Improving soil carbon measurements empowers African farmersThis is clearly useful.. It detects organicly bound carbon. Detecting elemental carbon is as easy as a water shaker test. At the same time, such a test also sorts out obvious organics as well as they are simply lighter than sand and clay.. My point is that you can get a good sense of carbon content using the water shaker test. This device may provide higher resolution. Long term, we do need to introduce elemental carbon in the form of biochar into all our soils simply to capture available free ions. We are ultimately looking to create a five percent content. Inasmuch as we... read more

The Beatles’ 8 Pioneering Innovations: A Video Essay Exploring How the Fab Four Changed Pop MusicYes, i was a teenage fan of the beatles. It soon became the residence floor favorite. I still have that well worn album. I later bought another copy to retain as a collectable. Finding the fertilizer “sweet spot”:More and more I do believe we all need to focus on using biochar directly with all our fertilizer applications. The Biochar is readily produced by converting wood chips in a simple barrel iln on site. Turns out mach easier than thought. The biochar can then be run through a small rotory crusher you can make yourself using a fine screen to separate out a usable flowable product that integrates with fertilizer. It can also be directly saturated with ammonia to integrate nitrogen into the char. The carbon acts to attract free ions and lower nutrient losses to ground water. Doing... read more

Hunger for tomatoes turns Canada into greenhouse superpowerWhile we are on greenhouses, it is booming industry in Ontario in particular. This is a good article on the tomato industry. Now you know why the supermarkets never run out of tomatos.. No one has yet discovered how to get a vine ripened field tomato to the customer and retain its fresh picked flavor. Worse, we have not discovered how to do it with a greenhouse either. The flavor literally evaporates away. however shipped field tomatos still are better in taste.
