When taking longer to finish is not failure but heroism
Sent to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, February 9, 2015
Like Peter Smagorinsky ("Opinion: Issue isn’t welding vs. Chaucer. It’s how
to remove barriers to college," Feb. 9). I also "admire people who persist
through obstacles." As Smagorinksy points out, many of those who take
longer than the traditional time period to finish high school, community
college, or a "four-year" college need to work to support themselves and
their families.
We must allow working students to take a reduced course load and and
occasional leaves of absence. During the depression, the father of a

Review - Ultimate Cleaning Package by Radiantly You
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) recipes are available, online, for just about
everything. And that's great for people who are into making stuff.
Making stuff isn't for everyone. So we look to commercial products to fill
our needs. In my experience, shopping for Eco-friendly products at the
market is difficult. The selections are limited, the expense is high, and
one has to be very careful about ingredients because not all so-called
green items are actually green.
I was invited to try out the *Ultimate Cleaning Package by Radiantly You*.

As the rest of Obama's lame duck presidency reaches its twilight, so

In a move that would make Mike Huckabee and any number of republican

Judge Moore, if you remember, is the infamous gay-bashing judge who, back

How To Make Your Tablet a Productive Tool
I got an iPad soon after they were first released, though I mocked it

Crockpot Ranch Chicken Enchiladas

Thankfully, crockpots can take care of much of the challenge of slow

case with the chicken in these ranch chicken enchiladas. It's a meal with
two separate preparations, but neither takes very long and the end result

Iraqi Officials Continue To Under Report Casualties
When the insurgents launched their summer offensive in June 2014 the Iraqi
authorities stopped reporting on their casualties. Huge losses were likely
incurred with no real accounting for them. Today official disclosures are
still shoddy. An improvised explosive device or a small shootout likely
results in some figures on the dead and wounded for the Iraqi Security
Forces (ISF), militias, tribes, or Kurdish forces, but there is usually
silence after major confrontations. A perfect example of this trend was
shown when the Peshmerga Ministry recently announced losses from June 2014

Odds Of Getting EEOC To File Suit For You? Not Much Better Than Odds Of Getting Struck By Lightning
EEOC has issued its 2014 Performance Report and the big news everyone

when I read the summary was that there were 88,778 charges filed

where they found cause and decided to sue on behalf of an individual or

* NCDC Breaks Their Own Record For Data Tampering In 2014*
The National Climatic Data Center has broken last year’s record for

Fiscal Irresponsibility 28: Greece's Public Debt and Populism
The most indebted, most fiscally irresponsible government in Europe, Greece
has been hugging international news recently because of its huge public
debt, and the huge bail out money given by many governments to it. This
useful chart was sent by a friend, Luz. I think she got this from The
Economist, am not sure.
Three years ago, Greece's debt/GDP ratio was already above 150 percent. No
sensible economy would dare touch that zone unless the bulk of such debt
are domestic, like Japan's.

Prince Charles says radicalisation of young people 'alarming' per BBC News (Update)
Yesterday I blogged:
'There is something alarming about this BBC report and it's that it fails

Is Prince Charles really so politically correct that he didn't say which
young people were becoming radicalised? Or did the BBC censor what he said?
Ordinarily I would suspect the BBC but in this case...'
It seems that I did Prince Charles a disservice.

Human Ancestors May Have Used Tools Half-Million Years Earlier Than Thought

Considering that tool use is observed among a wide range of animals, it is
inevitable that humanity used tools from our rawest beginnings. Way more
important is the progressive adaptation of our hands for improved tool use
and that is what we are now picking up on. That began the moment we became
bipedal. After all even bipedal lizards can use vestigal hands.
Advanced tool use took a lot longer but then it was hardly as critical. I
think fire making was a necessary first step to refinement mostly because

Ukraine Update: Battle of the Holographic Figleaf
*UPDATE: February 9, 2015 *A brief review of the headlines this morning
