Why I voted for proportional representation
I spent 10 years in the legislative press gallery, a front-row seat for the spectacle of B.C. politics. It was mostly — not always — horrifying. Cynical, dishonest and hyper-partisan, an unending election campaign. Collaboration was not impossible, but the system made it really difficult. MLAs, mostly good people, behaved badly. It was sad and infuriating, and demeaning for everyone involved. That’s first-past-the-post. Was The Kerch Strait Kerfuffle A Bridge Too Far For the Ukraine?
*A brief note on the situation in the Ukraine.* It has taken about 60 to 90 days longer than I had anticipated for things in the simmering Ukraine conflict to reach this stage. I was expecting something along the lines of last week's, ill-fated, Ukrainian naval expedition in the Kerch Strait, and even more, maybe in August or September, within several weeks of the World Cup. Though nothing major happened then, the events of recent days are truly serious, and are capable of sparking off more and bigger trouble. To be sure, the Minsk Agreement would appear to effectively be a dead le... more »

Russia seized the Ukrainian vessels and their crews on Sunday near Crimea, the Ukrainian region which Moscow annexed in 2014, over what it said was their illegal entry into Russian waters, which Ukraine denies. *Read more *.... *MIDD... more »

*Kadira Pethiyagoda* *Security, Asia* [image: Reuters] Sri Lankans are more angry over the war and corruption than they are about Beijing's influence. In 2015, when Sri Lanka received relatively rare mention in discussions of world politics, then-President Mahinda Rajapaksa suffered a shock election loss. How the F-14 Tomcat Became the "Bombcat" (Or a Strike Aircraft)
*Charlie Gao* *Security, * The F-14 Tomcat was designed to defend the U.S. Navy’s fleets from practically every airborne threat. While it packed long range AIM-54 Phoenix missiles for defense against bombers carrying standoff missiles, it was no slouch in a dogfight either, although early versions were held back by its TF30 engines in that arena. But for a brief period in the 1990s, the F-14 was used as a strike aircraft. *The Bombcats proved to be rather potent in usage. While some advanced functionality of the pod (e.g., navigation) was not integrated into the F-14, the images... more »

BREAKING: Purity of heart is to will one thing!
*WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2018We hope to return to full expo:* Long ago and far away, we needed the help of logicians. In fact, the time of which we're thinking wasn't that long ago. We're thinking back to the 1990s, when Bill Clinton sat in the White House. We needed the help of logicians during the great, inane Medicare debate which began in 1995. A few years later, we needed the help of logicians when our upper-end journalists began engaging in "creative paraphrase" aimed at Candidate Gore. What *is* the "logic of paraphrase?" What counts as a sensible and fair paraphrase? What... more »

The High Cost of Good Intentions by John Cogan
“Entitlements grow over time because of a force called “the equally worthy claim,” where eligibility for benefits continually expands until programs no longer resemble their initial, honorable intentions.” Entitlements don’t go just to the poor. The word doesn’t mean the same thing to all. Some think it’s a handout, unearned. Others see it as a benefit than can’t be taken away because it is their right. It is a benefit under the law to anyone who qualifies. https://www.policyed.org/perspectives-policy/high-cost-good-intentions/video I’m trying to get a copy of Cogan’s book fr... more »

Without even reading the paper. Because there isn't one. Nor is there any data. It's just some guy claiming he did it, not once but twice. And based on that people are going on tirades about how it violates ethics - well, their subjective notion of ethics, none of which have anything to do with the culture of China. read more
