Occupy Hong Kong, Take Two
*February 4, 2015* (Ulson Gunnar - NEO) Were Hong Kong's street demonstrations a movie, the director's chair would certainly be placed in Washington D.C. Several independent researchers have exposed the shockingly large number of direct links between funding and political backing from Washington and nearly every prominent leader organizing street demonstrations in Hong Kong. The yellow umbrellas winding through Hong Kong's streets, whose numbers are inflated by American and British media's expert use of tight angles and close ups, could be considered "take two." Good News! 5th Circuit Rejects AG Caldwell's Request for En Banc Hearing --Early Birthday Present for Albert
Today the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the unanimous decision of their own three judge panel and denied Attorney General Buddy Caldwell's request for an "en banc" rehearing of Albert's case. This was the State's last shot to reinstate Albert's third overturned conviction through the US Court of Appeals. Though we expect they may continue to delay justice with a vain attempt to convince the US Supreme Court to undo decades of solidly established Constitutional law, Judge Brady's original February 2013 decision throwing out Albert's murder conviction stands stronger tha... more »

Joint submissions entitled to careful consideration and not to be rejected unless unfit or unreasonable
R v Gibson, 2015 ABCA 4: [9] The sentencing judge remained unconvinced, being of the view that Gibson's driving was far more dangerous and blameworthy than that in the case law presented to him. He determined that a two-year sentence would therefore fail to meet the principle of proportionality, and on that basis rejected the joint submission. In so concluding, he was mindful that "judges should not interfere with joint submissions unless the sentence being proposed is unfit or unreasonable" (AR 79/33-34). The Mega Brothel and Legalising Prostitution
What to do about prostitution? To all intents and purposes it remains banned in England and Wales, though an individual sex worker can work out of a property at any one time. More than one and they fall foul of prohibitions against brothel keeping. The situation in Scotland is slightly different as the campaign to make the purchasers of sex criminally liable has made headway but not made it into law, whereas in Northern Ireland such an offence comes into force from June this year. Despite the raft of laws and sanction against it, sex work counted for £5.3bn in 2013 (and contributed... more »

Quantum Relativity and Why It's Important
By SCG The bridge between quantum physics and general relativity requires a paradigm shift in order for scientists to connect the dots. In fact, it is a profound statement that says more than volumes of philosophy. But first, a bit of background. From the dawn of time, people have resisted saying "I don't know." A strange symmetry
Veteran BBC reporter Hugh Sykes (he's been with them for over 40 years), engaging on Twitter with *Biased BBC'*s DB back in 2013, said I am scrupulously objective when reporting - unlike some of my Tweets! I obey: "Hang up your opinions with your coat" In other words, yes, maybe he's a bit dodgy, impartiality-wise, on Twitter but when broadcasting on Radio 4 he strives for (and achieves?) true BBC objectivity. Thus, his repeated Twitter digs at, say, UKIP and Tory immigration policy are something you won't (however hard you try) hear reflected in his broadcast reports. **** Hu... more »

To Resurrect a Mockingbird
(By *American Zen*'s Mike Flannigan. on loan from Ari.) After a 55 year-long silence, Harper Lee is publishing a sequel to her classic *To Kill a Mockingbird*. From just a purely literary viewpoint, this is huge news. Imagine a new J.D. Salinger novel coming to light about Holden Caulfield 20 years later. That's essentially the premise for Lee's "new" novel, *Go Set a Watchman*. I say "new" in quotes because, according to Miss Lee's account, *Watchman *was written first and the flashback chapters about Scout Finch's childhood so captivated Lee's editor that he asked her to expa... more »

The 6 Grand Illusions That Keep Us Enslaved to the Matrix
Sigmund Fraud For a magician to fool his audience his deceit must go unseen, and to this end he crafts an illusion to avert attention from reality. While the audience is entranced, the deceptive act is committed, and for the fool, reality then becomes inexplicably built upon on a lie. That is, until the fool wakes up and recognizes the truth in the fact that he has been duped. Maintaining the suspension of disbelief in the illusion, however, is often more comforting than acknowledging the magician’s secrets. We live in a world of illusion. So many of the concerns that occupy the ... more »

Graham Noakes, 41, said he was astonished when staff at the fast food chain's outlet in St George's retail park refused to give him a hand-wipe because it was against its Halal policy.' Controls failure caused F-16 crash
[image: F-16 crash Albacete]A controls failure was behind the crash of a Greek F-16 fighter jet that killed 11 and injured 20 at a Spanish airbase last Monday, according to first investigations. An engine failure alone could not have been enough to cause the tragedy at Los Llanos base in Albacete, which operates as a NATO training center to improve joint air operations. Sources familiar with the investigation said that even if the aircraft’s single engine malfunctioned on takeoff, the F-16 should have normally continued in a straight line and the pilots would have been able to contr... more »

