10:14pm MSTNow that Garry Trudeau's "Alpha House" TV show is (sort of) on the air, we're finally getting new "Doonesbury"s
[*Click to enlarge (a little)*] *by Ken* I don't know why I'm so uncomfortable now that Garry Trudeau's DC TV-fantasy is, well, not on the air, but in the Intertubes (it's Amazon's debut series). As the master of *Doonesbury*, Trudeau is a veritable god to me, and as a case in point I offer today's strip, from the "recap" series with which GT is apparently weaning us off the summer's and fall's reruns, while he's been playing with his TV show. (I really haven't even been able to complain about the reruns, because *Doonesbury* reruns are pretty terrific. And there *were* new Sunday... more »
Eco-Friendly Shopping
Holiday shopping is a lot of work, especially when we focus on Eco-friendly gifts. We have to research companies to make sure that their products are actually "green", browse their sites & catalogs for items which will please the receiver, and then be willing to pay a bit more because high-quality, environmentally-safe products typically cost more. Let me make it a bit easier for you! The newly redesigned Reduce Footprints' Special Offers page, which has been relocated from Facebook to this blog, has some great gift ideas. The Collapse Of America: The Writing Is Now Definitely On The Wall - China Caps Its Dollar Holdings And Plans Crude Oil Futures Priced In Yuan!
I have been watching all the economic news the last while, and what I see happening is definitely not pretty...Many of the reports of the impending collapse of the American economy have been purposely kept out of the Jewish run mainstream media, and I can see why... These criminals absolutely do not want the truth about the real state of the American economy to be seen by the average American.. Instead, these criminals are continuing to prop up the failing US economy and hope they can get their American slaves to g to war "one more time" for their glorious psycho state of Israel, th... more »

Due Diligence in Supreme Court of Canada
*La Souveraine, Compagnie d'assurance générale v. Deep tweets
I never get into internet spats but I was in a mood today. When my waste of Senator Richard Burr started spewing the GOP talking points about Harry's big move I tweeted him like mad. He actually responded to me today for the very first time on the twitter. It doesn't show on the ticker so you have to go to my twitter page to see it. And then you have to click on the convo to see the whole exchange. But the upshot was he tried to nail me with the stale quote random Democrats from 2005 trick. To which I replied, oh Im sorry, I forgot to tell you I was quoting Mitch. Then I hit him with... more »

Why I will never vote for the Christian Democrats
I put them last on the ballot, after the white supremacists and anti-science nutters. "This morning, the Christian Democrats blocked a notice of motion acknowledging today as the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. “It is very disappointing that the (NSW)Parliament will not pass a motion commemorating victims of homicide just because they are transgender." The Transgender Day of Remembrance is not a day of protest. There is n political activity, nor fundraising. http://rt.com/business/ukraine-eu-deal-suspended-088/ Facing its most important economic crosswords since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kiev has aligned itself closer to Russia, and has suspended preparations to sign an EU trade deal. Russia has warned a step west towards Ukraine would be "trade suicide" and result in billions in losttrade revenue and that joining the Russia-led Customs Union is more beneficial. DCCC's Forked Tongue In New Mexico
New Mexico's second congressional district-- which is bigger than some states-- is not going to be easy for any Democrat to win next year. There's a relatively popular Republican incumbent, a very, very rich one, and Democratic and independent voters will need a reason to turn him out of office. A Republican-lite candidate of the DCCC brain trust variety is not going to be able to do it. And, of course, the heavy-footed and bumblingly incompetent Steve Israel has come down against the progressive in the primary, Leslie Endean-Singh, and on the side of the more conservative Democra... more »

Reid shuts down Republican obstruction
It was a good day for democratic governance. Admit I didn't think he'd go through with it. Happy to be wrong. Harry Reid made history today. After years of threats and warnings, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and his Democratic majority on Thursday executed the "nuclear option" to eliminate the filibuster for executive branch and judicial nominees, except for the Supreme Court. Of course, everybody has an opinion but it's probably not going to restore the Senate to a functional body. The "Reid Rule," as supporters are calling it, does not affect the minority party's abi... more »

Obama Is Being Led By Republicans Down The Wrong Path On Social Security, The Same Way He Was On Healthcare

