risk assets are being pushed higher due to QE , liquidity in bond markets is drying up ! Why - one reason is unnaturally low yields ( QE ) make low risk ( Ha Ha Ha ) assets like Treasuries " risky " if government support might go away ( taper talk ) .... Thus , we see another distortion ( not just risk assets such as equities impacted , but should be low risk assets like

to a school in order to determine school worth bespeaks the disguised
agenda of privatization– nothing more. Nevertheless, the grading of public
schools abounds. Reformers insist that letter […]

Sorry Russel. you’re wrong.
Greens co-leader Russel Norman has made headlines for taking the
opportunity for NZ parliamentarians to express sympathy with the 2,000
victims of the Philippines typhoon, and using it instead to tell the House
it is another warning for the planet.
The typhoon, the strongest since 2006, was the result of climate change, he
said, an urgent message to humankind that Mother Nature won’t continue
tolerate our wicked carbon-fuelled behaviour.
Norman quoted an understandably emotional Filipino “climate negotiator” who
had said "What my country is going through as a result of this extre... more »
Unintended consequences: US ethanol revolution causes 'ecological disaster' ......... Meanwhile , as Over 50 US officials are in Brussels to negotiate the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) , folks debate whether by by limiting health, safety and environmental regulations in order to boost trade, the US and EU are“putting the corporation above the nation ? Another red flag is whether the trade agreement could behoove giant corporations like Monsanto, who could use the new ‘de-regulation’ to sue the EU for billions of dollars if they refuse to import GMO products ?

Why I Expect Nothing Out of Bauer-Ginsberg
Sparked by my dismissal of the president's electoral administration
commission yesterday, Rick Hasen got an update about what the
Bauer-Ginsberg Commission is up to. Short answer: holding hearings, doing
research, planning on a January report.
Which is all fine, and I have nothing against Bob Bauer and Ben Ginsberg.
But I'll stick to what I said back in February: a presidential commission
is the wrong way of going about this, and Bauer and Ginsberg are the wrong
people to head it if the goal is to really change things.
In particular: presidential commissions are excellent for one ki... more »
Where the Wild Things Were
For the first billion years of life on Earth, all of our ancestors were
single celled. One day, we aren’t sure why, a hungry organism ate a
delicious bystander, and became the first predator. Predation inspired
evolution to become very creative. Some organisms became mobile by
developing cilia or tails. Others shape shifted into multi-celled life
forms. Critters developed scales, spikes, shells, fangs, and many other
clever defenses. Thus, one group survived by dining on the unlucky, and
the bigger group survived by evolving every imaginable trick for cancelling

they called the “project card” which was a short summary of the case, I did
see the term Moon Dust.
I located several different project cards that contained “Moon Dust”

coordination between Blue Book and Moon Dust, at least b... more »

I really enjoyed listening to *Start the Week *yesterday. It was everything
thoughtful, engaging radio should be - which makes a change.
Plus it marked Andrew Marr's return to the programme after his illness.
Its focus was on the poetry of George Herbert. That's partly why I listened
to it - as Herbert is my favourite poet.
The other reason was that Sir John Tavener, a composer who has fascinated
me for well over twenty years, was one of the guests. I was curious to hear
how Andrew Marr and he would engage with each other.
Herbert, as a poet, was wholly preoccupied with matters o... more »

ENDA (Banning Sexual Orientation Discrimination) Passes In Senate What It Will Mean If It Becomes Law
ENDA is the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and the Senate just passedit. I wouldn't get too excited yet, because unless
Republicans lose their majority in the House in the midterm elections we