Ancient Aboriginal Stories Preserve History of a Rise in Sea Level
When i started this blog, no one was really connecting the dots on the total impact on the sea level produced by the end of the Northern Ice Age in 12900 BP. Yet this tells us that they have all now woken up and they are now looking for cultural evidence which is great. The only caution i would add is that the actual rise was fast enough but did have at least one serious surge caused by Lake Agassiz. Our risk is that we may still have remnant ice to remove out there that we would not wish to lose. Yet global reforestation will end all that soon enough. That will brin... more »

AN INDONESIAN FIRING SQUAD: AUSTRALIA'S PROXY EXECUTIONERS
The execution of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran is imminent and, as the Indonesian ambassador to Australia Nadjib Kesoema has said, ‘the situation was final’ and there was ‘nothing Australia could do to save Chan and Sukumaran from the firing squad’. The reality, however, is that there was never any intention of Australia doing anything to save them from a firing squad in the first place. Right from the very moment the Bali Nine set foot on the aircraft in Australia that took them to Bali they were doomed. If the Australian government wanted to save them from the firing squad then... more »
Totally like 'TFTD'
The one downside with scrapping 'Thought for the Day' would be that the Twitter feed TFTDAbridged would also have to stop. Its mission statement reads: Every day the BBC's flagship news programme Today is interrupted by a couple of minutes of religious moralising. I can get it down to 140 characters or less. Here's a recent sample: 28/01/2015 - Rev Dr Giles Fraser *Greece's debts should be written off. Jesus says so.* 26/01/2015 - Rev Dr Jane Leach *I went for a walk but felt bad about it because I didn't connect with the community. Walks are only good with other people. * 21/01... more »
Happy Rand’s Day
Oops. I forgot to mark Rand’s Day yesterday – Ayn Rand’s birthday on Feb 2nd. But since Americans are a day behind anyway, here’s one of my favourite Rand quotes… [image: “Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it's yours.”] [Pic shows acrylic sculpture by artist Michael Wilkinson, hat tip Linda... more »
Why Should The Pentagon Be Concerned That Israeli PM Netanyahu Is Giving A Speech In Congress?
Barack Obama with Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office. Photo: Pete Souza. *Mark Perry, Al Jazeera:* *Netanyahu’s Congress invitation raises eyebrows among some US generals* *Analysis: Top brass who have questioned Obama’s strategies don't want a foreign leader influencing US decision-making* *WNU Editor*: Israeli PM Netanyahu is not the first foreign leader to arrive in the U.S. to influence opinions and policies .... nor will he be the last. But when I read this article I said to myself that the U.S. is now dropping all pretext on being neutral on the upcoming Israeli election ... more »
Drivel of the Day Watch
Iain Martin, editor of a fine new website called CAPX (better known, so far, as a *Telegraph *writer*), *has launched a campaign to get rid of 'Thought for the Day', describing it as "the home [for] bad ideas". His campaign began last week with a piece called Scrap the BBC’s Thought For The Day now, which begins: Apologies if you are reading this abroad or if Thought For The Day on BBC Radio 4 means nothing to you. You’re lucky and I’m jealous because I wish I had never heard of Thought For The Day either. But as I live in the UK, and because I’m a fan of Radio 4, which is Britain... more »
Three-Person Babies and the Church
This story caught my eye as I was preparing to teach earlier today. The science behind three-person babies is exciting and interesting, and holds the promise of banishing mitochondrial disease to the medical history books. The science, which I don't properly understand as I spent GCSE science tippexing natty doodles on my biology folder, involves removing mitochondria from an egg and replacing it with that from another donor before it is fertilised. Any babies born from this technique effectively have genetic material from three people. You can understand why the Church of England ... more »
Rudd Schedules "Open" Faculty Meetings on Relay's "Urban Specific" Takeover at 8 AM
At the insistence of University of Memphis faculty members, David Rudd agreed last week to a meeting with university faculty and other concerned citizens at 5 PM February 3. He also agreed to schedule another meeting at a later date. Today this email was sent to Faculty Senate members, rather than to the entire faculty: In the spirit of transparency, the President and Provost of the University are hosting an open forum to discuss the partnership agreement between the University of Memphis and Shelby County Schools. The forum will be held in the University Center, River Room (300...more »