In 1982, Samantha wrote a letter to the newly appointed Russian leader Yuri Andropov, and received a personal reply which included a personal invitation to visit the Soviet Union, which she accepted. Kaboom! The United States Senate just went all radical and decided to experiment with majority rule, toying with the concept of democracy for a change. Awesome. Mind you, the filibuster reform only pertains to Obama's judicial (non-Supreme) and executive appointments. We Can Question the Word "Grit" but Embrace Research on Nurturing the Socio-Emotional
As I explained in a Huffington Post accompanying Angela Duckworth’s TED Talk Weekend, twenty-something years ago, I entered the classroom through alternative certification. Then and now, I was committed to the progressive education tradition. I soon recognized, however, why conservatives, as well as the new generation of career-changers who were then entering the teaching profession, dismissed progressives as soft-hearted, and soft-minded. Too many times, progressive educators have tried one gimmick after another to get around the reality that students must take responsibility for t... more »

Senator Strangelove Finally Does It
I can only hope that Majority Leader Reid considered that one day, when the Democrats are the minority party in the upper chamber, they, too, will need the filibuster for judicial appointees in case a Republican President wants to appoint Orly Taitz or Robert Bork's rotting corpse to a federal bench. But a couple of hours ago, after a false start last July 16th, Harry Reid used the long-threatened but never-used nuclear option and blew up the filibuster for presidential judicial nominees (save for the Supreme Court). The measure passed along razor-sharp party lines, 52-48.... more »

Quick Post-Nuclear Fizzle
The Senate has gone nuclear. My first notes are up, over at Plum Line. I'm sure I'll have more on this, but one quick note. Soon after the key vote, Harry Reid asked for, and received, unanimous consent for committees to meet. That's normally a routine request. The fact that it remains a routine request, even immediately after the Democrats acted, is a quick answer to one question: no, Republicans will not "blow up" the Senate to retaliate for majority-imposed reform. I suppose it's possible that they'll regroup and change their minds, but much more likely will be some sort of mino... more »

Can Hillary Clinton articulate a progressive vision the way Elizabeth Warren can? Or do you have to *have* one before you can articulate one? Ted Cruz can certainly articulate the reactionary vision. I'm not a Hillary Clinton hater. In some sense, I respect her and even admire her. But would I vote for her-- and all that baggage weighing her down-- for president? Bono 10,000: Is giving poor Hondurans money creating real change?
President Porfirio Lobo hands out the Bonos... and helps his party's election campaign Instead of all those complicated, multi-year Honduran development projects, why not just give poor people money? The Bono 10,000 program takes that approach. Families - supposedly the poorest - get 10,000 lempiras a year, about $500. That’s big money. Many people work full-time for $2,000 a year or less. Happy Birthday to Alexander Siddig, 48. What would we do without the good stuff? 1. Sarah Binder on the nuclear showdown. 2. Ezra Klein is good on Obamacare/Katrina. 3. Ed Whelan is correct: excepting Supreme Court nominations from a nuclear-induced ban on other judicial nominations is pretty much a joke. Which is one of the reasons that Democrats didn't act up to now. 4. I agree with Matt Yglesias about the doctors' cartel. I'd like to see a good post, however, comparing doctors and lawyers. 5. And Sarah Kliff loves the first chart in her post, which I agree is a big deal. But t... more »
Nuts and longevity: correlation isn't causation
For most people, their death is an unfortunate career move. It's been observed that children are born at most 10 months after their fathers' death and the IRS only collects the taxes for about 12 months after the death. Richard Feynman pointed out that he wouldn't like to die twice because it's so boring. *The eternal president and the dear leader in the representative halls of North Korea.* But there are exceptions. Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) was kind of promised to become an eternal president after he dies; the law was adopted in 1998. However, the Korean leader still liked some o... more »

Like most I do not believe the official version of either the Kennedy Assassination or 911. After all these years its very unlikely a clean story of what happened in Daley Plaza will emerge. The magic bullet strains credulity. This copper jacketed bullet "If so, this bullettraversed 15 layers of clothing, 7 layers of skin, and approximately 15 inches of tissue, struck a necktie knot, removed 4 inches of rib, and shattered a radius bone. The bullet was found on a gurney in the corrido at the Parkland Memorial Hospital, in Dallas, after the assassination" .Yet the bullet seems to ha... more »
Gold and Silver updates - November 20 , 2013 - Ironic how we see another furious gold slamdown , which caused a twenty second halt of trading in gold - the days after the FSA announced a " review " of gold benchmarks , including the London Gold fixing ( I'm sure in 5 years they'll find no manipulation has occurred like the CFTC found with its silver investigation )

