Legal aid cuts are forcing domestic abuse victims to cross-examination their attackers The justice system’s treatment of victims of domestic violence has become a politically charged issue. The Ministry of Justice says all victims are entitled to legal aid to help them “break free from abusive relationships”. But according to research by Citizens Advice, victims of domestic abuse increasingly
The spring things have sprung
You don't miss your frost till there isn't any. Coming into the last week of February, we had had all of six, maybe seven frosty mornings total, which does not bode well for tree fruits, so we were happy to see four mornings in a row with rime on the gates and crunchy grass. I had to kick the water buckets to shatter a skein of glass-like ice for the poultry -- a satisfying feeling. We're not out of the woods but anything helps. I have half a mind to rap the trunks of the trees with a stick, then drink to them with their cider and sing them a little song. *Every twig, apples big. Ev... more »
Culture Watch: Is this the end of the line for the NYC (or at least Manhattan) coffee shop?
*Because the owner of the Waverly Restaurant, at Sixth Avenue and West 4th Street, owns the building, he doesn't have to deal with an insatiable landlord.* *by Ken* Since the New York City coffee shop has been a disappearing institution for several decades, especially in Manhattan, it's hard to believe that it has reached a crisis point, but a rash of recent closings, leaving behind a lot of places hanging on for dear life, suggests that maybe this is the case. In a sense this is the same story I wrote about Thursday in connection with the tenuous future of Greenwich Village's Caf... more »
Ukraine's Economy Continues To Fall Apart
*Reuters:* *Ukraine under pressure from currency fall, gas supply threat* *KIEV/MAKIYVKA, Ukraine (Reuters) - Ukraine came under increasing economic pressure from a collapsing currency and a threat to its gas supplies from the Kremlin on Wednesday, just as a long-awaited ceasefire took hold in the east.As the truce appeared to be coming into force, the Ukrainian army reported no combat fatalities in the past 24 hours, but the news did nothing to halt a currency slump that forced the central bank to ban most trading before intervening to prop up the hryvnia.* *WNU Editor:* As the... more »

It resides in the Musee Rolin near the 12th-century Cathedral of Saint Lazare at Autun, France, of which it was once a part. The sculptor did many of the wonderful decorations of the cathedral. On the west tympanum are carved the words Gislebertus hoc fecit, "Gislebertus made this," traditionally assumed to be the sculptor's claim to authorship at a time when religious art was almost universally anonymous. U.S. Army on Russian Border
The Washington Post reported today that US military vehicles paraded 300 yards from the Russian border in Narva, Estonia. You can see the evidence in this video - if you have doubts that it is the US Army then just fast forward to about 3:20 into it and you'll see old glory waving. The soldiers from the US Army’s Second Cavalry Regiment will probably leave the military hardware in Estonia when they are finished with their "exercises". This is usually how the Pentagon prepositions military equipment for later use. Narva sits about 100km from Saint Petersburg - or about 62 miles. ... more »

The Postmodern Effacement of Class
From the mid-90s I became very interested in social theory for two reasons. In the first place, the clunky, cruddy Marxism imbibed at A-level were tools enough to help me understand the peculiarities of the social world. Was it a framework and a method appropriate to make proper sense of it? Or, indeed, had college taught me the proper stuff or instead sold me a pup that merely barked when Marxism was called? I was also very, very angry. Rather than let the SWP burn me up with pointless paper sales, I interrogated social theory and sociology for new ideas that might help change the... more »

A “target”?
It’s said that taking part in the war against IS barbarians will make New Zealanders a “target.” Because, supposedly, people are only a “target” for Islamic barbarians if the barbarians are attacked by the people’s governments. Why is Islamic State calling for their followers to launch attacks against famously neutral Switzerland? WHO IS NICHOLAS KRISTOF: An embarrassment and a hack?
*WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2015Part 3—In support of The Raleigh 43:* Where do “journalists” like Nicholas Kristof acquire their various “facts?” For those who find such questions intriguing, the former Rhodes scholar’s most recent column constitutes a fecund case study. Let’s examine a few more “facts” the pundit advanced in that piece. Questions: Do college students disproportionately describe their female professors as “nasty?” If they do, does this represent a situation in which female professors must overcome a stereotypical “unconscious bias?” Plainly, Kristof advanced both id... more »

100 Reasons Why Janet Yellen Should Be Freaking Out About ''Audit the Fed''
Michael Snyder Janet Yellen is very alarmed that some members of Congress want to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Federal Reserve for the first time since it was created. If the Fed is doing everything correctly, why should Yellen be alarmed? What does she have to hide? During testimony before Congress on Tuesday, she made “central bank independence” sound like it was the holy grail. Even though every other government function is debated politically in this country, Yellen insists that what the Federal Reserve does is “too important” to be influenced by the American peopl... more »

