"The Great Enemy Of Truth..."
"For the great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie - deliberate,
contrived and dishonest - but the myth - persistent, persuasive, and
unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forebears. We
subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the
comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."

Sunday morning music
Doctor, chemist and notable composer Alexander Borodin was a pretty amazing
person. He made major contributions in the field of organic chemistry, as
well as some outstanding classical music that's an integral part of the
modern repertoire. Among the latter is his opera *Prince Igor*, which
wasn't finished when he died, and was completed by Rimsky-Korsakov,
Glazunov and others. It's frequently performed in Russia and less
frequently in the West.
The *Polovtsian Dances* from Prince Igor have become a standard part of the

*Still Not Working For Them*
“The California Republican Party isn’t salvageable at this time,” wrote
former Assembly Republican leader Kristin Olsen this week. “The Grand Old

*Wildfires need not be disastrous*
*This is from the NYT, no less. I have however omitted the initial throat

The southeastern United States has not lost significant numbers of homes
or lives to fire, despite its vast expanse of the “wildland-urban
interface” — the mixture of rural homes and towns with wild vegetation.
That’s not because the region is immune to fire. It’s because, in part, the
Southeast uses prescribed fire across millions of acres each year to reduce
how much vegetation is left to burn, effectively using intentional fires to
limit out-of-control wild... more »
