Abandoned wolf pup adopted by a Russian woman now live together in her house
Kira is a wolf. She was abandoned by her mother when she was 3 days old and couldn’t survive in the wild because of that. Thankfully, a Russian woman named Alida decided to take her in, raise her, and train her so she could have another chance in life. Alida had to work hard to domesticate Kira. Wolves are scared of new things, so a lot of socialization was needed. Kira met with grownups, kids, and other animals. She went to all sorts of places and now she’s a fully domesticated wolf that wouldn’t hurt anyone. “Kira’s mom used to live with a family, but they didn’t manage to take c... read more

Sunday morning music
D-Day, the 6th of June 1944, marked the beginning of the end of World War II in the Western European theater. The Allied armies invaded five beaches in Normandy, and by nightfall had established a foothold on the continent of Europe that would lead to the elimination of Nazi forces in the West within a year. Germany, tied down by her far larger and bloodier battles with the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front, could not muster enough forces to stop the Western invaders. Her defeat was now inevitable. Perhaps the best-known music associated with D-Day is the theme to the movie ... read more
Stimulus Check News: How Joe Biden Helped Americans (Is More Money Coming?)
*Eli Fuhrman* *Stimulus, * The money is spent and the data is in. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Now that the third round of stimulus payments appears to be approaching its end – with no signs of a fourth round of payments on the horizon – new research has become available regarding how many Americans spent the stimulus money that they received over the course of the three separate payments, and how that spending impacted the economy. The federal government has so far carried out three separate rounds of direct stimulus payments intended to support Americans through the CO... read more
The New USS Enterprise Will Be the Greatest Aircraft Carrier to Ever Sail
*Kris Osborn* *U.S. Navy, Americas* Most of the technologies are expected to be quite similar to the first two Ford-class carriers, yet they will likely integrate more quickly given that the Navy has had practice with the Kennedy and Ford. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The Enterprise is part of a Navy “two-carrier” buy plan designed by the Navy to lower production costs and streamline technological integration. The fourth Ford-class carrier, called CVN 81 is already progressing through several key planning and preparation phases. Progressing quietly beneath the ongoing dis... read more

In October 2020, the crew of the Russian Navy’s nuclear-powered submarine *Oryol* (K-266 *Orel*) took part in an exercise in the Barents and reportedly fired a P700 Granit anti-ship cruise missile from a submerged position. The Board of Directors turn four this week, if you can believe such a thing. Time flies. In the meantime, here's some reading from this week. *Against Metrics: How Measuring Performance By Numbers Backfires* Not really about education, except that it totally is. One more argument against data-driven lunacy. *Unpacking Nonsense: Knowledge as Commodity* I always feel smarter when I read something from Paul Thomas. UK gene editing public consultation announcement expected mid-June
This month the UK government is expected to follow through on Boris Johnson’s promise to “liberate the UK’s extraordinary bioscience sector from anti–genetic modification rules” by removing safety checks and (probably) GMO labelling and traceability from some crops and livestock made with experimental new genetic engineering techniques. It comes after a public consultation that – as the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR, “the UK’s pre-eminent progressive think tank”) – concluded gave every impression of the decision having already been made, with the consultation being a ... read more

Only One Marine Survived Japan’s Massacre of Prisoners at Palawan
*Warfare History Network* *World War II, Asia* At war’s end, the Japanese killed their prisoners at Palawan, a POW camp in the Philippines, but one brave Marine survived to tell the story. Superior Private Tomisaburo Sawa of the Imperial Japanese Army fixed the bayonet on his Type 99 Arisaka rifle and carefully checked to make sure the weapon was loaded. From his position on the veranda of the prison guard barracks, he watched as members of his platoon advanced across the courtyard. The POWs that Sawa were in charge of didn’t know it, but many would soon become victims of the now... read more
2022 Defense Budget: The Future of the U.S. Military Is Now Clear
*Sebastien Roblin* *Defense Spending, * It's quite the impressive shopping list. On May 28, the Department of Defense released its $752.9 billion defense budget request for 2022—a document which will almost certainly be subject to the extensive back-and-forth in Congress before being signed into law. Though the budget will certainly be revised, it nonetheless serves as a guide to the Biden-era Department of Defense’s priorities, with a record $112 billion devoted to research and development of future technologies at the expense of reducing forces in the near term. Why France Insisted on Nuclear Independence
*Steve Weintz* *Nuclear Weapons, Europe* France's journey towards its own nuclear weapon took some twists and turns. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *By the 1980s France possessed both a vibrant civil nuclear power industry but also robust nuclear military might. Once Europe had trembled under the tramp of French boots; twice Paris had fallen to a foe; three times France had succumbed to invasion. 5 Wars That Changed the Face of the World

Here’s What You Need to Remember: All wars are awful. Some wars are much, much more awful than others. This is by no means a comprehensive list, nor does it comprise anything but a fraction of the overall deaths in wars in human history.
Scopul evoluției - O perspectivă de M.N. Hopkins
The 30-Year Reign of the M203 Grenade Launcher
*Kyle Mizokami* *National Security, Americas* U.S. ground forces are clearly committed to the grenade launcher concept. *Here’s What You Need to Remember: *One of the most powerful weapons available to U.S. Army and Marine Corps infantry is a grenade launcher designed to fit underneath the M16 rifle. The M203 grenade launcher gave soldiers unprecedented grenade range in a compact, durable package.
