What Will Hurt Democratic Chances More In 2014, A GOP Wave Or Steve Israel's Incompetence?

Yesterday Reid Wilson made the point at the *Washington Post* that there appears to be a Republican wave building that could increase the GOP majority in the House and win them control of the Senate. Obama's popularity is sinking, the Obamacare website is making the entire healthcare reform agenda look like a mess, and the huge Democratic advantage in the generic congressional polling numbers of last month have turned into a bizarre preference for the GOP. We've just seen "The Central Park Five," the Ken Burns film about five young men of colour who were wrongfully arrested, indicted, and convicted of rape and attempted murder, and who served seven, and in one case, thirteen years, in prison for a crime they didn't commit. There was virtually no evidence linking the five teenagers to the crime, and enormous amounts of evidence showing they could not possibly have committed it. They were convicted on the strength of illegally obtained, coerced, false confessions. In one sense, this story is one of the oldest in the United States. As ... more »

Legal aid and admissibility of evidence

R. v. Carrol and Denny, 2013 ONSC 7072 (CanLII), [29] It is not the role of Legal Aid to determine what evidence is, or is not admissible, at a criminal trial. Where the Crown seeks the admission of evidence at trial, it is incumbent on the defence to not only prepare for the motion, but to prepare for the trial as if that evidence may be admitted. I cannot countenance refusing to admit relevant evidence on the basis that Legal Aid has determined it would not be admissible and therefore would not provide appropriate funding to defend against it.

I Like the Pope

Paul Coker at News Spike - 19 hours ago
*AT LEAST* two Popes in the latter half of the 20th Century were murdered by Catholic Conservatives with connections to US and NATO intelligence due to the perception they were "soft on Communism"; John-Paul I was poisoned, largely due to his firm intention to clean out the Vatican Bank of Freemasons, Mafiosi and international arms traffickers, but ALSO because of his perceived tendency towards Communist appeasement - the only foreign trip outside the walls of the Vatican he made during his month-long papacy was to give a speech of friendship and in support of the Communist Mayor... more »

Of course that's not possible, but there is a good possibility that *Letter 44* issue number one is the next big first edition collectible, IMHO it will be bigger than The Walking Dead. Think tanks, newspapers and Twitter

Here are some fascinating graphs drawn from a statistical study of the political influence/orientation of British political think tanks carried out by economist Andrew Whitby - a study based on Twitter. Using the property of *homophily** - *the tendency we human birds have to flock together with those who share our outlook and opinions - Andrew Whitby trailed all the Westminster MPs who use Twitter and noted down all the UK think tanks they chose to 'follow'. The Workers' Institute of Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought. An outfit nearly everyone, and I include hardy leftyspotters among their number, had never heard of until a few days ago. A. Balakrishnan, as with all little Lenins (or Mao Mini-Mes), has probably long-fantasised that like the dialectic itself, the WIMLMZT would become a scandal and an abomination to the bourgeoisie. Business 360 13: US Government Shutdown and Lessons for Asia

* This is my article for the November 2013 issue of Business 360, a monthly business magazine in Kathmandu, Nepal. ---------- The US federal government “shutdown” or more appropriately “slim down” looks confusing for many people around the world. For how can the biggest and richest economy in the world have its central government “shutdown” for two weeks due mainly to financial constraints? A government that can send tens of thousands of troops and heavy armaments in Afghanistan, Middle East and other countries around the world, is shutting or slimming down because of lack of money... more »

[Resposted from The Conflicted Doomer] Posted on November 23, 2013 by theozarker This has been one of those weeks when I felt like banging my head against the wall until all the pain stopped. The gloom, rain and cold set the stage for it, I suppose. But it went so far beyond mere physical discomfort, I couldn’t seem to put it into words. Maybe it was the week-long buildup to the fiftieth anniversary of the JFK assassination and the sense, looking back, that the assassination was the first blow in the long and merciless death of youthful idealism in this country, the first ... more »

Living in America these days is like being on a merry-go-round with a nitrous oxide tank attached to it as ride attendant Rob Ford is smoking crack while getting a blow job. This year, we’ve seen a noticeable escalation in the silliness, immaturity, venality, hatred and utter lack of accountability of certain figures who honestly do not know why their pronouncements and actions make them so reviled. And these people just happen to be the wealthiest, most beloved and powerful people on earth. Indeed, if any one year in American history proves we are the prequel for *Idiocracy*,... more »

It seems that the criminal big banks that brought on "The Great Recession" by creating the housing bubble by means of mortgage fraud followed by selling as tripple-A securities "collaterized debt obligations" (CDOs) consisting of doomed mortgages are now initiating another bubble by buying up forclosed houses, renting them out, and then creating rent-payment CDOs that will profit them without fear of loss because if and when this bubble bursts it will be the people who buy these new CDOs who will be the losers.

LOOKING FOR TROUBLE

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
The US likes to pick fights. That is what bullies do. In early 2001 George W. Bush sent a lumbering propeller driven US Air Force spy plane bumping up along China's coastline. China scrambled two jets and brought the US plane down onto Hainan Island. The Chinese held the crew for a while and then sent them home. China took the spy plane apart and kept the interesting technology. Eventually they packed the plane parts into crates and shipped it back to the US. Sometime later Lockheed Martin (who built the US spy plane) built a military reconnaissance system for China on Hain... more »