Afternoon moves..... 30 Minutes Later - Markets Tapering (Gold Limit Down) [image: Tyler Durden's picture] Submitted by Tyler Durden on 11/20/2013 14:42 -0500 inShare1 The initial knee-jerk taper-on move was met with reactive buying (as per trading guru Steve Liesman's wisdom) but that hope bounce (really only seen in stocks) has faded now and *assets are pressing their extremes*. USD pushing higher, Treasury yields higher, stocks and gold lower... Of course, all it takes is for one algo to get the idea of pricing in the inevitable subsequent un-taper and to send the entire ri... more »
Cornering The Artful Dodger
The prime minister's story, Andrew Coyne writes, hangs by a thread: The Prime Minister has hung onto that single thread even as every other part of his story has fallen apart: as “acted alone” became “very few,” as “full confidence” turned to “acted honourably” turned to “deceived,” as “resigned” turned to “dismissed.” So long as it could not be proven that he knew what he denied knowing, he could not be caught in a lie; and so long as the whole issue was framed as “did the Prime Minister flat-out lie to Parliament,” the multiple lies told by everyone around him, before, during an... more »
How Extreme A Candidate Would Mississippi Republicans Have To Nominate To Hand A Senate Seat To Blue Dog Travis Childers?
I have a crazy old ex-boss why still calls from time to time, usually to harass me about politics, which he sort of follows from time to time. His father was a ward boss in the Bronx when FDR was president and later a municipal judge. My friend is a life-long Democrat, although he loves Rudy Giuliani "for keeping us safe" and because he's a HUGE fan of "stop and frisk." He constantly berates me for "your boy Obama" no matter how many times I tell him I voted for the Green Party candidate, not for Obama. And his ideal Democrats are Bill and Hill. He loves the Clintons. He's worth ... more »

Will Recording A Conversation At Work Land Me In Jail?
In light of the arrest of a South Carolina government employee for tape recording a conversation between co-workers, I thought I'd discuss a question I'm asked all the time in my law practice: *Can I record a conversation with my employer?* Unfortunately, there's no easy answer to this question, and a mistake can land you in jail. Illegal tape recording can have both criminal and civil penalties. The employee in South Carolina faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. My advice is almost always: When in doubt, don't. Still, many employees want to record a boss or HR at wor... more »
8 More Reasons I Haven’t Vaccinated My Daughter by James Maskell
8 More Reasons I Haven’t Vaccinated My Daughter by James Maskell Green Med Info, 20 November 2013 Last week, my first blog on this very sensitive topic called "8 Reasons I Haven't Vaccinated my Daughter" went viral on MindBodyGreen, being shared almost 50,000 times in the first week. There has been such an outpouring of support from all over the world that has been very humbling. Given the imminent direction vaccination policy in going, it seems like a good time to speak up. The original article I wrote had 15 reasons, but after editing it was turned into eight. Here are eight m... more »
China's State Propaganda Now Running Pro-GMO Propaganda Campaign to Brainwash The Population
China's state propaganda now running pro-GMO propaganda campaign to brainwash the population by S.D. Wells Natural News, 21 November 2013 NaturalNews) Just like in the United States, the Chinese media is trying to persuade the public that GMO food is safe, getting them "ready to accept" the lie that GMO food is necessary, to assure over a billion people that gene-mutated food somehow helps with food shortages. Because the urban population has spiked rapidly in the past few decades in China, the demand for meat calls for an influx of "supply" to meet that demand. Of course, sci... more »

Us vs. Them: Part XXIX
When we on the bleeding-heart, loony left hear about gang violence in Toronto, especially the shootings in the Eaton's Centre, Yonge Street or the Danzig neighbourhood, ... we tend to want to see the perpetrators apprehended, but there is also a lot of discussion about how these gangs and the accompanying violence, were the product of Harris-era cuts and neo-liberal hopelessness and austerity in general. Right-wingers, on the other hand, say that they have "zero tolerance" for these products of their own creation. They advocate police violence against them, stiffer penalties, leng... more »

