The World Health Organization and Its Brand of COVID-19 Propaganda
This graphic recently appeared on the World Health Organization's Facebook page: Apparently, Mother Nature who, in her wisdom, endowed all of humanity with an innate ability to fight off infections of many types, did not see far enough into the future to provide human beings with the ability to fight off COVID-19. Given that Phase 3 trials will continue into late 2022 at the earliest, it's pretty amazing how the World Health Organization has already determined that the current crop of experimental COVID-19 vaccines are even better at protecting humanity from this dreaded dise... read more

What Andrew Cuomo’s Resignation Reveals About the State of American Democracy
Andrew M. Cuomo announcing a plan to modernize and transform the MTA, Jan. 8, 2016 (MTA New York City Transit/Marc A. Hermann/https://flic.kr/p/CoRL8a/CC BY 2.0/https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/) On the surface, the fall of Andrew Cuomo is a story about the continuing reverberations of the #MeToo movement, of a politician whose long history of sexual misconduct finally caught up with him. And this is certainly a big part of the story. But Cuomo’s resignation—spurred by his complete abandonment by New York and national Democratic elites and the prospect of impeachment a... read more

Kabul [UPDATED]
*CIA officer helps evacuees up a ladder onto US helicopter in Saigon, 29 April 1975.* *[Pic by Hubert Van Es, Wikipedia]* It's looking like Saigon in 1975 all over again, isn't it. There was no good time to pull out of Afghanistan. We can probably all agree on that. But it is possible to question *how* the pull-out was done -- starting with the 'peace talks' with the Taliban (peace! with the Taliban!) that delivered to those butchers the US's timetable of withdrawal, and right up to the advice from the world's most expensive 'intelligence' agencies that the government, the army ... read more
Afghanistan's Shadow
You will have seen the appalling footage. Dozens of Afghans swarming around an American military transport as it taxis down the runway. Some cling to the fuselage, desperately hoping the mass of humanity swarming about its wheels and grabbing at its wings would make it stop. It did not stop. Later shots showed the transport after take off, with the tiny specks of a couple of people falling from it to their deaths. This extraordinary sequence condenses everything about the West's military occupation of Afghanistan into a short social media clip - its indifference to the people our g... read more

U.S. Should Prove it Has No Hostile Intent Toward Pyongyang
*Doug Bandow* *Korean Security, * Instead of responding to threats from Pyongyang, the Biden administration should look beyond and propose actions to counteract claims of American antagonism. After a relative calm period of U.S.-North Korea relations, the rhetoric again is flying. Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, denounced “the ever-increasingly hateful U.S military threats.” The North would act, she said: “We are spurred to further strengthen our national defense and strong preemptive strike abilities to swiftly respond to any military action that is aimed at us.” Then the U... read more

Joe Biden Could Have Saved Afghanistan

Rapid Taliban Takeover Shows How Little US Understood Afghanistan
No doubt many Afghans fear a resumption of Taliban rule after two decades, with its draconian rules against music, the cinema and girls going to school. But there is a reason why the Afghan military dissolved before the advancing Taliban, putting up no resistance whatsoever, despite Washington banking on them holding out for at least a month: the Taliban may be rotten but they are Afghans. *Ethen Kim Lieser* *economy, Americas* There could be many reasons why one has yet to receive their child tax credit payment. First and foremost, it is entirely possible that the IRS tried to direct deposit the cash into a closed or inactive bank account. The Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department on Friday confirmed that the second batch of advance monthly payments from the expanded child tax credits was issued to approximately thirty-six million American families. China Is Bloodlessly Dominating the South Pacific
*Christopher Cottle* *China, Asia-Pacific* Attempts by China to expand its influence are not new, but the past three years have shown a doubling of its efforts. More nations are aligning with China at an increasing rate. The next great military threat to the United States could be brewing on a chain of islands that’s so small it doesn't appear on most world maps. Most people have never heard of islands like Kiribati, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. That could be because the United States has ignored the South Pacific for too long, and its neglect is pushing the inhabitants towards China. ... read more

Why Sanctioning Pakistan Wouldn’t Have Saved Afghanistan
*Rupert Stone* *Pakistan, Afghanistan, * Maybe the United States could have had better luck strong-arming Islamabad in the early years of the Afghan war, when the Taliban was still heavily dependent on Pakistani sanctuary, financial largesse, and military advice. But that ship sailed long ago. As the Taliban rampaged through Afghanistan last week, seizing one provincial capital after another, irate Afghans took to Twitter to protest Pakistan’s support for the militant group. Spearheaded by Canada’s former ambassador in Kabul, Chris Alexander, the hashtag #SanctionPakistan became ... read more

Citrus Canker Returns To Texas, This Time With An Asian Strain
Citrus canker, caused by the bacterium *Xanthomonas citri,* was first identified in the United States near the Florida-Georgia border in 1910 and then raged across southern states. It was considered eradicated in 1933, thanks to chemical intervention, but in 1995 it was found again in Miami-Dade County, Florida. This time, Florida found it impossible to eliminate and worked on containment. It moved to Louisiana in 2014 and 2016, USDA confirmed the presence of the Asiatic A strain, a more severe form of citrus canker, on two sour orange trees in Houston. read more read more

The 25-Million Year Gap Between The 'Molecular Clock' And The Fossil Record Gets A Little Smaller
Microfossils found in rock samples retrieved in Australia more than 60 years ago (DOI 10.1126/science.abj2927) fill an approximately 25-million-year gap in knowledge by reconciling the molecular clock - or pace of evolution - with the fossil spore record - the physical evidence of early plant life gathered by scientists over the years. This reconciliation supports an evolutionary-developmental model connecting plant origins to freshwater green algae, or charophyte algae. The “evo-devo” model posits a more nuanced understanding of plant evolution over time, from simple cell division ... read more
Should Vaccinated People Be Worried About “Breakthrough Infections?”
*Trevor Filseth* *Coronavirus, * Because the vaccination gives one a 99.999 percent chance of survival against the Delta variant, anyone who receives a vaccine should be relatively assured that they are safe. Around the United States, many jurisdictions that lifted their coronavirus lockdowns in the spring, following an initially successful vaccination drive, have now re-implemented them. I've been waiting for this: more and more US manufacturers are starting to "re-shore"
I pointed out some years ago that when shipping and logistics costs were low, it made sense for US manufacturers to "off-shore" their manufacturing to countries with low labor and input costs, because the expense of shipping them to the USA was less than paying US wages and input costs. However, if those logistics costs grew, it would make offshore manufacture much less attractive. Well, as we've seen, the cost of shipping goods from the Far East to the USA has exploded; so now manufacturers are actively "re-shoring" their facilities and production.
