QotD: The "favourite weapons of Imperialism": "protective tariffs, prohibitions of imports — limitations on emigration and immigration. This is becoming more significant now."
*"In the last decades of the nineteenth century, and the first decades of the twentieth, the favourite weapons of Imperialism were commercial weapons— protective tariffs, prohibitions of imports, premiums on exports, freight discriminations, and the like. "Millennials Try To Explain The First Amendment"
*"Millennials Try To Explain The First Amendment"* by Cabot Phillips "This month, a new study was released analyzing Americans’ perception of the First Amendment, as well as their knowledge of what it entails. As many would expect, the results were bleak. For example, 40 percent of those surveyed were unable to list any of the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment, while another 36 percent could list just one. Wanting to know if millennials at an Ivy League School would fare better, I headed to Columbia University to talk with young people about their knowledge of the Fi... more »

Senate Moves To Seize The Internet - Do We Need More Government Censorship?
Senator Mark Warner's (D-VA) office has drawn up a proposal for the US government to become much more involved in the Internet and particularly social media. They tell us for our own good they must protect us from "disinformation" and be able to determine the identity of each social media account as well as the user's location. Ironically - or not - this is pretty much what the Chinese government is doing with its social media and search engines. Is this the direction we should be heading? Is there a better solution? Tune in to today's Liberty Report:
Senator Rand Paul Visits Russia to Encourage ‘Vital Engagement’ Between Lawmakers

FL: Slapping Pre-K Into Shape
Florida's approach to education policy has long been marked by a striking level of hostility to both teachers and children. This is the state that tried to force a dying child to take its Big Standardized Test; it's also the state that wanted to force nine year olds to repeat a grade for non-compliance with the testing regimen. So it should come as no surprise that Florida intends to make life more miserable for four year olds. What do you mean, I have to repeat being three? Florida has piloted a new kindergarten readiness test. ostensibly to see which pre-school providers are doing... more »

WHY I'M NOT ANGRY AT THE GREENS
Despite what you may have heard, Republican Troy Balderson's lead over Democrat Danny O'Connor in the OH-12 special House election is now *greater* than the number of votes won by Green Party candidate Joe Manchik: Balderson's lead is 1754 votes. Manchik won 1127. So far, it's *not* true that the Greens cost the Democrats this one. Once provisional ballots are counted, that could change. Nuclear Armed Battleships: The Super Weapon That Never Was?
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * "Few knew, however, that returning the battleships to service in the ’80s had been only part of the plan. The second, more ambitious phase was a radical redesign of the massive warships that would have combined the attributes of battleships and aircraft carriers." *The result would have certainly been the most powerful battleship ever, but the concept was riddled with inefficiencies. Under the proposal, 2,000 sailors would have had to sail into hostile waters in an expensive, 900-foot vessel to attack just four targets with nuclear weapons. An Air Fo... more »
Why the F-22 Raptor Could Be the Ultimate Sniper
*Robert Beckhusen* *Security, * Air superiority is what Lockheed Martin and the Air Force designed the F-22 to do. But in practice over the Middle East, this mission normally means acting differently. *Pilots could get helmet-mounted cueing systems, which allows the pilot to target weapons where she or he is looking — the Air Force announced Raptor pilots would receive a high-tech helmet called Scorpion, but never fielded it. It’s not entirely clear whether F-22 pilots would want one, as these helmets — such as on the F-35 — are heavy and potentially dangerous in the event of a... more »
China's Military Is Getting Deadlier By the Second. A New 'Battleship' Is the Answer.
*Salvatore Babones* *Security, * This "battleship of the future" could solve the challenge posed by China's emerging anti-access / area denial (A2/AD) strategy for excluding the United States from the western Pacific. *That's where the battleship of the future comes in: it would give the United States a defensive option for limited conflict. For example, a future battleship could respond to Chinese provocations by disabling Chinese seabed sensors or cutting Chinese undersea cables. It could survive being rammed by enemy ships—a favorite tactic of the Chinese and North Koreans. A... more »

Likewise, she was outfitted with two or three of most major pieces of gear. Redundancy appears wasteful from the standpoint of efficiency. Why outfit a ship with multiple identical widgets when one will do the job? And that’s a reasonable objection for routine pe... more »