JFK50: Bush Family Alibis
Yesterday afternoon at Arlington National Cemetary, Presidents Obama and Clinton joined members of the Kennedy Family for a brief wreath-laying ceremony marking the half-Centenial of their Favourite Son. As will come as a surprise to absolutely no-one, the surviving Presidents Bush did not attend - nor, of course, did President Carter, but then he is 937 years old, and currently building houses for the poor somewhere in Tagankia with Roselyn - also, he still hasn't been forgiven for whipping Ted Kennedy's ass in '80, but then Teddy was asking for it.... No word on whether Vice Pr... more »
It's harmful to teach wrong physics
In a discussion about the reasons of the accelerated expansion of the Universe (see also the first thread), a reader named BBB proposed that I was misunderstanding the goal of Carroll's claims that it's "wrong" to say that the negative pressure is the cause of the acceleration. Carroll's word "wrong" in "wrong way" doesn't necessarily mean that the physics is wrong, BBB argued; he may just say that it's "wrong" pedagogically and a completely different explanation "should" be presented instead. Well, I think it doesn't matter for the indefensibility of Carroll's attitude. In fact, ... more »

PanSpermia - Origin: Earth
How Life-Bearing Rocks from the Chicxulub Asteroid Impact must have Spread through the Solar System Some 65 million years ago, an asteroid the size of a small city hit the Yucatan Peninsula in what is now Mexico. The impact devastated Earth, generating huge tsunamis, massive wildfires and rapidly heating the atmosphere. It triggered earthquakes and volcanic activity and then cooled the world as smoke and dust blanketed the planet. This impact changed the future of the Earth, triggering the sequence of events that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs, the rise of mammals and ult... more »

Being Spectacularly, Criminally Wrong Has Never Stopped the Plutocratic Pundits from Getting the Best Jobs and Wanting More Wars (It's GOOD for THEM)
My enormously talented friend at Vagabond Scholar is one of the few who has nothing to apologize for, and he nails those who do. As for me, I think it's the commented upon smugness of the asses parading around as brave warriors that turned me off from the beginning. Not to mention my background in middle eastern politics. I've seen the same type of overreach and callousness from the current

Austerity in action
Stratford is a district in east London, part of the borough of Newham. At the beginning of 2005 it was essentially a very large round-a-about, a point of reference for people heading to and from London’s eastern suburbs. Even with the slow transformation of London under the long housing boom it was still not a desirable (read middle to upper class) area. Since that time there has been and economic crash and a rather large international sporting event, the aftermath of both has been to massively hype the cost of living in east London. The Stratford Halo development is a new 43 store... more »
Thursday Morning Linkage – Special Climate Negotiations Edition
The annual climate negotiations are going on at the moment in Warsaw, Poland. For long-time observers of the process, they have a Groundhog Day-esque quality to them. Wagner vs Verdi: Who was the greatest composer?
Now this is fascinating, especially if you have *at least *two hours to enjoy it properly. (Go on, you *know* you’re going to need to YouTube when it finishes.) It’s a debate over the merits of history’s two greatest opera composers, both of whom have their 200th anniversaries celebrated this year, held in the Paul Hamlyn Hall at Covent Garden—otherwise known as “the bar,” i.e., exactly the place where all good debates *should* be held. Enjoy. [Hat tip Russell W. And I think by now you might have some notion of which one *I* think should be the winner…) Content is copyright PC.B... more »
Not Every Conservative Is A Boorish Slob Like Chris Christie And Rob Ford But...
Can you guess which political party these 2 are leaders of? Conservatives report that they weigh more than liberals report weighing. That isn't just because more liberals are starving and poor or because conservatives are selfish, greedy bastards who inevitably all turn into Chris Christie and Rob Ford. No, according to the scholarly study by John Hibbing, Kevin Smith and John Alford, Predisposed, liberals picked arugula as their choice of salad green more than twice as often as conservatives. In a subchapter of their book, "Meatloaf Conservatives and White Wine Liberals," they tr... more »

Updates On Syria: Saudi Arabia Takes Syria War To Lebanon, OPCW Proposes Dumping Syria's CW Into The Sea, Turkey Faces Blowback For Backing Al-Qaeda
An excerpt from, *"Beirut Bombing: A Saudi Gift to Iran"* by Ibrahim al-Amin, Al Akhbar English, November 20: The measures employed by Hezbollah and the Lebanese security forces have succeeded in preventing a number of attacks so far. But the deployment of suicide operations will force the targeted parties to resort to deterrence through preventative operations, which is the only way to confront lunatics eager to meet their maker. *It is clear from the questionable behavior of the Saudis of late that their bitter defeat in Syria will impose on us more of the kind of meaningless blo... more »
