For those who would like a little more John Simpson, here's the opening of his *Radio Times *piece (no link available, so I'm transcribing it directly from the magazine, £2.80): '*The BBC hasn't changed'* *We're not biased - it's our job to give people arguments they hate* I'm getting really fed up with the complaints and criticisms being directed at BBC News at the moment. Not so much from our usual critics, the hardliners on the left and the right, who habitually claim we're biased because we're not actually biased in their favour. What Happened At The Polls Yesterday?
There seems like a great deal of joy out there online because of Andrew Gillum's come-from-behind win for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Florida. Andrew's an old friend who I've know for a couple of decades. I'm thrilled he won and Blue America was an early endorser. We were overjoyed that he beat two conservative Democrats, Gwen Ghaham and Philip Levine, sweeping all of the big cities: Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tallahassee and West Palm. The tough part comes next, when he goes up against Trump's nominee, far right extremist Ron DeSantis (who defeated the ma... more »

Turkey's Ilisu Dam (Global Water Blog) Basra is currently facing a growing water crisis. 17,000 people have been hit by colic and diarrhea, and there are warnings that cholera might break out. Second is the reduction of water coming down the Tigris River from the north due to a new Turkish dam. The dam project started over a decade ago yet the Iraqi government failed to make adequate preparations for it, and is now paying the price. The Iraqi gov... more »

What Privatization Really Means
We're living through an unprecedented age of privatization, filled with ongoing attempts to turn public spaces and public institutions into privately owned and operated businesses. The first impulse is to ascribe this to corruption and greed-- surely the goal of privatization is to grab more money, to profit from institutions and endeavors that used to be for the shared public good. But that doesn't entirely scan. The accusations are common, but I don't believe that Betsy DeVos is in the secretary of education's chair because she sensed a money-making opportunity-- certainly nothing... more »

What Exactly is Phenomenology?
Sarah Bakewell, in her book *At The Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails*, offers a simple explanation for Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology. Here’s an excerpt: So what exactly is phenomenology? It is essentially a method rather than a set of theories, and — at the risk of wildly oversimplifying — its basic approach can be conveyed through a two-word command: *DESCRIBE PHENOMENA*. The first part of this is straightforward: a phenomenologist’s job is to describe. This is the activity that Husserl kept reminding his students to do. It meant stripping away distrac... more »

Say Hello To My Little 3D Printed Bionic Eye
A fully 3D printed array of light receptors on a hemispherical surface is the first significant step toward creating a "bionic eye." Using a custom-built 3D printer, they started with a base ink of silver particles. The dispensed ink stayed in place and dried uniformly instead of running down the curved surface. The researchers then used semiconducting polymer materials to print photodiodes, which convert light into electricity. The entire proc... more »

Another day, another Jeremy Corbyn antisemitism incident, albeit this one from 2013. 'This is the moment police intervened at a Parliamentary meeting hosted by Jeremy Corbyn where Israel was described as 'evil' and a Jewish woman said she was called a 'piece of sh**'. What Happens When The Liar’s Paradox Involves Multiple Liars
The Liar’s Paradox is logical exercise that asks what happens when you have a know liar, someone who never tells the truth, saying that they are lying. Handling the issue with one liar is hard enough. What happens if there are more than one? On July 26, CNN ran this story by Jim Sciutto and Carl Bernstein: *Cohen claims Trump knew in advance of 2016 Trump Tower meeting*. It was sourced by their favorite guys, “sources with knowledge.” Presumably this is to distinguish them from CNN’s usual sources. An Army of Deer Ticks Carrying Lyme Disease Is Advancing and Here’s Why It Will Only Get Worse
This most likely reflects the steady increase in our deer herds and the complete lack of husbandry. The tick in question lives two years and only eats three times. This would control the actual population size and also collapse the tick population.
