A soldier admires the Afghanistan landscape. (The U.S. Army, https://flic.kr/p/aZzGU8; CC BY 2.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/) Over the past 48 hours, the unthinkable has become a reality in Afghanistan: the democratic government supported by the United States and its allies for the past two decades has collapsed and Taliban forces have claimed control of the country. Perhaps you have to live in a place that has had no law for a long time—since the Soviets invaded 31 years ago—before you welcome bad law as an improvement.
