Ten Yiddish words that went mainstream
I think I’ve used nine of these ten. It’s such an interesting language. Nosh, putz, klutz, etc. European Jews have had an amazing influence on our culture, art, entertainment and language. https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/10-yiddish-words-that-went-mainstream/? 10 years ago I blogged about Aaron Lansky and his goal to save Yiddish books. It’s still interesting given my librarian background, and I’ll have to go back and check on what has happened to that effort. https://collectingmythoughts.blogspot.com/2009/05/saving-culture-through-its-books-99-of.html

Sky Hawk: China’s Future Stealth Terror of the Skies?
*Michael Peck* *Security, * China says its flying-wing stealth drones are better than America’s. China says its stealth drones are better than America’s stealth drones. The chief designer of China’s recently unveiled Sky Hawk stealth drone compared the Sky Hawk to the U.S. MQ-25 Stingray unmanned stealth tanker. Like the Stingray, the Sky Hawk is a flying wing design, and made its first public flight earlier this month. Details of the Sky Hawk are scarce, though it has been described by Chinese press as a fast, long-range and high-altitude unmanned reconnaissance aircraft. Phys... more »
Problem: Chinese Troops Didn't Know How to Use Their High-Tech New Tanks
*David Axe* *Security, * The stakes are high for the PLA. "As China reportedly continues to develop weapons like stealth bombers, rail guns and aircraft carriers with an electromagnetic catapult, PLA soldiers need to pay extra attention to maximizing them," Global Times paraphrased a Beijing-based military expert as saying. A surprising article in Chinese state media makes a rare admission of a serious weakness in the Chinese military. True, the People's Liberation Army is acquiring high-tech new weapons that, in theory, match the best American, Russian, Japanese, South Korean a... more »
Karl Denninger analyzes the government's inflation calculations . . .
. . . and finds them wanting in almost every respect. How do you measure *inflation?* Well, the common claim ... is that you use the government's numbers -- specifically, CPI. It says there's no inflation so *there isn't,* so it is claimed. Sure. Let me point out a few *inconvenient facts*. First, CPI only measures some things. The name is *consumer* price index. In other words, it is only *intended* to measure the price of things you consume. That explicitly *excludes* assets. But you *require* assets to live, and the price of them *is inevitably paid for by you.* Then the... more »
There are two sides (at least) to every story
As a critic of the BBC whose main beef is one-sided reporting, I (me) of all people should always bear in mind that there is usually more than one side to a story. Here’s a nice cherry-picked image of the SNP’s Steward McDonald, which I’ve deliberately chosen because it makes him look a bit … … I was shocked to watch Theresa May in the HoC sympathising with the unfortunate member over his ‘ordeal’ yesterday in the chamber. And that was shortly after expressing sympathy over the bomb-blast in Derry/Londonderry. And these remarks were solemnly and emphatically seconded by Speake... more »
