The Ramones-- 40 Years Ago Today
I had dinner with my old friend Danny Fields today. You may know him as the guy who discovered Iggy and the MC5 or as manager of the Ramones or as the guy from the movie, Danny Says, that came out last year. I met Danny 50 years ago. I was still a teenager, in college, and he was ten years older and working in the music buisiness and seemed very much the ideal, cool adult. I had booked an unknown band I had met at a tiny club in New York over the summer to play my school in September, The Doors. I went to see them at the club every night for a couple weeks while they were in New Y... more »

An Analysis On China's First Aircraft Carrier
*CSIS*: *How does China's first aircraft carrier stack up?* The entry of China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, into service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) attracted considerable attention from both the Chinese press and military observers around the world. For some, the Liaoning was a symbol of China’s global power; for others, it represented a significant first step toward a more muscular and assertive Chinese navy. Originally built as a “heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser” for the Soviet Navy, the ship was laid down as the Riga and renamed the Varyag in 1990.... more »

In his op-ed, Coleman says that “science has taken a back seat at the UN,” and urges politicians to “get out of the climate debate“: On this Earth Day 2016, there is a great deal of frenzy about how our Earth is going to become uninhabitable, as the civilized activities of man al... more »

Why the Minimum Wage Is Bad at Reducing Poverty
The problem with minimum wage is rather simple It represent exactly half of the solution. State Of The Races-- Wisconsin Senate Contest And Presidential Head-To-Heads
To be honest, Wisconsin voters have had feeling of buyer's remorse for some time and there really wasn't any smart money on far right extremist Ron Johnson ever being reelected. Real Clear Politics average of polls for the Wisconsin Senate seat have Russ Feingold leader with 5.7% with 13 polls going back a year. Feigned was ahead in every single one of them. The newest poll was released yesterday by Wisconsin Public Radio and it shows Feingold ahead 51-41%-- a pretty difficult 10 point climb for Johnson, who is currently sinking, not gaining. The poll checked approval numbers for ... more »

Hillary Clinton Supporters Must Have Their Heads Buried In The Sand
If you are a Hillary Clinton supporter then you have either your head buried in the sand or are ignorant of Karma (the laws of cause and effect). Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton dominated the last CNN presidential debate by being allowed, with the help of the presstitute media, to gain the upper hand. The debate was orchestrated by so called neutral moderators in favor of Clinton rather than her only rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, who was shut out, tripped and drowned by a torrent of craftily orchestrated questions. There is a reason for the obvious biased reporting. Th... more »

Free Stuff = Free Society
originally published on CounterPunch Waiting in line to get into the Bernie Sanders rally in Brooklyn the other day, an interesting conversation about the relationship between colleges and democracy caught my ear. Corey, who was more than a little skeptical about the economic feasibility of Bernie Sanders’ platform, was saying that it didn’t make sense for a society to provide free college. Free college, he maintained, would benefit the youth at the expense of everyone else. That’s just not true at all, his interlocutor, Ramona, responded. It makes perfect sense. As you might expect from the BBC, the initial main focus of today's BBC News article announcing the public's selection of JMW Turner to replace Adam Smith on the £20 note lies with the debate over 'gender diversity' - i.e. whether there are enough women on British bank notes. The last seven paragraphs, however, *do* turn to the question of why Turner might be a good choice (as the public evidently thinks he is). In contrast, Sky News's equivalent article doesn't discuss the 'gender' question at all. At the end of the BBC's article the corporation's Arts Editor Will Gompertz adds... more »

