African Penguin Decline – BBC Fake News
By Paul Homewood As we found out last week, the directive has come down from on high at the BBC to ramp up climate alarm at every opportunity they get. The memo has evidently been received in the BBC newsroom, who broadcast this flagrantly dishonest piece yesterday about African penguins on Outside Source (at […]
Group disciplined for racism gives anti-Semitism training to Labour - Is this irony?
'A group whose leaders have been disciplined for anti-Semitism is providing 'anti-Semitism training' to the Labour party, MailOnline can reveal. Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL), which doesn't sign up to the internationally-recognised definition of anti-Semitism, has trained up to three constituencies so far, with plans for 70 more. JVL is promoting its own definition that says it is not anti-Semitic to compare Israel to Nazi Germany. ' Is this ironic? I don't know because I'm Jewish and a Zionist and therefore according to Jeremy Corbyn I don't understand irony. More here https:...more »
Military And Intelligence News Briefs -- October 16, 2018
*Dan Goure, National Interest:* *The U.S. Army Is Back* Military modernization is a process of continual change. Fortunately, while the Pentagon was forced to take a 20-year procurement holiday, the aerospace and defense industry continued to work on new concepts and capabilities. They also learned how to adapt commercial technologies to the military’s needs. As a result, the Army may have found much of what it needs to jump-start modernization at the AUSA annual conference. *Read more *.... *Military And Intelligence News Briefs -- October 16, 2018* Army Wants Bradley Replacemen... more »
Tortoises
I don't know if this is really very interesting, but I thought I'd share nonetheless... *Newsnight*'s policy editor Chris Cook is deserting the sinking current affairs flagship and moving to Tortoise - former BBC News boss James Harding's new media start-up. Former *Today *editor Ceri Thomas is already a Tortoise partner. And its first chairman is going to be Barack Obama's former ambassador to the UK and top fundraiser Matthew Barzun. Quite what Tortoise will do remains a matter of speculation. And that's all I've got to say about that.

Chasing More Footnotes
I have complained in the past that I am becoming less than thrilled with the UFO community. The reasons for this are varied but come down to a couple of basic ideas. One of those is that no matter how often a case is proven to be a hoax, a misidentification, a misinterpretation, or an inability to recognize the mundane, there are those who will argue the point forever. A recent post was partially inspired by this. How many times do we have to delve into the Oliver Lerch tale when everything that can be found points to an invention of the tale rather than a real event? The point her... more »
Khashoggi and Chaos: The Reckless Path of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince
*Gil Barndollar* *Security, Middle East* [image: Reuters] President Trump should reevaluate America’s relationship with Saudi Arabia before it leads us into disaster. The fate of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi two weeks ago in Istanbul has punctured the myth of Mohammed bin Salman (MbS). After three years of gambles and missteps, both at home and abroad, Saudi Arabia’s crown prince may finally experience serious repercussions for his presumed role in Khashoggi’s apparent abduction and death. The Revolt of the Masses
The Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset (1883–1955) was inspired by Nietzsche’s philosophy. In his best known book *The Revolt of the Masses*, he defends the values of meritocratic liberalism against the attacks of communists and fascists. He is critical of the ordinary masses and is horrified by the idea that they may attain political power. He begins his book by asserting that the rise of the masses is the greatest crisis that Europe faces. “As the masses by definition, neither should nor can direct their own personal existence, and still less rule society in general, this f... more »

The raggedy kaffiyeh he drapes around his neck is a bit of a turn-off; but on the other hand, he does seem like a well-meaning kinda guy. Well, like a programme that’s typical of a kaffiyeh-wearing but well-meaning guy, it brimmed with well-meaning and probably unconscious bias. The bias seemed so embedded - almost subliminal - that the thought of unpicking it all seemed wearisome and not really worth the trouble. Then I spotted Ja... more »

The Unintended Consequences of Enshrining Norms in Law
President Donald Trump signs a bill into law on Oct. 10, 2018. (Photo: Flickr/The White House) Donald Trump’s disregard for governing norms is by now well established. It is partly but not entirely explained by his impulsiveness and lack of experience with government. A norm is, after all, a constraint on action: Norms are “guardrails” to support the lawful and ethical operation of the executive branch. And Trump has no patience for constraints. Experienced and thoughtful observers of government have increasingly come to conclude that new laws are needed where the norms no longer ... more »

Jonathan Gienapp's book raises important questions about how a constitution gains authority. Most constitutional books address what the Constitution means or how the document should be interpreted. Gienapp instead self-consciously looks at what the Constitution is. In other words, he shows how the debates in Congress from 1789-1796 created the understanding that the Constitution is a complete or a fixed text. As he says (p. 19), "Initial efforts to ... more »

In today's *New York Times*, Paul Krugman takes on what he calls the "cockroach arguments" of climate change deniers. Here was an exchange the other day on the Open Thread: *Craig, 14 October 2018* Talking of Anthony Zurcher, this tweet is typical Zurch: If you watch the actual video you find that Trump was actually praising the head of the Union army General Ulysses S. Grant - a native of Ohio: *Monkey Brains, 14 October 2018* Yes, that was a classic Zurcher attack! Truncate the text...link to something irrelevant...and hope for the best (ie the worst for Trump). Extremes
Cologne railway station Kaiser at *Biased BBC* linked to two reports of the same event (a violent hostage-taking incident in Cologne) and observed that "one of these days does not seem to agree with the other". One came from Breitbart London, the other from the BBC. The Breitbart report sharply amplifies the 'radical Islamic terrorism' angle while the BBC report suppresses it. They are the two extremes. If you then turn, say, to Deutsche Welle you'll find a report which sits somewhere between them. So in the Breitbart report we get the headline *Cologne: ‘Islamic State Sympathis... more »

Kel-Tec's PMR-30 Is One Impressive Firearm. Here's Why.
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * The Kel-Tec PMR-30 blows every other gun out of the water in ammo capacity. That’s five times as many rounds as the typical revolver, more than four times as much as a M1911A1 handgun and 70 percent more ammunition than a Glock 17. *Another reason to choose the PMR-30 is if one is generally afraid of guns and gun recoil but wants a firearm as a self-defense tool. Nearly 10 Percent of America's Stealth F-22 Raptors are Damaged. Here's Why.

The future of city business districts in an Internet age?
The Atlantic has some ideas. These days, walking through parts of Manhattan feels like occupying two worlds at the same time. So what the heck is going on? * . . .* There are at least three interlinked causes. First, the rent, as you may have heard, is too damn high ... commercial rents have ascended to an... more »
At Oral Argument, Supreme Court Weighs Immigrant Detention
Mandatory immigration detention is an exception to the rule that confinement requires an individualized showing of flight risk or dangerousness. In 2016, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit narrowed the scope of mandatory detention, ruling that some noncitizens—“aliens” under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)—could show that they were not flight risks or dangerous and therefore should be released pending an immigration court hearing on the merits of their removal. The government appealed, and last week, the Supreme Court heard oral argument in the case, now cal... more »

*One Perspective* *"In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."* I think of this quote often these days when the media attacks the President for doing the right thing. There's a lot of blindness inside the beltway, in the hallowed halls of the mainstream media, at Satan's Vatican and the rest of America's elite universities. And I'm not saying that wisdom is reposed in fly-over country exclusively, but even one eye is better than being totally blind - in a metaphorical sense. The nation elected Donald Trump as president. Time for Australia to Build Nuclear Submarines?