New Article on the Ethics, Philosophy and Practice of Person-centred Care and Shared Decision-making
One topic that's been part of my research activities for some years now is the ethical and philosophical implications of movements to transform health care practices towards more of what's often called a "patient-" or "person-centred" perspective, sharing clinical decisions with patients to a larger extent. I've been lucky to publish a few analytical works in this area in collaboration with, e.g., Lars Sandman and Daniela Cutas, which have attracted quite some attention, partly as an outcome of an ongoing research collaboration with the pediatric diabetes centre at the Sahlgrenska ... more »
America’s Militarized Police: A Growing Threat to Liberty
Ted Baumann Last summer my band played a Fourth of July gig at an outdoor festival in a well-heeled suburb of Atlanta. The lawn in front of us was filled with parents on picnic blankets and little kids running to and fro. The street was filled with noisy but well-behaved revelers, enjoying the rare legal opportunity to drink locally-brewed beer in public. Fireworks filled the dusk sky. Everyone was happy. Everyone that is, except for the company-sized contingent of heavily-armed black-clad militarized police, complete with an armored assault vehicle and automatic weapons, which ... more »
Biochemistry Science versus the Pharmaceutical-Medical Paradigm
Catherine J. Frompovich What is biochemistry? According to the *Medical Dictionary at The Free Dictionary by Farlex*, it is 1. The *study of the chemical substances AND vital processes occurring in living organisms.* [CJF emphasis added] 2. The chemical composition of a particular living system or biological substance. [1] That definition defines, *in this writer’s opinion*, only half of what the pharmaceutical-vaccine-medical paradigm not only considers, i.e., study of chemical substances, *but *apparently ignores: chemical physiological impacts that occur in livi... more »
Lebanon’s Hezbollah Acknowledges Its Presence In Iraq
Lebanese Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah recently acknowledged that his group was involved in the war in Iraq. This came as no surprise as Hezbollah advisers were said to be in Iraq soon after Mosul fell, and in July one of its commanders died in the country. Just like Hezbollah’s previous time in Iraq during the U.S. occupation it is working as an adjunct for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In a speech on February 16, 2015 Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah admitted that his organization was active in Iraq. He said that it only had a “limited presence” in the ... more »
More Weapons for US-NATO Proxy War in Ukraine
Defense News reports: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced a deal for unspecified military and technical cooperation with the UAE on Tuesday, and said negotiations are ongoing with the United States and unspecified European nations. The deal is a sign that Ukraine is not only seeking, but finding defense industry partners outside the region as it wages an uphill fight against Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. Poroshenko told reporters at the IDEX show here that he hoped talks with the US would yield an agreement to help Ukraine defend itself. Poroshenko ha... more »
14 Signs That Most Americans Are Flat Broke And Totally Unprepared For The Coming Economic Crisis
Michael Snyder When the coming economic crisis strikes, more than half the country is going to be financially wiped out within weeks. At this point, more than 60 percent of all Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and a whopping 24 percent of the country has more credit card debt than emergency savings. One of the primary principles that any of these “financial experts” that you see on television will teach you is to have a cushion to fall back on. Exposure to Falling Oil Prices Driving Global Defaults and Slowdown
Mac Slavo On the surface, the United States is currently one of the stronger global economies. But lurking beneath that may be an ‘impending crisis’ that threatens to drag everyone down with it. That’s according to the *Financial Times*, who say that falling oil prices combined with a strong dollar (hence reduced trade in exports) and a likely increase in U.S. interest rates could contribute to the “familiar pattern” of economic slowdown. As Satyajit Das writes, “bankruptcies, defaults, banking problems and reduction in credit availability drive contagion.” Weak growth, high deb... more »

Paradise Stolen - The Myth of Efficiency
Part 1 of this series was a warning to children about a world that was stolen from them. It offered a stark condemnation to adults who continue to ignore the reality of the wicked ways in which government has used their money, both donated and extorted. Part 2, below, suggests that the innate practicality of small, sustainable communities is a solution to the massive mismanagement by a government dedicated solely to a megacorporate/banker/war economy. Turkey's Invasion Of Syria Shows Turkish Connection To ISIS; NATO Agenda
Brandon Turbeville Turkey has now officially proven that Israel and the United States are not the only nations that can brazenly violate the sovereignty of other countries, Syria in particular, without fear of reprisal due to NATO support and a blatant culture of aggression. The Turkish invasion of Syrian soil on February 22 under the guise of protecting and securing the tomb of Sulayman Shah is case in point. The tomb is largely recognized as a Turkish exclave since the early 1920s when, in 1921, it was agreed in the Treaty of Ankara that the Turks would be allowed to raise the ... more »

The Gerrymandering Of Aaron Schock Into A Permanent Seat
In 2010, Illinois Democrats found themselves in complete control of the state government again. Time to gerrymander the state? It certainly worked out well for Republican Aaron Schock. China's Submarine Hunting Plane Has A Giant Stinger
[image: Y-8Q MAD]China is making serious efforts to correct its longstanding deficiency in aerial Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), introducing the Shaanxi Y-8Q (also designated as the Y-8GX6) aircraft painted in the blue-gray People's Liberation Army Navy Air Force (PLANAF) colors into operation. Previously, two Y-8Q prototypes had been flying for the past several years as part of a rigorous testing and training regimen. Until this month, China's only long-range aerial ASW capability came from three Harbin SH-5 seaplanes, which are nearly thirty years old. The Y-8Q is designed to ove... more »