I suspect David Cameron will be feeling almost as grateful to John Pienaar as he did to Barack Obama after *this *piece of 'candied' reporting. He stressed the "friendship" b... more »
Actually, "Neoliberalism" Is Awesome
Of course it is. It has delivered, flawed as it is. Please understand that. Otherwise i have two concerns. The first is that it needs to be accelerated by ending global poverty which will serve to strip out core imbalances. We need as much more of all this as we can get. The second it that we have power elites everywhere attempting to establish rents through secret dealings and that is generally unacceptable. Best practice tells me that all such advantages need to be phased out at a fixed rate of five to ten percent per year. The whole idea is contrary to free tradeth... more »
175 nations signed, Paris climate insanity hasn't come to force yet
*Era of consumption without worries is just getting started* Vladimir Lenin would celebrate a birthday yesterday so a couple of his true heirs – who want to cripple the world economy for much of the 21st century, much like their guru did 100 years earlier – gathered in New York to sign the insane Paris climate treaty. It's a treaty in which the green activists in every nation invent an arbitrary five-year plan and they help their comrades in other countries to enforce this nation-specific anti-industrial terror on everyone else. They schedule a new convention each five years where t... more »
Bombshell Revelation: Ted Cruz Family Linked To JFK Assassination
Ted Cruz is about to become embroiled in yet another scandal, as evidence has emerged that his father may be connected to the JFK assassination. Rafael Cruz was good friends with Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who is blamed for shooting former U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Jezebel.com reports: “The Enquirer has the disturbing photographic evidence that was buried in secret U.S. government filed, with Rafael Cruz, now 77, palling around with the man who murdered America’s 35th president!” the press release for the issue reads—before clarifying that the “bombshell evidence” is a photo o... more »
UN Orders Saudi Arabia To Stop Using Torture To Extract Confessions
The United Nations torture committee has condemned Saudi Arabia’s torture program, calling on the Saudi regime to stop imposing physical punishments, including flogging and amputations, in order to extract fake confessions from prisoners. The UN says it is concerned with the abuse of bloggers, activists and human rights lawyers who are facing a hellish experience at the hands of the brutal Saudi regime in their prison system. Presstv.ir reports: “Has Saudi Arabia taken steps to prohibit… corporal punishments, such as flogging and amputation of limbs, which are in breach of the conv... more »
Judge Allows Former Detainees To Sue CIA For Torture
A U.S. District Court Judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit against CIA military psychologists who developed the government’s infamous torture program, under direction of former President George W. Bush. Judge Justin Quackenbush’s decision to allow former detainees to proceed with their case is a huge step forward in holding the American government accountable for its controversial torture program – which resulted in the torture of at least 119 men between 2002 and 2008. Yahoo News reports: The ACLU filed the lawsuit last October on behalf of Suleiman Abdullah Salim, a Tanzanian a... more »

Supreme Court To Rule On Elton John Celebrity Threesome Scandal Case
Lawyers for Elton John and David Furnish have pleaded with the Supreme Court to extend a Court of Appeal decision to ban the British press from publishing details about the celebrity threesome scandal the pair are currently embroiled in. The couple have argued that the need for the gagging order is greater now than it was just weeks ago, as media outlets in the UK have criticised the pair for stifling free speech and setting a dangerous precedent for freedom of the press. After hearing arguments from the couple’s lawyers, Lord Neuberger, the president of the Supreme Court, said jud... more »
What It's Really Like To Be A Spy
*Timothy Dahl, Popular Mechanics:* *Former CIA Agent Reveals What It's Really Like to Be a Spy* *Rule #1: Learn to live a lie.* The complex life of a CIA officer is unveiled in this fascinating AMA on Reddit, which reveals an existence that is both terrifying and amusing, but never boring. Names, places, and timelines are redacted, but that doesn't lessen the impact of his words, as it's easy to assume his involvement in a number of covert operations that have shaped our recent history based on the information he can share. His answers are often sprinkled with humor and compassi... more »
What Do Voters In North Carolina Want?
*Not these two* Elon University released a general election poll that should make Democrats sit up and take notice. Short version of the hypothetical North Carolina match-ups: *•* Hillary beats Trump- 45.1% to 38.9% *•* Bernie beats Trump- 50.8% to 37.7% *•* Cruz beats Hillary- 43.8% to 41.2% *•* Bernie beats Cruz- 49.3% to 38.8% Democrats have to be crazy to ignore independents (over 40% of the general election electorate) by nominating Hillary Cruz, who independents just hate, not just in North Carolina, but everywhere. There is some good news for Democrats in other sections of ... more »
The Economy: “The 21st Century Greater Depression”
*“The 21st Century Greater Depression”* by Paul Majchrowicz “I became interested in the question of how an organization whose business plan is theft can go bankrupt during the Enron debacle. I was well aware that many companies are forced into bankruptcy so that the executives can loot the pension plan and that this has been an accepted business practice for many decades; out of fashion now that there are no pension plans to loot. However, the thefts were made possible by junk bonds that destroyed companies that otherwise were going concerns providing real products and services tha... more »
What CERN did, that you couldn't see!!!!!
HOLY FLYIN' FUCK ON A STICK!!!! I finally was able to get into the hard drive off my computer that crashed two months ago and get my bookmarks- including the back door hack into CERN. This back door allows me to see the data from the live stream going back for 7 days, while the public feed only allows you to see for approx 24-36 hours. For the past few days I've been watching CERN Very closely, and have noticed a few anomalies on the public feed, so I finally made a big effort to get my old links..... and what I just saw on CERN through the back door feed stretched out from 7 days ... more »

