MILF, Fallen 44 and Napenas, Part 5
I am reposting these three short but erudite essays by a friend, Raffy Aquino, in his fb wall. Meanwhile, my unsolicited advice to the following: PNP Director Getulio Napenas -- you apologize to the public and the families of the 44 dead cops, or you commit suicide. You bastard liar. President Aquino -- you also apologize to the public and the families of the 44 dead cops. You tolerated a suspended bureaucrat to run the show for a highly risky but ego-tripping show. That queasy feeling the weird weather can give you
In this winter which, unlike that of some other people, where whole shopping malls are collapsing in the snow, we not only have dandelions and daisies up and birds nesting, but rain that should be falling and isn't. Meteorologists talk about the California drought, but half of western Oregon is in the zone, and we're feeling it. So here I am watering the garden. There's not much out there, just three rows of broadbeans and half a bed of peas, but they need water to get started, so I have gotten out the hoses, replaced a couple of washers, connected it all together, and begun the ... more »

Hmm. Following the fairly recent blowing-in of a 'weatherbomb' and, yet more recently still, amd an outburst of 'thundersnow', it appears - as per *The Times *- that we've now facing the onslaught of a 'supertide'. Yes, a 'supertide'. I'll have to watch the waves on the shoreline of Morecambe Bay this weekend - at a safe distance. of course. The 'waterthwack' as the 'waterhorses' whack against the 'tsunamiwall' (we used to call our 'sea wall', before it seemed a bit pedestrian to do so) should be something to behold. Gluconeogenesis Drives Ketogenesis - role of the Nutritional Prometheus.
In trying to explain the findings of Newburgh and Marsh*, and of Karl Petren, from 1923 that switching to a high fat, restricted protein, and very low carbohydrate diet - a ketogenic diet - suppresses diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in diabetics without access to insulin, I can't help noticing that gluconeogenesis is a driver of ketogenesis. DKA is a dehydrating syndrome characterized by hyperglycaemia, due in large part to runaway gluconeogenesis, plus levels of ketone bodies, much higher than those seen in starvation or nutritional ketosis, which result in a lethal acidosis. And exces... more »

That said, I've tried to keep up with *Newsnight* (more of which over the weekend) and with Radio 4's *PM *and its 'Cannabis Week'. Labour vs The Militant Tendency
The past really is a foreign country. Can you imagine if the BBC or ITV ponied up to Labour Party conference and asked to transmit a live debate between Progress and the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy? It's unthinkable. At the year's party conference in Blackpool, the right won a majority on the NEC after much arm-twisting and shenanigans - some of which is outlined in John Golding's must-read, *The Hammer of the Left*. Success was described as the military effectiveness of the […]

Comment is (or isn't) free
The BBC News website opens up a tiny number of reports for (licence-fee-paying) readers to 'have their say'. The Sky News website, in contrast, (to which I've never contributed a penny), opens up every article for comment (as far as I can see). I think I can see why the BBC runs scared of allowing its readers to comment on its reports. The BBC has strong controlling tendencies. It probably couldn't cope with thread after thread after thread slipping out of its grasp. Sky seems much more relaxed. Is Vladimir Putin Worth $200 Billion
*Washington Post:* *Is Vladimir Putin hiding a $200 billion fortune? (And if so, does it matter?)* *In much of the West, the public perception of Vladimir Putin is that of a Bond villain. With his tailor-made suits, thick accent and KGB past, he seems right out of the Pierce Brosnan era.* *Of course, like all the best Bond villains, Putin needs a mysterious fortune for funding his misdeeds and building elaborate lairs. And so, you find the West fascinated by murky tales of Putin's opulent wealth.* *The latest estimate of Putin's absurd wealth comes from Bill Browder, a former f... more »

Desperate Crisis Pregnancy Clinics: Healthcare or Counselling?
These are trying times for fake abortion clinics. First, the old styling -- "crisis pregnancy centre (CPC)" -- has become so indelibly associated with lies, manipulation, and slut-shaming, they've taken to rebranding themselves as Options/Choice/Life/WhatHaveYou Centres. Then they were getting dinged by false advertising claims and lawsuits. According to an analysis by NARAL [US pro-choice organization], 79 percent of the crisis pregnancy centers that advertised on Google indicated that they provided medical services such as abortions, when, in fact, they are focused on counseling ... more »

France, Germany and Japan will be invited to formally enter the contest to build Australia’s new submarines in a process which does not rule out construction in Adelaide. But culled from the shortlist is Sweden - which designed Australia’s Collins class submarines - because it has been almost two decades since the last Swedish sub rolled off a production line. Greg Hunter, "Weekly New Wrap-Up, 2/20/15"
*"Weekly New Wrap-Up, 2/20/15"* by Greg Hunter’s USAWatchdog.com "The Obama Administration suffered a crushing defeat this week on his executive order on immigration. A federal judge ruled that basically the President did not have the power to make up his own laws outside of Congress. The immigration executive order would have given temporary legal status to 4 to 5 million illegal immigrants, allowing them tax refunds, social security numbers and other government benefits. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hansen’s decision pretty much kills this plan as the President would likely lose i...more »

Is "anti-Semitism" now fashionable in the U.S.?
*The Times of Israel* published a typically hysterical and delusional article the other day under the following ominous headline: Not a week seems to go by without an anti-Semitic attack in the United States – either verbal or violent – against Jews. *“Unfortunately anti-Semitism has become fashionable again,”* Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, executive vice president for the New York Board of Rabbis, told The Times of Israel. *“It’s not a big deal to hate the Jews.* The first group that gets attacked is the Jews.” [...] “The world is witnessing an alarming rise in acts of anti-Semitism, and ... more »

