Ray Tracing Is Back Again. Is It Real This Time? Nvidia Thinks So
Ray tracing has been a hot topic since...well, at least 350 B.C. in the western world, when Aristotle described his camera obscura and wrote that the eye is 'a darkened chamber awaiting light.' Da Vinci was fascinated by it, as was Descartes. And of course Einstein wanted to understand light quanta. In the 1990s, software and hardware companies began to tout it, but like Atari Jaguar's claim it was a 64-bit machine because it had two 32-bit processors, it was a lot of marketing. read more
The Dog That Didn’t Bark
This post gets into political territory, but continues a theme on the importance of evidence in attesting whether a claim is true or false. The topic of course is the investigation into election collusion (itself not a crime) between Russia and Trump. Here is a status report following convictions yesterday. So... Impeachment Is On The Table-- But Can You Impeach A Whole Party?
Last night I asked Alan Grayson what he plans to do on this first day back in Congress. Best known as a tireless fighter for seniors, he didn't hesitate for a moment to say he plans to lay out the detailed plans for impeaching Trump. He has billboards and campaign signs all over Central Florida's 9th district (eastern Orlando, parts of Osceola, Orange and Polk counties) that say "Dump Trump-- Vote For Alan Grayson." Trump's first tweets Wednesday morning barked about how he prefers cronies who refuse to cooperate with the government's investigations. Who's getting a pardon-- an... more »
Solving the Tech Deficit on Capitol Hill: A Call for Applications
Anyone who saw Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony before Congress in April witnessed first-hand what I experienced for six years as a congressional staffer: the Senate and the House of Representatives aren’t up to the task of understanding how technology is reshaping society. Senior Members of Congress didn’t seem to understand how Facebook made money or targeted ads. And some couldn’t distinguish Facebook from an email platform or internet service provider. I started TechCongress, an initiative that places technologists in Congress through a one-year fellowship, to bridge... more »
Robert Mueller's Desperate and Phony Manafort and Cohen Blitz: Time to Organize
[image: Robert Swan Mueller and Hillary Rodham Clinton] For anyone thinking that the war against Robert Mueller is won and they can afford to not get out and organize their friends and neighbors to vote on election day, November 6th, Tuesday, August 21, 2018, should have been a strong wakeup call, a hard kick in the rear end. Paul Manafort was convicted on eight counts of tax and bank fraud by a jury in Alexandria, Virginia. Donald Trump's long time personal attorney, Michael Cohen entered a guilty plea the same afternoon to a variety of tax and bank fraud counts as well as pleading... more »

Will the Real John Brennan Please Stand Up?
[image: undefined] The battle between many former intelligence chiefs and the White House is becoming a gift that keeps on giving to the mass media, which is characteristically deeply immersed in Trump derangement syndrome in attacking the president for his having stripped former CIA Director John Brennan of his security clearance. A President Taking the Fifth
Here's a question that I thought I'd throw out for discussion. Let's say that one of the civil suits against the President leads to him being deposed. In that deposition, he is asked a question and decides to assert his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination, which is his right. Wouldn't such as assertion be a tacit admission that the President believes that he cannot pardon himself? If he could pardon himself, then how can he take the Fifth with respect to a federal investigation? UPDATE: Upon reflection, I see that in practice it would be hard to separate statements ... more »

Postmodern Art and Postmodern Philosophy
Marcel Duchamp Fountain, 1917Charles Jencks, in his book *The Post-Modern Reader*, points out that the term “postmodernism,” or “post-modernism”( as it was spelled in the 1960s), was not an invention of the philosophers but of artists. He says that the earliest appearance of the term was in the 1870s, when the British artist James Watkins Chapman used it to mean something like “more Modern than Paris, more Modern than Impressionism, more Modern than Modern.” However, Chapman could not popularize the term. In the 1880s, the term “post-impressionism,” gained popularity, and in the 19... more »

Subsidence could of course be due to both effects but the article below is too biased to be a guide to anything* Elizabeth Boineau's ... more »
Integrating US backed SDF into Syrian Military will Guarantee a Syrian Tragedy
*Tragedy: Disastrous. Calamitous. Misfortune* *I’m following the news coverage regarding these ‘negotiations’ and it’s like a bad movie playing over and over. Different title. Scenery. Actors. Same Narrative. It’s so uncomfortably familiar. Despite it’s inevitable horrid end. * *And, yet there it is again and again. * *Sadly, people are still enthralled (enslaved) in a belief that this time it will be different. What’s the definition of insanity? Oh, yah, it’s doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result. Read on and you'll understand why these negotiat... more »

Another Unintended Consequence of America's Anti-Russia Sanctions - Oil Imports
With Russiagate and its accompanying sanctions consuming the media's attention, there is one aspect of Russian-American trade relations that gets almost no attention from America's mainstream media. In this posting, I will outline the background to America's connection to the Russian oil business and the potential repercussions that face American oil refiners. I apologize in advance for the length of this posting but I want to supply my readers with all of the background necessary to make an educated appraisal of Washington's current and future approach to sanctions against Russia... more »
Can Corruption In Government Be Legislated Out Of Existence By... Corrupt Politicians?
While the DCCC (+ EMILY's List and the Republican billionaires funding No Labels) are busy making sure conservative, status quo Democrats prevail in primaries, stalwart progressives are offering hope to voters by offering new programs that will never be passed, largely because even with a big Democratic majority in the House, too many of them will always oppose anything they sense is "too progressive." Take, for example, Elizabeth Warren's just-introduced Anti-Corruption and Public Integrity Act. It may make sense to average Americans, but average congressional careerists will r... more »
Japan Transformed a Battleship into an Aircraft Carrier (But It Had a Fatal Flaw)
*Michael Peck* *Security, Asia* A postwar U.S. Navy analysis suggested the Yamato-class ships, including Shinano, suffered from design flaws. The joints between the main armored belt and the armored bulkheads below were vulnerable to leakage, and the Archerfish's torpedoes hit that joint. *Perhaps there was also bad luck. Bad luck into running into the Archerfish, bad luck in zig-zagging straight into the path of a salvo of torpedoes, bad luck that the torpedoes hit a vulnerable spot.* If weight alone could determine victory, then the Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carrier *Shi... more »
How the Russian Air Force's Worst Nightmare Came True
*Paul Iddon* *Security, Europe* So in 1997, the United States deployed its most powerful tool to get the MiG-29s for itself. That tool … was money. Washington bought 21 of the MiG-29s — including 14 C models, one B model and six A models — and flew them in pieces on C-17 transport planes to Dayton, Ohio. *Little wonder then why Washington seized the chance to assess these formidable fighters while simultaneously denying Tehran an opportunity to expand its own fleet. Today there are still MiG-29 operators all over the world — largely in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and South As... more »
America's Secret World War II Plan to Launch a Nuclear War Against Japan's Navy

Great Pyramid of Giza can focus pockets of energy in its chamber, scientists say
It is pretty clear that a solid pyramid will act to reflect Earth based resonance of all kinds into its core. The resonance itself is a massive Earth wave that is parallel to the surface of the Earth and readily carried through rock. It is focused by the pyramid into the center axis and more specifically into the center chamber because of the specific angle of the pyramid. Other pyramids do not exhibit this angle but all pyramids will have a maxima along the center axis itself and may well reach deep beneath the pyramid. We have certainly seen evidence of such an interest in... more »
