So, did you catch Jeb Bush's foreign policy speech in Chicago the other day? You didn't? Then you missed a rare tragicomic treat, a slapstick spinoff of *Six Feet Under *starring the dysfunctional Bush clan as the funeral home ghouls, and all the rest of us as their hapless clients. Jeb Bush as president would put the toe tag on America for its final trip to the morgue. He'd skip the autopsy because in his world, no post-mortem is necessary. The Iraq and Afghanistan operations were a success even though millions of patients died. To make the preview of his candidacy even more macabr... more »

This post is the most important of any I’ve ever re-posted, so I will not supersede it for a significant length of time. It summarizes over a year of Washington’s meddling with Ukraine, which I have garnered mainly from Paul Craig Roberts (who has been unusually silent for the past 9 days; I sure hope nothing has happened to him). It is the neocons in the U.S. government who are trying to provoke a nuclear war with Russia …which they plan to survive in huge underground bunkers they have had built in various locations around the country. Whether or not they get their way now depends in large measure on how many Americans (and Europeans) understand what they are up to, and some of them pass the story on to patriots in positions where they may stymie the neocons’ plans. The article below succinctly and accurately describes the situation as it presently stands. Please spread it around.

In fairness (and to properly balance out my moaning)... Though the initial report conspicuously avoided noting the polling evidence showing that Anglicans are significantly more right-leaning than their leadership (politically-speaking) and rather implying (via the weighting of its contributors) that religious believers lean leftwards, this morning's *Sunday **did* provide its listeners with a wholly (and holy) engaging discussion on 'religion and politics' between likable Labour MP Stephen Timms (well, I like him anyway - so if he's said something untoward about something, tough!)... more »

walmart increases wages: workers united are winning, and the struggle must continue

Workers in the US have won a significant victory in their struggle for dignity and a living wage. This week Walmart announced that within one year, all current Walmart employees will be paid at least $10/hour, and that newly-hired workers will start at $9.00/hour, with a real opportunity to earn $10/hour with six months. While still far below a basic living wage of $15/hour, the increase does represent a recognizable improvement over the poverty-level $7.25/hour (the US federal minimum wage) that most Walmart workers now earn. And because Walmart is the largest private employer in ... more »

I do! Talking about the authors at *Biased BBC,* the blog's editor, David Vance, was on this morning's *The Big Questions. * The opening 'big question' was a very BBC question: "Is it always better to talk to terrorists?" Here's how Nicky Campbell framed the question (in a decidedly one-sided fashion): Yesterday's terrorists often turn into tomorrow's statesmen. But in the half a century I have been tuning in, The Archers has always portrayed an absurd alternative universe bearing little or no resemblance to the actual English countryside. Sometimes an editor or script-writer on radio’s longest soap opera gets carrie... more »
