10:38pm MDSTMargins of victory
With nearly all precincts declared... It appears Hillary Clinton has beaten Bernie Sanders in New York, achieving around 58% and winning by a margin of about 16%, and that Donald Trump has beaten Ted Cruz and John Kasich there, achieving around 60% and winning by a margin of about 20% over his two rival combined. The story is leading the BBC News website at the moment and the language used in its main report is interesting. Despite, it seems, achieving a bigger % of the vote and winning by a great margin, Donald Trump is merely said by the BBC to have "won" and that he "looks set ... more »

Did Human Limbs Evolve From Fish Gills?
Scientists have shown that human limbs may have evolved from the same gene structures found in the gills of cartilaginous fish such as sharks, skates and rays. Victorian era German anatomist Karl Gegenbaur proposed the idea a century ago but no fossil evidence came to light to back his claim. The Daily Mail reports: The discovery could shed light on the origin of jawed vertebrates – the group of animals that includes humans. Unlike other fish, cartilaginous fish have a series of skin flaps that protect their gills. These flaps are supported by arches of cartilage, with finger-like a... more »

Are There Too Many Government Secrets?
*Bloomberg editorial: **Too Many Government Secrets Make the U.S. Unsafe* “There’s classified, and then there’s classified,” President Barack Obama said in a recent interview. Unfortunately, he’s right: The U.S. government classifies vast amounts of material as secret, top secret and the like, much of it with no relevance to national security. This isn’t just a bureaucratic waste of money and a blow to the democratic ideal of government transparency. Overclassification makes the U.S. less secure, in that it distracts intelligence agencies from protecting actual life-and-death secr... more »

Canadian PM Trudeau explains quantum computing
Last Friday, Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau visited the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo. As you know, the place employs many physicists as well as numerous "physicists" similar to Lee Smolin. Even though Trudeau was elected for his being a doll of a sort, the "physicists" at the Perimeter Institute had the opportunity to ask questions to someone who had some idea about things. So one member of the audience has exploited the opportunity (I hope that the question-and-answer wasn't staged but it could have been) and asked Trudeau to explain quantum computing. The Wolf of Wall Street and Regulatory Capture in Finance
Over the weekend my husband and I watched *The Wolf of Wall Street*. I thought the acting was excellent. The ending was of course naïve given the real world realities of Wall Street’s sustained and routine disregard for risk and externalizations of their myriad costs. Wall Street culture has been explored effectively in books, news coverage, blogs, and film. No surprises there. What is surprising to me that nothing is done to fix the problems since Wall Street effectively runs the US economy and much of the global one through its ownership of stocks and bonds and overlapping corp... more »

It is an admitted hoax with the advocates clinging to the nonsense that although there was a lot of faked footage added to clarify the situation; the point is that it was supposedly mixed with the real autopsy footage. Is it worth suing?
Sometimes things happen in life that give rise to a legal claim but are not worth pursuing. Let's suppose you bought a tin of beans from a store and when you opened the can the beans had turned rancid. The store refuses to refund your money. Technically you have a valid legal claim but if your loss was the price of a can of beans only then you would be foolish to proceed with a statement of claim. Suing over a few dollars is silly. The can of beans example is obvious but even larger cases can be financially too small or too uncertain to make a law suit worthwhile. That's largely ... more »

Origins Of Iraq’s Ethnosectarian Quota System
Iraq’s ethnosectarian quotas are a mainstay of the country’s political system. Most people blame the American Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) for institutionalizing the quotas when it put together the Iraqi Governing Council based upon sect and ethnicity, which was then duplicated in the interim government led by Iyad Allawi and every administration afterward. How did two papers on same gene with different authors, publishers, end up with identical retraction notices?
Here’s an interesting case: We’ve found two retracted papers that describe the same gene, and both have nearly identical retraction notices. What’s unusual is that the two papers don’t have any authors in common, and appeared in two different journals published by two different companies. The cause of both papers’ demise: Plagiarism, and use of unpublished data […] The post How did two papers on same gene with different authors, publishers, end up with identical retraction notices? appeared first on Retraction Watch.

Today's the day of reckoning for New York Democrats. There are no independents voting today to steer them away from making a tragic error. It's all up to New Yorkers. There is at least a reasonable possibility he did not kill Sgt. Christopher Speer at all. Under the Geneva Conventions, which govern the rules of war, soldiers who kill other soldiers in battle are not committing crimes. Otherwis... more »

Geopolitics: "Putin Orders Russian Troops To Seal Border Between Syria and Turkey"
*"Putin Orders Russian Troops To Seal Border Between Syria and Turkey"* Post by U.S. Reporter "In a shocking move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian troops inside Syria, to seal the Syrian border with Turkey. This is going to cause HUGE trouble. Turkey has been profiting by allowing oil, stolen from Syria by ISIS terrorists, to be smuggled into Turkey via convoys of oil tanker trucks. Once the tankers arrive in Turkey, the oil is slightly refined, re-packaged to look legitimate, then sold cheap on the open market. This theft and smuggling nets ISIS about $100 Mi... more »
A Decade of Military Exports to Saudi Arabia 2003-2013
Appalled at both the size of the new military contract with Saudi Arabia and the Libs ham-fisted defence of it, Canadians have been pretty focussed on those weaponized LAVs. Yet we have been supplying the Kingdom with Item 2-10 - aircraft, drones, and components "specially designed or modified for military use" - continuously since 2004 when a $900K start-up contract was followed up in 2005 with a $10M contract. Was this longterm contract also enacted as "a matter of principle" or does it fall more into the "if we don't someone else will jobsjobsjobs" category? Data collected fr... more »

The calculated cruelty of Australia’s offshore detention camps
This should surprise no-one: Australia’s offshore detention centres are intended to discourage applications for Australian refugee status. “The conditions of detention at the Manus Island Offshore Processing Centre appeared to be calculated to break the spirit of those detained in the Manus Island Offshore Procession Centre.” So says the affidavit of a Medical Doctor formerly employed there, who “was considerably distressed at what I saw, and I recall thinking that this must be similar to a concentration camp.” (Those opposed to recognising the rights of refugees should realise... more »
