"A Perpetual Illusion..."

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 hour ago
"Human life is thus only a perpetual illusion; men deceive and flatter each other. No one speaks of us in our presence as he does of us in our absence. Human society is founded on mutual deceit; few friendships would endure if each knew what his friend said of him in his absence, although he then spoke in sincerity and without passion. Man is then only disguise, falsehood, and hypocrisy, both in himself and in regard to others. He does not wish any one to tell him the truth; he avoids telling it to others, and all these dispositions, so removed from justice and reason, have a natura... more »

No Choice: Why Harry Truman Dropped the Atomic Bomb on Japan

Tom Nichols at Test Feed Using Fields - 1 hour ago
*Tom Nichols* *Security, * Critics of the decision to use the “special bomb” in 1945 are judging men born in the 19th century by the standards of the 21st. Nuclear arms are hideous, immoral weapons whose existence continues to threaten our civilization. To say, however, that Harry Truman should have sacrificed hundreds of thousands of American lives because of what happened in the nuclear arms race decades later is not only ahistorical, it is moral arrogance enabled from the safe distance provided by time and victory. Every summer, as the anniversaries of the U.S. nuclear strikes... more »

*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * Preserving the memory of shadowy episodes like the battle of Lima 85 may not heal the wounds of the past, but it can help bring about an honest reckoning of the mistakes that were made and inspire reflection as to how to avoid repeating them in the future. *Elite North Vietnamese commandos from the 41st Special Forces battalion had already scaled the seemingly impassible cliffs on Phou Pha Thi’s northside without being detected on January 22 and reconnoitered the most feasible infiltration routes. *Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * Today we’ll compare the Merkava to the Abrams in terms of the three vital qualities of a tank: firepower, mobility, and armor. *The Merkava also has one additional feature unlike any other Western MBT; its ammunition compartment can be repurposed to carry a team of four infantrymen. This is intended more as emergency field expedient—say to evacuate the crew of knocked out tank or wounded personnel—rather than as a standard tactical procedure.* The Israeli *Merkava *(Chariot) main battle tank is an example of a sophisticated weapon system designed ... more »

SO WE'VE BEEN HEARING a lot about racism these past few weeks. But we've heard precious little about *why* racism is wrong. The mainstream view of racism, when it's discussed at all rather than being shouted about over barricades, is that racism is about "power structures," that racism is in essence just prejudice plus power -- suggesting that racism only exists if a "privileged" person is "punching down." Here are three scenarios. These all actually happened. 1. At a party conference not too long ago, Nora Mulready, an activist and Progress supporter spotted Seumas Milne in the lobby of the hotel. She strode up to him and started ranting, peppering her invective with a few choice words that would overfill a swear jar. 2. After a Parliamentary session, behind the speaker's chair Margaret Hodge button holed Jeremy Corbyn and let her frustrations be known. As has been reported she called him a "fucking anti-semite and racist". 3. In the lobby, Ian Austin squared up against Ian Lavery i... more »

In Praise of Inputs

Peter Greene at CURMUDGUCATION - 7 hours ago
One continuing thread throughout modern education reform has been the focus on outputs. Let's direct our attention to outputs, preferably measurable ones, has been the refrain again and again. The argument is not entirely without merit. It's not enough to account for your work in the classroom by saying, "Well, I threw a unit about adjectives at them, and hopefully something will stick." We have to do better than that. But the complete rejection of inputs in education leads to the old drunk under the streetlight problem. That would be the classic story where a man is found searchin... more »

Thumbs up for DAFs

Greg Mankiw at Greg Mankiw's Blog - 7 hours ago
Today's *NY Times* has a long but ultimately unconvincing article about Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs). The headline and tone of the article suggest something nefarious is going on. But unless you think that future charitable spending is less admirable than current charitable spending, nothing of the sort is the case. True, the money managers make some money from these funds, but they do for every pool of money they manage. Is contributing to a college endowment suspect because some money manager will be paid to invest the money? Of course not. Moreover, these fees need not be excessive... more »

I'd hoped to get this post up immediately after the one from Wednesday Russia Seeks US Help in Returning Syrian Refugees*Russia and company want the Syrian refugees to return home.* *The UN looks to be putting up roadblocks- despite the fact that the right to return is a given.* *Or is that just for the tribe and Israel ?* *More accurately it should be said the entire anglo-zionist 5/6 eyes institution doesn’t want the Syrians to go back home- Russia, Syria and Turkey definitely want this to occur.* *Resist calls to return refugees to Syria- Chatham House* *"In the run-up to the recen... more »

Treasure Quest - Season Three

KRandle at A Different Perspective - 8 hours ago
Last Sunday (July 29), I blundered into the reruns of Season Two of *Treasure Quest – Snake Island*. In the last broadcast of the night, they were diving near a waterfall with a series of holes worn in the rock. As we left the team, they emerged with several artifacts, one seeming a gold sunburst of Inca design and several small, metallic llamas. Since llamas weren’t native to that area of South America, the conclusion drawn was that this showed that someone from Peru had been there at some point in the past. This was part of the treasure for which they had searched for two seasons… ... more »

"When Scotland Was Jewish" King David was Jewish, like so many of the top Scots? Alex Younger is the boss of the UK security service MI6, and he is married to Sarah Hopkins. Could Alex Younger be Jewish? *Omar bin Laden, son of Osama*. The security services appear to be promoting the idea that Hamza bin Laden, son of Osama, has married the daughter of Mohammed Atta. As I've mentioned a couple of times, a month or so ago Ted Lieu and I had a meeting with the leaders of VoteCommonGood, an evangelical group eager to help Democrats take back Congress in November. Their goal is to help put a check on Trump who they feel is immensely dangerous. We've been helping them plan out a national bus tour during which they hope to introduce Democratic candidates to evangelical communities from Bangor to San Diego-- with a big emphasis in Texas. NATO's Dwindling "Peace Dividend"- Cognitive Dissonance is Us

* To use the words NATO and Peace Dividend in the same sentence- let alone the same headline is a clear demonstration of the cognitive dissonance that is rampant in our very sick western society.* *NATO and PEACE don't go together. They are not similar. They are not comparable. They do not have characteristics that are the same. Therefore NATO could not have a peace dividend.* *Peace:** freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility; freedom from or the cessation of war or violence; **mental calm; serenity.* *Globe and Mail* Paratroopers of NATO armies take part in "Swift Respons...more »