Black Beans Lower Blood Pressure
[image: (diogoppr/iStock/Thinkstock)] Feijoada, Brazilian traditional meal. (diogoppr/iStock/Thinkstock) This item describes research that clearly links the key proteins in beans that enhance health. Everyone sort of knew something was going on but this defines what is going on. Brazil's black bean and rice staple looks better every which way. We are slowly sorting out which foods promote excellent health. Now if we could organize a grading system and test protocols that allow successful portion management that can be trusted. Herbs and Spices That Can Help Regulate Your Blood Sugar
Cinnamon seems the easiest to include in your daily protocol. I like to blend a teaspoon of cocoa powder, a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon powder and a scant teaspoon of honey. The Aztec added powdered red pepper but i have not had the nerve to try that yet. My father drank fenugreek tea to help his angina and he thought it did some good. I think that the leaves make a good addition for salads and other dishes. All good. Most of us who are into the last third of our normal lifespan have blood sugar issues that may well be below thresholds considered dangerous but still chewi... more »
Europa Is the Prize for Exploration
Now that we know how to tap Dark Matter for unlimited energy, getting to Europa will be not difficult at all. This is even before we master gravity manipulation All it takes a poweful mass driver that accelerates mass to an appreciable fraction of the speed of light or even a lot less. What we want is a steady one g of acceleration to get there. We can even send tankers full of water while we do this to be on the safe side. We know we can build a super conducting mass driver and now power it continuously. We can then produce a plasma gas from water and fire it through the dr... more »
Russia to build Barguzin rail-mobile missile systems
[image: BZHRK 15P961 ''Molodets'']Russia's new rail-mobile missile system will be called "Barguzin." The new system will expand the line of existing missile systems of Russia and strengthen the defensive capability of our country. Missiles for the Barguzin complex will be built on the basis of the Yars ICBM. First rail-mobile missile systems It is hard to say, whose idea it was originally to put an artillery gun on a railway platform. However, it is well known that such weapons were used in the years of the American Civil War in 1861-1865. Later, the British used armored trains i... more »
Black hole microstates from gluing an exterior with its delayed twin
*...and a proof of state-dependence of interior field operators...* Kyriakos Papadodimas (CERN) and Suvrat Raju (Tata) have released a five-page paper that is full of hot ambitious ideas as well as cool, almost rock-solid arguments about the "holographic code" describing the black hole interior: Local Operators in the Eternal Black Hole They work with the eternal Schwarzschild black hole in the \(AdS_{d+1}\) space. They describe it using the tortoise coordinate, one that I and Andy Neitzke learned to love when we studied the quasinormal modes. This coordinate makes the \(rt\)-plane... more »

Gulf Oil Cash Has Been Funding Terrorists All Along (Liberal Media? I had a report on the totally unexpected intellectualization of the Oscars, and the shutout of the psychos (Hi, Kyle fans!), mostly written before I saw this latest bit of documentation on the funding of the "terrorists" by the oil interests, and the convenient (not really) invention of (and support for) ISIS/L (also known as a bunch of people really angry about all the previous western

Corruption Is Still Pervasive In Ukraine
Leonid Bershidsky, Bloomberg: *Ukraine's Tarnished Poster Child for Reform* *Less than a year ago, Igor Bilous was a symbol of hope and change for Ukraine. The 36-year-old investment banker's appointment to lead the country's tax service seemed to confirm that the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych's corrupt regime would mark a generational shift and a radical cleanup of the Ukrainian state. Today, however, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk suspended Bilous and two of his key deputies pending a corruption investigation.Bilous's fall bodes poorly for the stability of the curr... more »
“Turning to social liberalism, the issue I would suggest ACT focuses on is voluntary euthanasia.”
David Farrar was asked to talk to last weekend’s ACT conference on how ACT might gain more voters to increase their representation in parliament and decrease their reliance on the Epsom electorate? Mark Hubbard will be pleased… …I think a clear message of opposition to most forms of corporate welfare has potential appeal to not just economic liberals on the right, but also to many on the left. It would make it hard for the left to paint ACT as the party of big business, if they are signing up to your campaigns against corporate welfare. Turning to social liberalism, the issue I ... more »

Chet Raymo, "Nullius In Verba"
*"Nullius In Verba"* by Chet Raymo "Britain's Royal Society, established in 1660, was the first formal scientific association. It's early membership included such luminaries as Robert Hooke, Christopher Wren, Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton. They took as their motto Nullius in verba, which can be translated roughly as "Take no one's word for it." And thus ended, in that gathering at least, a millennium-and-a-half of a European intellectual tradition based on quoting authorities as proofs of arguments. It always helped, of course, to have Aristotle on your side. Or Augustine. Or Aquin... more »
