'Broken man': Right wing rips Trump over no-wall shutdown deal
"Trump is a broken man," tweeted commentator Mike Cernovich, a popular conservative personality on social media with a passionate following of Trump voters. Cernovich said Trump had been outmaneuvered by Democratic U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calling her an "alpha." Conservative provocateur Ann Coulter wrote on Twitter: "Good news for George Herbert Walker Bush: As of today, he is no longer the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States." The influential conservative news website Drudge Report in a banner headline made a point of saying the deal contained "No Wall Funds." News site Breitbart, once run by former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, simply posted "Government Open. No Wall." The Daily Caller, another conservative news website, ran the headline, "TRUMP CAVES." Some prominent conservatives jumped to Trump's defense, however.Reuters -
U.S., China 'miles and miles' from trade deal: Ross
The United States and China are "miles and miles" from resolving trade issues but there is a fair chance the two countries will get a deal, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said on Thursday. A 30-member Chinese delegation plans to come to Washington next week for talks, he said, as the world's two largest economies try to meet a March 1 deadline to resolve their trade disputes, but Ross tried to tamp down expectations for the high-level talks. There's been a lot of anticipatory work done but we're miles and miles from getting a resolution and frankly that shouldn't be too surprising," Ross said in an interview with CNBC.Reuters -
Official: Asylum seekers to wait in Mexico starting Friday
The Trump administration on Friday will start forcing some asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases wind through U.S. courts, an official said, launching what could become one of the more significant changes to the immigration system in years. The changes will be introduced at San Diego's San Ysidro border crossing, according to a U.S. official familiar with the plan who spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because it was not yet publicly announced. San Ysidro is the nation's busiest crossing and the choice of asylum seekers who arrived to Tijuana, Mexico, in November in a caravan of more than 6,000 mostly Central American migrants.Associated Press