April 22: The best (and worst) Irving paper ever.
It looked like a normal day as I turned to the Opinion and Commentary sections of the Irving press. The editorial was yet another half-baked one about reviving downtown by opening a former jail as a tourist attraction. It's not an old jail - not unless you consider the 1980s the Middle Ages. And the writer still hasn't caught on. If we want to revive downtown, we need people living there - especially older people in walking distance of the stores on Main St. We need buildings that can house people as well as shops and offices. And those buildings also have to supply recreation. No... more »

*BBC*: *Belize-Guatemala border tensions rise over shooting* Tensions between Guatemala and Belize over a border dispute have risen sharply after a shooting incident in which a Guatemalan teenager died. Guatemala says the 13-year-old boy was attacked by Belizean soldiers. Belize says its troops shot in self-defence after coming under fire. Belize also accuses Guatemala of "amassing" troops along the border. Guatemala's claim to parts of territory governed by its neighbour dates back to when Belize was a British colony. "Let It Roll Off Our Back: Dodging and Deflecting"
*"Let It Roll Off Our Back: Dodging and Deflecting"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "When we are criticized or attacked it is important to not take it into our heart space. One of the most difficult challenges in life is learning not to take things to heart and hold on to it. Especially when we’re younger, or if we’re very sensitive, we take so much of what comes our way to heart. This can be overwhelming and unproductive if it throws us off balance on a regular basis. When we are feeling criticized or attacked from all directions, it becomes very difficult for us to recover ourselv... more »
Chet Raymo, "Lessons"
"Lessons" by Chet Raymo "There is a four-line poem by Yeats, called "Gratitude to the Unknown Instructors": "What they undertook to do They brought to pass; All things hang like a drop of dew Upon a blade of grass." Like so many of the short poems of Yeats, it is hard to know what the poet had in mind, who exactly were the unknown instructors, and if unknown how could they instruct. But as I opened my volume of The Poems this morning, at random, as in the old days people opened the Bible and pointed a finger at a random passage seeking advice or instruction, this is the poem that p... more »
Democrats Spent Millions On Gwen Graham-- Aside From Twisted Bragging Rights, Got Less Than Nothing For The Efforts
Gwen Graham is a Florida Blue Dog with the lowest ProgressivePunch score (27.45)-- by far-- of any Democrat in Congress, from anywhere. Her voting record is so right-wing voting that 5 conservative Republicans-- Mark Sanford (R-SC), Tom Massie (R-KY), Chris Gibson (R-NY), Justin Amash (R-MI) and Walter Jones (R-NC)-- have voted in favor of progressive legislation more frequently than she has. It's not just that her record is graded an "F," with the exception of Texas Blue Dog Henry Cuellar (Bush's favorite Democrat) none of the worst Democrats in the House have records anywhere n... more »

ISIS Targets Destroyed By American Air Strikes | Graphiq *Riyadh Mohammed, Fiscal Times:* *Is This the Beginning of the End of the Islamic State?* Just as the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS is making real progress on the ground, political chaos in Iraq is threatening to undermine those hard-fought gains. Commentaries, Analysis, And Editorials -- April 22, 2016
*Andy Critchlow, Reuters*: *Saudi U.S. selloff threat not to be trifled with* Saudi Arabia rarely jokes about money. So investors can’t easily dismiss a threat that the kingdom will dump its American assets if the U.S. Congress passes a bill allowing victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to sue it for damages. Though a fire-sale would be devastating, it suggests the alternative – an Iran-style freezing of assets – would be an even worse outcome. The warning to Washington lawmakers that the kingdom would sell its U.S. securities portfolio to prevent it from being seized was delive... more »
