Very Radioactive Water at Fukushima Daiichi Must NOT Be Dumped in the Ocean
I've been chronicling narratives of Fukushima Daiichi's contaminated water for years now (academic work here and here). FUKUSHIMA DAICHI IS A CONTAMINATED-WATER PRODUCING MACHINE TEPCO must inject hundreds of tons of water into Daiichi's ruined reactor buildings to cool very hot and radioactive nuclear fuel. Since reactor containment is cracked, much of this water cannot be collected and ends up in the water table or the Pacific Ocean. That is why TEPCO built the ice wall to prevent contaminated water from the plant emptying into the Pacific. However, the ice wall has been a fail... more »

Alessandro Strumia, The Mansplainer
The world of particle physics is in turmoil because of a presentation by Alessandro Strumia, an Italian phenomenologist, at CERN's "1st workshop on high energy theory and gender", and its aftermath. By now the story has been echoed by many major newscasters around the world, and discussed in public and private forums, blogs, twitter feeds. I wanted to stay away from it here, mainly because it is a sensitive issue and the situation is still evolving, but after all, why not offer to you my personal pitch on the matter? Dogs Are Not So Smart
Dog owners think dogs are exceptionally intelligent - a whole television show was made about a dog named Lassie who got humans out of all kinds of fantastic situations - while cat owners believe the same about their pets. But are dogs smarter than other animals or pets? Not really, according to a review of over 300 papers which compared the brain power of dogs with other domestic animals, other social hunters and other carnivorans (which includes dogs, wolves, bears, lions, hyenas, and more). read more

BWorld 254, Duterte inflation in prices and political insecurity
* This is my article in BusinessWorld on September 27, 2018. President Duterte’s government can be described currently as having double inflation in both consumer price index (CPI) and political insecurity index. His economic managers’ usual and repeated alibi on why the country’s inflation rate is high is mainly because of external factors like high world oil prices and high US interest rates. This is a half-truth. The main reason is the TRAIN law that was implemented starting January this year. From the monthly data of inflation rate, the January to August 2018 or year-to-date (y... more »

We don’t have to wait, and our country is in desperate need of more diverse leaders. The BBC hide any reporting that Jeremy Hunt Compares EU to USSR
I've just looked at the BBC's dedicated Brexit news page https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/politics/uk_leaves_the_eu and I cannot find any mention of Jeremy Hunt's speech comparing the EU with the USSR. "At the moment you, European friends, seem to think the way to keep the club together is to punish a member who leaves, not just with economic disruption, but even by breaking up the United Kingdom with a border down the Irish Sea… "The EU was set up to protect freedom – it was the Soviet Union that stopped people leaving. The lesson from history is clear – if you turn the EU club into a ... more »
Growing Pressure for Clexit – (even from France) And it’s Time to Defund all UN Climate bodies
*By Viv Forbes* *25 September 2018* President Trump has extinguished all hopes that USA will join the Paris Climate Agreement. Since then, other countries are heading towards the Climate Exit. An increasing number of prominent people are joining the campaign to counter the falsehood that man-made CO2 emissions drive global climates, and to expose the threat that UN agencies will take control of every aspect of our lives. The list of dissidents includes: Tim Ball of Canada led the rush for the exit: *“Canada has more culpability than any other nation for creating and perpetuati... more »

Facebook's AI Can Analyze Memes, but Can It Understand Them?
What they have accomplished is to actually separate the wheat from the chaff and this is important as it all naturally reverts back to a complaint driven system. We want materiel to be challenged easily enough in order to trigger a review. That leads to a human review and the source is flagged easily enough as trusted or not. After which the source can cease been heavily monitored. It is a form of soft censorship that especially stops abusive suppliers. Those suppliers still have the option of developing a closed community prepared for them or should. I do notice that much... more »
Slavery-entangled Philosophy
Understanding John Locke is to understand the rise of human freedom itself. Criticism of his work is actually non historical apologism in favor of those opposing that concept, such as today's progressives. During the Restoration, James II worked assiduously to promote slavery in opposition to the rising acceptance of the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament now available to the expanding literate class. It was surely this that undermined continuation of his rule and saw his removal. this was something that i had never clearly understood. Locke clearly linked slavery direct... more »
Let’s bring back the Sabbath as a radical act against ‘total work’
I grew up with a traditional concept of the sabbath. Yet it has always been mostly lukewarm, even back in the day. We have long learned that efficiency declines over several days and that a days rest is the least needed to restore productivity. Biological rest s still poorly studied and needs real attention and more importantly, it needs to be taught. When i argue for the base four hour shift of labor, i am really arguing for at least one hour of preliminary preparation in which kit preparation and eating is undertaken. So we are already up to at least five hours or more. ... more »
The inner voice
This describes what science has been able to do with the inner voice. My sense here and reinforced by Helen Keller is that it may well be an aspect of ourselves that mirrors our own voice and that allows it to be even perceived. From that mirroring we suddenly have consciousness. It is also possible to do this more than once but that is clearly not wise and leads to mental health issues. This emergent inner voice also allows key memories to be labelled for easy recall. Thus we recall important decisions made years ago. It may be as simple as grasping that an important fact i... more »

Midnight Meme Of The Day!
*by Noah* As I write this (Sept. 26th), Señor Trumpanzee is on my TV, holding a press conference and speaking his usual 3-year-old style bullshit gibberish about judges, japan, socialism, cuba, his respect for women juxtaposed with calling Kavanaugh's multiple accusers con artists... Think about that one. It's the general insanity of Donald J. Trump, the ultimate con artist accusing someone else a con artist just as he calls everyone else a low life and a failure. Such projection! Watching Trump is like watching some alien from another galaxy that was dropped into the White House... more »

Venezuela's Socialism...And Ours
[image: undefined] This week we witnessed the horrible spectacle of Nikki Haley, President Trump’s Ambassador to the United Nations, joining a protest outside the UN building and calling for the people of Venezuela to overthrow their government. “We are going to fight for Venezuela,” she shouted through a megaphone, “we are going to continue doing it until Maduro is gone.” This is the neocon mindset: that somehow the US has the authority to tell the rest of the world how to live and who may hold political power regardless of elections.
