Reflections On Events In Afghanistan (VIII)
8. US senses that Taliban is reality – Implications This week will stand out as a pivotal moment in President Joe Biden’s presidency. It has been a humble moment yet bold and decisive, far-sighted but tactical, and focused on America’s self-interests. It underscores that the US’ capacity to force its […] read more

* China set to begin first trials of molten salt nuclear reactor using thorium instead of uranium* Scientists in China are about to turn on for the first time an experimental reactor that's believed by some to be the Holy Grail of nuclear energy — safer, cheaper and with less potential for weaponisation. Construction on the thorium-based molten salt reactor was expected to be finished this month with the first tests to begin as early as September, according to a statement from the Gansu provincial government. Thorium is a metallic element with radioactive properties, close to uran... read more

Untold Casualties: Why "Limited" Nuclear Conflict Is a Dangerous Premise
*David Axe* *Nuclear War, * Only a fool would think it possible. *Here's What You Need to Know*: The Reagan administration gazed upon the simulated horrors of simulated nuclear war and made an effort to change its policies in order to minimize the chance of any atomic exchange. A “small” nuclear war would kill or injure more than 90 million people within just a few hours. That’s the startling conclusion that a team of researchers at Princeton University reached when they simulated an exchange of small-yield “tactical” nuclear weapons between the United States and Russia. The Army Could Be Better Off Without Hypersonic Missiles
*Michael Peck* *U.S. Army, * Spoehr, a retired Army lieutenant general who heads the Center for National Defense at the Heritage Foundation, warns against the frenzy for superweapons. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *Given the relentless “if they have them, so must we” dynamics of arms races, it is that hypersonic weapons will be developed by multiple nations. But there is nothing magical about hypersonic missiles. They are missiles that merely travel faster than older missiles. And like any weapon, hypersonic missiles must have a purpose and mission other than merely acquiri... read more

Justin Trudeau's ship continues to sink
The Toronto Star is reporting that "Growing anti-vaccine and anti-lockdown protests dogged Liberal leader Justin Trudeau on the campaign trail Friday, forcing campaign officials to cancel a Friday evening rally in Bolton, Ont., over safety concerns. It was the latest in a series of tense interactions between Trudeau and protesters, including some who appear to have followed the Liberal leader to campaign events across provinces." America’s F-14 Tomcat Almost Found a Third Life in Great Britain
*Trevor Filseth* *F-14 Tomcat, * That the plane’s usage should be limited to America and America’s largest adversary is a curious twist of fate. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *In the mid-1970s, Britain faced a serious budget headache after costs for the planned Tornado Air Defence Variant (ADV) skyrocketed. At the same time, Britain’s air fleet shrank to less than 100 serviceable aircraft, leading to accusations that the country’s defenses were unprepared for war. “The few have never been fewer,” one British newspaper crowed. Will This Become The Defining Photo Of The Biden Presidency

During the exchange with Doocy, Biden pressed the reporter to acknowledge that he remembered that Donald Trump had made a deal with the Taliban to withdraw -- then hung his head down toward the podium as Doocy pressed him on whether the manner of the withdrawal had been sound. Global call to reduce antimicrobial use in healthy animals
World leaders have called for an urgent reduction in the amount of antimicrobial drugs, including antibiotics, used in food systems. The Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance said countries must stop the use of medically important antimicrobial drugs to promote growth in healthy animals. The request from the group, which was created in November 2020, comes ahead... It's similar to the caution against sanitizing a contaminated field - which is what has replaced hand washing in the 'fight' against Covid -19. You don't want to effectively culture either antibiotic resistant or germicide resistant strains of microbes. Continue Reading
