Nicaragua’s Benedict Arnolds – political opposition as organized crime
Ever since they lost badly in the 2011 elections to the Frente Sandinista, Nicaragua’s political opposition has divided into conventional political parties working in the country’s legislature and an extra-parliamentary opposition based in local NGOs. The U.S. government, in particular, gave up supporting Nicaragua’s opposition political parties financially so as to focus on consolidating an opposition bloc exploiting the figure of “civil society” but excluding the country’s main labor and rural workers’ organizations and the cooperative movement. The member organizations of this ex... read more

Meeting Navy CO at BIW
Yesterday four of us peaceniks returned to the Navy compound gate at Bath Iron Works (BIW) for an hour as part of our bi-weekly vigils. As we've come to expect we are now seeing more sailors (of all ranks) turn their eyes to the ground as they pass us by. More than a third of those passing me who refused a flyer made sure to say, 'We can't take one'. That means of course they have been ordered by their commander to 'stand down'! No interaction with those 'activists'. It's a big mistake because it causes the wheels to turn and many sailors (liked happened to me during my tim... read more

Here we will calculate\[ \zeta(4) = 1 + \frac{1}{2^4} + \frac{1}{3^4}+ \dots = \frac{\pi^4}{90}. \] This sum appears in the simplest calculation of the Stefan-Boltzmann constant, a coefficient in front of the power of temperature that determines the total energy radiated by the black body (the integral of the Planck curve over frequencies).