“Grand spiral galaxies often seem to get all the glory, flaunting their young, bright, blue star clusters in beautiful, symmetric spiral arms. But small galaxies form stars too, like nearby NGC 6822, also known as Barnard's Galaxy. Beyond the rich starfields in the constellation Sagittarius, NGC 6822 is a mere 1.5 million light-years away, a member of our Local Group of galaxies. *Click image for larger sizes.* About 7,000 light-years across, the dwarf irregular galaxy is seen to be filled with young blue stars and mottled with the telltale pinkish hydrogen glow of star forming regi... more »
5 Reasons Why Leftists Should Defend Russia
*February 20, 2015* (Eric Draitser - NEO) - As tensions between the US and Russia have increased in the last year, so too has the polarization of public opinion. While the western corporate media has reverted to its formerly antagonistic, Cold War era attitude toward Russia – predictably radicalizing much of western public opinion, infusing the discourse with a decidedly Russophobic bias – it has increasingly been left to those on the political margins to deconstruct the false narrative, expose the Empire’s agenda, and defend the right of sovereign nations to act independent of west... more »

"Litany Against Fear"
"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." - Frank Herbert, "Dune", "Litany Against Fear"
We Are So Fr**kg Forgiving in the US That We're Willing to Forgive Anything (Look At TBTF Banks' Dealings Now) Think Hillary Not Declaring Means Something's Up? (Not To US Fans!)
Yes, we are a most forgiving country, aren't we? (Christian virtue triumphs?) We forgave the banks and all those entitled (connected) officials who decided their "just" punishments (and benefitted personally from letting them dip into the public's money at will) and then allowed them to actually stop being bankers and just start gambling. (No loans for you!) Vegas! The new name for the US.
Review - Celadon Road Coconut Deodorant
What's in your deodorant? I prefer to put natural ingredients on my skin ... I just feel better knowing that nothing toxic enters my body. In fairness, though, I've done a bit of research on antiperspirants and deodorants. We've all heard that aluminum is linked to Alzheimer's and Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, causing cancer. Let me say that in all the research that I've done, no scientific studies have found these claims to be true. In fact, they suggest that products containing either of these ingredients are "probably" safe to use. It's that "probably" that I have a h... more »
U.S. Will Not Support Egypt In Its War Against The Islamic State In Libya
*Nancy A. Youssef, Daily Beast:* *U.S. Won’t Back Egypt’s Attacks on ISIS* *Two longtime allies are attacking ISIS—and growing frustrated with one another. That’s good news for the so-called Islamic State. The Obama administration was given multiple chances Wednesday to endorse a longtime ally’s airstrikes on America’s biggest enemy at the moment, the so-called Islamic State. Over and over again, Obama’s aides declined to back Egypt’s military operation against ISIS. It’s another sign of the growing strain between the United States and Egypt, once one of its closest friends in... more »

Newark's Top High School Students Occupy Cami Anderson's Offices
from Bob Braun: A small group of Newark high school students Tuesday night seized the office of state-appointed superintendent Cami Anderson in a protest timed to coincide with her imminent re-appointment to another year, her fifth, as head of the state’s largest school district. The action, which is continuing through the night, stands in stark contrast to the failure of Anderson’s older–and, theoretically, more powerful–critics to do anything to dislodge her from her post. The operation was executed with an efficiency that has eluded Anderson’s control of the district. The dozen... more »

Is Sheldon Adelson's Long-Term Goal To Poison The Special Relationship Between Israel And Democrats?
In 2013 the U.S. GDP-- gross national product-- was $16.99 trillion. But somehow, by spreading around some ill-gotten cash, a Vegas Mafia frontman working for red China and with loyalties primarily to Israel has managed to become one of the 3 or 4 most dominant figures in American politics. That would be Sheldon Adelson (and his wife Miriam). But if their wealth has bought them an inordinate amount of power in the U.S., imagine what it has done for them in Israel, which in 2013 had a GDP of just $259 billion. Last weekend, Israeli writer and peace activist Uri Avery tried explainin... more »

The Real Threat to Washington
A central fear of the corporate government in Washington is the 'modern silk road' that runs between China and Europe. One reason for the Ukraine war on Russia's border is the American attempt to throw a monkey wrench into the middle of this new economic zone. “The Sixth Day”; "The Pale Blue Dot"
*“The Sixth Day”* by Chet Raymo "Anthropologists pretty much agree that all modern humans had their ancestral origins in Africa, and spread from there to the other continents in a great exodus beginning about 60,000 years ago. Which is not to say that there were not already other members of the human family in Europe, Asia, and in what is now the island of Indonesia, the descendants, presumably, of earlier migrants from Africa. The origin of these pre-modern humans - Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo erectus, and Homo floresiensis - is hazy, but it now seems certain that our species (...more »

"The Status Quo: Life as We Know It"
*"The Status Quo: Life as We Know It"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "Our lives can sometimes become status quo and that is ok as long as we aren't keeping it that way on purpose. When our lives are going well, and sometimes even when they aren’t, we may find ourselves feeling very attached to the status quo of our existence- life as we know it. It is a very human tendency to resist change as though it were possible to simply decide not to do it, or have it in our lives. But change will come and the status quo will go, sooner or later, with our consent or without it. We may find a... more »
