A British Military Base On The South China Sea?
Google Maps *CNN:* *A British military base on the South China Sea* Hong Kong (CNN)When the British defense minister revealed this week that new military bases were being considered in Asia, critics questioned whether London has the money -- or strategic vision -- to carry out such a plan. But an examination of recent British defense initiatives shows that far from being an off-the-cuff play, a base in Asia would be a logical extension of moves made over the last few years. Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson broached ideas for a post-Brexit British military in an interview with t... more »

DONALD TRUMP IS THE ONLY PERSON IN HISTORY WHO EVER SURVIVED BAD PRESS, ACCORDING TO CHRIS CILLIZZA
Representative Rashida Tlaib used a bad word in reference to President Trump, and Chris Cillizza is on it: Hours after being sworn in as a freshman member of the 116th Congress, Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib told a crowd of liberal activists of her plans for President Donald Trump: "We're gonna go in there and we're going to impeach the motherf****r." ... What Tlaib did on Thursday night might feel good for Democrats.... But it almost certainly is the wrong strategy if Democrats want to beat Trump in 2020. Why? Well, put as simply as possible: Never wrestle with a pig beca... more »

The Future of Vulnerabilities Equities Processes Around the World
As governments increasingly find themselves needing information from networked sources for law enforcement, intelligence, and military purposes, one of the most difficult dilemmas they face concerns the use of so-called zero day vulnerabilities—previously unknown flaws or bugs that can sometimes be exploited to gain access to servers that house information or control networks and infrastructure. Governments often have researchers looking for these flaws, and sometimes, governments purchase them on the open market. But when governments find such vulnerabilities, should they quickly... more »

Unraveling of Fragile Alliances, Including Liberal Democracy

Gender, sex, and buying a firearm
The latest round in the gender wars is amusing to me as a gun owner. It seems the ATF will accept non-gender-specific ID documents, but the applicant for a background check must still identify their sex as male or female. *Neither statute nor regulation require the identification document contain the person’s sex. Therefore, identification documents issued with binary, non-binary, or no sex designation may be used as an identification document.* For example, a military identification card is a valid identification document and does not contain a sex or gender; see ATF Ruling 2001... more »

Recent Apple (and FAANG) rally was the dotcom bubble lite v2.0

Why Did Trump Ask Iraq For Its Oil?
(AFP) In November 2018, Axios reported that President Trump twice asked Iraq’s Prime Minister Haidar Abadi for Iraq’s oil. This was an embarrassment to the president’s staff, but the question of why Trump would make such a ridiculous request not once, but twice was never answered. It stems from his world view, which is shaped by money and leads him to believes that the U.S. should use its military to make a profit. President Trump twice asked PM Abadi for Iraq’s petroleum to repay for the U.S. invasion. The first time was in March 2016 when Abadi visited the White House. Trump sai... more »

B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber: The Air Force's "Silver Bullet" Super Weapon
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * The air force does not have enough of them. *The B-2 was the first plane to use of the GPS-guided JDAM bombs marking a turning point in aerial warfare towards the widespread use of cheaper precision-guided weapons. * Since its inception in 1947, the U.S. Air Force has been deeply invested in operating long-range strategic bomber for nuclear deterrence. However, by the 1960s it grew clear that high-flying B-52 bombers had poor odds of surviving the Soviet Union’s growing network of high-speed interceptors and surface-to-air missiles. VIDEO: Russia Is Showing Off Its Su-57 Stealth Fighter (With an Interesting New Feature)
*Mark Episkopos* *Security, * But does it matter? *While the Su-57’s paint scheme is unlikely to make a significant operational difference, it serves another purpose: It looks good.* Russia has aggressively marketed the development of its flagship, fifth-generation stealth fighter over the past few months. Is Canada's Air Force Dying?
*Michael Peck* *Security, * And what does this say about America's air force? *Canada's woes are also a warning to the U.S. military. * The northernmost tier of North America's air defense has problems. Canada's air force lacks enough jet fighters to meet its North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) or NATO requirements, according to Canadian government auditors. And that raises questions about whether the U.S. Air Force can meet increased demands to prepare for a war with Russia or China. *(This first appeared last month.)* Either way, the report by Canada's Office of the Au... more »
Meet the Chauchat: The Worst Machine Gun Ever Made
*Kyle Mizokami* *, * This is why *It’s clear that if the Chauchat could have been replaced, it would have been. But it could not be replaced; there was nothing to replace it with.* One day at the auction house, someone left a pile of guns on the ground. This was not at all unusual. At the very bottom, wrapped in moving blankets, was a pile of scrap metal. I parted the blanket gently to expose more of whatever I was seeing — gently because the metal had a patina of dirty age and I didn’t want to stick myself. (This first appeared several years ago.) A Qualified Defense of the Barr Memo: Part I
Daniel Hemel and Eric Posner have harshly criticized William Barr’s memo on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s obstruction of justice theory. They say (in the New York Times) that the memo “seriously damages [Barr’s] credibility and raises questions about his fitness for the Justice Department’s top position” and (later, on *Lawfare*) that the memo is “poorly reasoned.” In my view, Hemel and Posner’s arguments don’t support these conclusions.
