Proposed reductions in testing: the boondoggle remains
LETTER Published in Substance http://www.substancenews.net/articles.php?page=5465§ion=Article February 26,2015 In my e-mail today I received a note from President Obama which included this statement: "We need a better education plan -- one that cuts standardized testing to a bare minimum ...". Of course I agree (see Krashen, 2008), but the proposed reduction in testing that has been submitted to congressional committees appears to be only a modest cutback from the current massive, nonstop testing program. I suspect that the plan of the US Department of Education is to reduce te... more »
This is no time to go soft on those marauding union terrorists Gov. Scott "The Lying Scumbag" Walker beat into submission
*by Ken* Let me say at the outset that I am a singularly poor predictor of those game-changing moments When Right-Wing Scumbag Liars Go Too Far. With alarming frequency one of these hell-clowns says or does something that seems to me so irretrievably blatant that even the stupidest, most blinkered followers can't help but be shaken by, and nothing happens. Contrarily, on occasions when one of them goes A Lie Too Far, it's over something that in my mind should hardly have registered a blip on the Right-Wing Scale of Outrage. Take the Katrinafication of New Orleans. Was I shocked ... more »

You were there in the beginning you heard the story, you heard the merciless and tender words telling you where you had to go. Exile is never easy and the journey itself leaves a bitter taste. But then, when you heard that voice, you had to go. You couldn't sit by the fire, you couldn't live so close to the live flame of that compassion you had to go out in the world and make it your own so you could come back with that flame in your voice, saying listen... this warmth, this u... more »

"There's a little animal in all of us and maybe that's something to celebrate. Our animal instinct is what makes us seek comfort, warmth, a pack to run with. We may feel caged, we may feel trapped, but still as humans we can find ways to feel free. We are each other's keepers, we are the guardians of our own humanity and even though there's a beast inside all of us, what sets us apart from the animals is that we can think, feel, dream and love. And against all odds, against all instinct, we evolve." - "Grey's Anatomy"

Chicago-- Historian Rick Perlstein Speaks Up For His City
History is being made in Chicago. Now, it’s close to achieving a miracle: ending Rahm Emanuel’s political career once and for all. In the first round of Chicago’s mayoral election on February 24th, Rahm Emanuel came a shocking five points shy of the 50 percent he needed to win reelection outright-- performing three points shy of the final pre-election polls. There really is little to talk about in today's paper. Nobody has asked them to make up for those days. So why has the teachers' union made such a statement. Obviously, the reporter for the story asked them. But why would a reporter ask for the union to make a response to an order nobody had given? And, since nothing has really happened, why is this a front page headline at all? Introduction to My Essay on the Failed Regime of US Radiation Protection
The government of radiation is predicated upon the idea that “low levels” of contamination produced by the nuclear-industrial-military complex pose relatively few and predictable risks to impacted human populations and ecologies. Consequently, using cost-benefit analyses of radiation risks and benefits, government agencies in nuclear nations allow routine contamination by radionuclides, although each nation sets official limits and deploys government bureaucracies to monitor and evaluate exposure levels. Decades ago, authorities from governmental regulatory agencies ... more »

The first happened this week in Arizona. Here is part of the story from Bill Moyers and Co.: On Wednesday, adjunct faculty at the University of Arizona (UA), myself included, walked out and taught-in as part of the first-ever National Adjunct Walkout Day. At least 300 of us — adjunct professors, students and tenure-tracked faculty — came out to the campus mall, deciding to dig in and call for fair wages and better working conditions for the part-time, temporary employees who make up the majority of higher education instructors. I’ve been teaching creative writing classes at UA sin... more »

The Pervasiveness of Right-Wing Garbage Culture

Too Far? Teacher Caught Displaying a "Student Terrorist List"
Anthony Freda Art Amanda Warren Last week, a St. Pete high school teacher was stuck in hot water over shaming students by placing their names on a "student terrorist list" and posting it on the door. It is unclear what was the motive for his actions. The teacher, however, went so far as to give the blacklisted students Arabic sounding alias names. While the teacher sounds like he might have a screw loose - is he in reality doing what he was trained to do? In other words, was he doing "his job" but just went one tad too far? See below for more. Notably, it doesn't appear that he... more »

Joshua Krause Last year, students from the University of Massachusetts were celebrating their annual pre-St. Patrick’s Day holiday known as “Blarney Blowout.” As you might expect, when thousands of kids gather to get drunk before spring break and St. Patrick's Day, they can get pretty rowdy. What most people didn’t expect at the time, was that the police would respond with a cadre of riot cops to disperse the crowd. A total of 73 people were arrested for disorderly conduct, violating liquor laws, and inciting a riot. However, there was one student among them who didn’t appear to ... more »

Continued Heavy Emissions from Units 1-3 (and perhaps 4)
Steam or hot gas is visibly emerging from units 1 and 2 in this cropped screenshot: That said, Unit 3 still seems to be the main source of the heaviest atmospheric emissions: Netc is showing moderately elevated radiation levels throughout Japan. US levels are not reported as higher than average, statistically, but when I looked at the RadNet charts I was appalled by new normal levels in places such as Bakersfield:

Russia’s Bear: The old-fashioned plane still thriving
The Tupolev Tu-95 first thundered over Soviet parades in the mid-1950s. Why does this giant, propeller-driven bomber still make headlines nearly 60 years later? Stephen Dowling investigates. It first rumbled into the skies back in the early 1950s, an aerial giant that epitomised Soviet military might. Even its codename – ‘Bear’ – underlined its great size and strength. When the Tupolev Tu-95 first appeared in front of Western observers in 1956, it did so amid a revolutionary surge in aviation design; the decade after the end of World War II saw jet technology become ascendant. Why the New Bomber is a Good Investment
[image: Lockheed Long Range Strategic Bomber Concept Art]Should the bomber go the way of the battleship? That is what T.X. Recalling procurement debacles like the B-2 and F-35 programs, Hammes argued that policymakers and planners should avoid the risk of another such acquisition fiasco and instead give standoff missiles and the emerging technology of autonomous drones a chance. Chinese Civilisation Older Than Thought
[image: Chinese Civilisation Older Than Thought] The key date for the global bronze Age is 2400 BC. This is when the Great pyramid appears to have been built using access to high quality copper from Lake Superior. This was sufficient to underwrite a global metal working sea connected civilization we know as the Atlantean. Yet the size and scope screams for the existence of a long prehistory that did not much depend on a metal trade and its natural currency the metal ingot. This prehistory was land based village agriculture without the threat of mobile cavalry.. That expansi... more »
Flying Manta Ray Shaped Cryptid
This is not the first such story and we actually have seen several. What has been lacking is any form of a credible explanation. At the same time on a deeper level we do not have a good explanation for the manta ray itself. Yet we now know that ordered planar Dark Matter can be used to manipulate gravity. We are actually doing it. All of a sudden the geometry of the manta ray makes real sense as it provides a kite like layer of contained dark matter that can be charged in order to provide a change in gravitational effect. By charging up a manta ray can leave water and use i... more »
