Recent Evidence Suggests Declaring A Truce With Our Microbiological 'Frienemies'
Researchers have historically focused on microbes in the body as
primarily pathogens that must be fought, said Eric Harvill, professor of
microbiology and infectious disease. However, he said that recent
evidence of the complex interaction of the body with microbes suggests a
new interpretation of the relationship.
"Now we are beginning to understand that the immune system interacts
with far more beneficial bacteria than pathogens," said Harvill. "We
need to re-envision what the true immune system really is."
Harvill said that this reinterpretation leads to a more flexible
approach to understanding how the immune system interacts with microbes.
This approach should balance between defending against pathogens and
enlisting the help of beneficial microbes.
While the role that some bacteria play in aiding digestion is better
known, microbes assist in improving body functions, including
strengthening the immune system and responding to injuries.

Slow Money: A Q&A With Woody Tasch
Thu Mar 14, 2013 13:17
Slow
Food USA sits down with Woody Tasch, the Founder and Chairman of Slow
Money to talk about resourcing good, clean, and fair enterprises.
Q: What first inspired you to create Slow Money?
A: During the 1990s, first as Treasurer of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation and next as Chairman of Investors’ Circle, I had promoted the idea of patient capital, an approach to venture capital that looked away from where’s-the-next-Apple and towards a time horizon that was more in synch with natural cycles and intergenerational equity. Then, in 2000, I had the wonderful good fortune to visit Slow Food headquarters in Bra. I was immediately struck by a few questions: If we want Slow Food, and all of the small food enterprises that are necessary to preserve and restore it, aren’t we going to have use our investment dollars as well as our consumer dollars? And how can we enjoy our Slow Food while our money is zooming around the planet invested in companies of the monoculture? At a more visceral level than that, I was so utterly impressed by the beauty and depth of Slow Food’s vision and the power of Carlo Petrini’s voice that it was obvious: Patient Capital plus Slow Food equals Slow Money. Little did I know that after several years of gestation, this would lead me to write Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms and Fertility Mattered, and, thence, to the emergent Slow Money network.
Q: Slow Money is supporting Slow Food’s Gardens in Africa program. What is it about the program that you find compelling?
A: When I told Carlo that we were interested in doing a bit of fund-raising for Slow Food, this is where he asked that we focus. Over time, I hope Slow Money will become one of Slow Foods’ best friends, exploring collaboration on multiple levels.
Q: How have you seen the changes in the economy in the past few years affect small food enterprises?
A: I don’t see the local food movement in the U.S. as a response to short-term economic challenges. Rather, I see it as a response to a few generations of industrialization and globalization. That said, it is surely true that if I had stood up in public ten years ago and starting talking about “Slow Money,” it would have been a very different conversation. The 1,000 pt. drop in the Dow, Bernie Madoff, the derivatives craziness, ultra-fast trading—all this creates a different context within which to put the word “slow” together with the word “money.” I see investing in small food enterprises—small and mid-size organic farms, grain mills, creameries, restaurants and the like—as part of a larger process of economic restructuring. Fixing what’s broken in the food system is a critical step in fixing what’s broken in the economy as a whole.

I’m in my swimsuit sitting on what looks like a theme park ride, about to travel a mile into a mountain in Austria. It is 100F (38C) and sweat drips from every pore. I’m trying an amazing treatment.
At the Gastein healing caves, in Radhausberg mountain, a controversial form of therapy with radioactive radon gas is used to treat a long list of medical conditions, including arthritis and other joint pain, chronic bronchitis and skin conditions such as my psoriasis.
The medical staff are evangelical about the healing benefits of the low-level radon gas found in the caves: they say it can offer sustained pain relief, reduce the need for medication, stimulate the body’s anti-inflammatory abilities and help people who have suffered for years.
Nuclear Radiation - Friend or Enemy ?

If one happens to go into the history of
nuclear technology, the incidence of unappreciated incidents as
reported in Wikipedia is startling. Against the safety of plants one
needs to also balance an appreciation of the risks of mining
exploration, old sites, etc. The Navajo in the USA have radioactive
contamination of their drinking water, for instance. Worse, it isn’t
hard to find indications that news suppression by the Canadian
government of deaths and sickness in Elliott Lake were of such extremity
as to snuff news of deaths of miners from cancer of rates of
50%…comparable to what the kids at Fort Chipewayan note in deaths of
parents from water pollution from Fort MacMurray. So those ( Ft. Chip) are not
‘radiation deaths’ per se : but mineral extraction obviously exposes
toxins which kill.

Helen Caldicott may be ‘over the top’ to you with her warnings about non-linear effects of radiation exposure – she had a seminar March 5,6 – but there have been very odd stories about the situation in Fukushima, including those which note US military supplying feedstocks which includ plutonium and of storage of used fuel dependent on constant cooling fort safety.
