Will the ‘Taiwan Question’ Give Rise to a World War III Scenario?
[image: undefined] The United States and China are set to go head-to-head over disputes in relation to Taiwan and the South China Sea, with deadly consequences on the immediate horizon. You wouldn’t know it with all the media hype over the US mid-term elections, but the US and China are on a deadly collision path in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. In the last two months, the US military has flown B-52 bombers and carried out its so-called “freedom of navigation” operations in the South China Sea. There have also been instances of US warships sailing through the Taiwan Strait... more »

‘Chaotic’ universal credit led to disabled man’s death, sister tells UN poverty expert
A UN expert has heard how a man with learning difficulties died a month after attempting to take his own life, following a move onto the government’s “chaotic” universal credit benefit system that left him hundreds of pounds in debt. Minister says stopping benefit sanctions would do disabled people ‘a great disservice’

The Whitey Bulger murder: looking bad for the Bureau of Prisons
I'm sure readers are aware of the murder of 89-year-old convict Whitey Bulger at a Federal high-security penitentiary in West Virginia. That was bad enough, and his death has highlighted some serious errors in the way the prison handled his admission. (You'll recall that I was a chaplain at a Federal high-security penitentiary, and know how these things *should* be done. From what I've read, they were not handled correctly at all.) Now comes new information that - if true - makes the Bureau of Prisons look even more guilty of serious errors in handling the late Mr. Bulger. Bosto... more »

Who is the Attorney General?
Neal Katyal and George Conway have an op-ed in *The New York Times* arguing that the appointment of Acting Attorney General Whitaker is illegal and that any actions that he takes are null and void. I want to make one observation about their argument. The Constitution sets forth a way to fill a vacancy created when a Cabinet member resigns, dies, or is fired. In 2014, the Supreme Court held in *Noel Canning* that the Senate gets to decide when that body is in recess and, thus, when the President can make a ... more »

How AMPK, Thought To Suppress Cancer, Actually Helps It Survive
The protein complex AMPK is thought to suppress cancer, by slowing cellular metabolism, but it can also help some tumors grow. But why? A new study says it has solved the mystery. AMPK acts as a fuel gauge for the cell, overseeing energy input and output to keep the cell running smoothly. Similar to a car sensor flashing a low-gas signal or turning off a vehicle’s AC to save energy, AMPK slows down cell growth and changes the cell’s metabolism if the cell’s fuel (nutrients) is low. read more

How They Do It
Donald Trump thinks he won the midterm elections. He completely ignores the results in the House of Representatives and focuses on the Senate. But the number of votes for Senate seats tells a different story. Sabrina Siddiqui writes in *The Guardian*: Among the most eye-catching was a statistic showing Democrats led Republicans by more than 12 million votes in Senate races, and yet still suffered losses on the night and failed to win a majority of seats in the chamber. Constitutional experts said the discrepancy between votes cast and seats won was the result of misplaced ire tha... more »

Close-range air-to-air footage of the Sukhoi Su-57
Russia's attempt to produce a fifth-generation fighter, the Sukhoi Su-57, has apparently not been too successful in technical terms; the aircraft is reputedly not nearly as "stealthy" as it needs to be when measured against the US F-22 Raptor. Also, Russia has announced that it won't put the aircraft into mass production, probably because it can't afford it in large numbers. Nevertheless, it's probably a pretty capable "Generation 4½" fighter, and a dozen will be built for the Russian Air Force. Recently an air-to-air photo shoot was held for the Su-57. New Molecules Similar To Carbohydrates Can Inhibit Enzymes In Infectious Diseases
New molecules similar to carbohydrates have showed the capacity to inhibit the activity of a specific type of glycoside enzymes - and that means inhibiting infectious diseases. Glycosides are essential enzymes to digest carbohydrates but they are also key players in infections caused by pathogens, in anti-bacterial defense and many other vital cellular processes. Syria: Peace Implies Elimination Of The Jihadist Ideology
Although several peace projects are currently circulating in the chanceries, they are not adequate for this sort of war. Those who begin with an amputated analysis of the conflict, yet still believe they are doing the right thing, will not only fail to resolve the problem, but will pave the way for a new war. Eric Hoffer’s *The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movement* is a good book for understanding the nature mass movements. Here’s a passage in which Hoffer suggests that the poorest members of the working class tend to avoid mass movements because they are too busy trying to make a living: Discontent by itself does not invariably create a desire for change. Other factors have to be present before discontent turns into disaffection. One of these is a sense of power. Those who are awed by their surroundings do not think of change, no matter how miserable their condition. ... more »
