Not a successful VIP transport
The Mexican Navy and its Marines operate a number of Russian-built Mil Mi-17 helicopters to support its anti-narcotics missions. One of them was tasked last week to survey hurricane damage in the state of Veracruz. Its passengers included the Veracruz Minister of the Interior. However, its takeoff from the town of Agua Blanca was less than successful. Looks like the tail rotor wasn't operating correctly. Fortunately, it still had enough function for the pilots to land (sort of); but I suspect it won't be taking off again. Those on board the helicopter can't have been ver... read more

Superfood Popular Among Surfers Eradicates Cancer Cells While Reducing Blood Sugar and Cholesterol in Overweight Adults
For most people, the consumption of berries is limited to only a few different types, and they are almost never organic. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries (in that order) are the three most popular types in the U.S., but they’re almost never organic and are often heavily sprayed with chemicals, including strawberries which ranked #1 on the 2018 ‘Dirty Dozen’ list by the Environmental Working Group. While these berries are still relatively beneficial in comparison to other popular foods that make up the “Standard American Diet,” they’re still a far cry from being truly healt... read more

Why Hezbollah Is Bringing Iranian Fuel To Lebanon
The chokehold on Lebanon has grown even tighter, thanks to the embargo imposed against it by the United States and its Arab allies in the Persian Gulf. This comes at the lowest point of Lebanon’s two-year-old economic crisis, a catastrophe the World Bank calls the worst the world has seen since 1850. The country’s sudden-but-deliberate fuel shortage, vital to essential daily activity and life-saving medical services, has accelerated this alarm. Today, bread is in shortage and hospitals are sending out distress calls, civilians are camping in front of petrol stations, and water has... read more

Security In Iraq Aug 22-28, 2021
The Islamic State’s summer offensive in Iraq officially ended in August. At the same time pro-Iran groups are picking up their attacks during that same period. There were a total of 21 security incidents recorded in Iraq from August 22-28. That was down from 25 the week before, 31 the second week of the month and 44 the first. The steady decline is because the Islamic State winded down its summer offensive during the month. 9 of those incidents were by pro-Iran groups. They carried out attacks across central and southern Iraq and an assault on Kuwait. Logistics co... read more
Biden's Two Foreign Policy Doctrines Are Riddled With Contradictions
*Dan Negrea* *Foreign Policy, * There seem to be two Biden doctrines, neither is compelling, and they are at cross-purposes at times. Neither is the political clarion call America needs for the great power confrontation with China. Analysts parse the foreign policy statements of presidents and administrations in search of a dominant theme. When they find it, they call it a presidential doctrine. The Monroe, Truman, Nixon, and Reagan doctrines, for example, are enduring summaries of those presidents’ foreign policy. There seem to be two Biden doctrines, neither is compelling, ... read more

*Sebastien Roblin* *Chinese Submarines, * The Chinese government is not disposed to transparency regarding its military accidents. *Here's What You Need to Remember:* Only high standards of maintenance, manufacturing, and crew training can avert lethal peacetime disasters—standards which are difficult for many nations to afford, but which the PLA Navy likely aspires to it as it continues to expand and professionalize its forces at an extraordinary rate. Afghanistan Withdrawal: Red Cross Commits to Remaining Behind
*Trevor Filseth* *Afghanistan, * The Red Cross also served in Afghanistan under the Taliban in the 1990s, and its staff has asserted that the group has a “very good working relationship” with the Taliban. As the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan at the Kabul airport continues, U.S. are forces madly attempting to meet an August 31 “red line” date imposed by the Taliban. Greenwashing, Subsidies And Carbon Pricing
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is favoured by the fossil fuel industry as it offers the opportunity to continue business-as-usual, while appearing to be green and gaining credits on a carbon price with the support of foraminous government subsidies. Climate change update: Is it time yet to have a real talk about this?
Claims that 'We are going to rebuild stronger than ever' in Louisiana are just way off the mark. Why rebuild on barrier islands that are getting pounded in the worst way with each successive hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico? Why not bury powerlines under the ground so that each time we have a hurricane or an ice-storm (in the north) we don't have a power shut down for weeks at a time? Can we begin to understand that switching to electric vehicles is not a real solution? Where do you get the electricity to charge cars? The very real danger of catching COVID-19 when abroad
For all that I'm profoundly skeptical about the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, I'm nevertheless in no doubt about the danger of the disease if it gets hold of you. Fortunately, despite belonging to several of the higher-risk groups that are threatened by it, I was able to treat it locally both times, and did not have to be admitted to hospital. Generating Insanity
Paul Krugman writes that there's an interesting connection between right-wing politics and the peddlers of snake oil: Right-wing extremists, and to some extent even more mainstream conservative media, rely on financial support from companies selling nutritional supplements and miracle cures — and that financial support is arguably a significant factor pushing the right to become more extreme. Indeed, right-wing extremism isn’t just an ideological movement that happens to get a lot of money from sellers of snake oil; some of its extremism can probably be seen not as a reflection of... read more

Should be no harm in having an open discussion.....
Over a hundred doctors and health professionals have signed an open letter to the UK Prime Minister calling for an "open and proper scientific debate" about the pandemic policy arguing covid restrictions are based on flawed assumptions. Growing protest throughout Europe and general fear and mistrust in other places about the official covid story and 'early treatment plans' (or lack there of) makes it quite apparent that some forces in our societies are 'reluctant' to have an open public discussion and debate. Suppose we fully deregulated the housing market. What would happen?
