CCBGB
In the CCBGB ('comments could be going better') stakes, I think the BBC's Diplomatic Correspondent James Landale has all won hands down today - with no need whatsoever for a second people's referendum vote to make certain of that. Two of his tweets have gone down extraordinary badly with the twittering public, even with people who usually disagree about everything else and throw insults at each agree. In fact he seems to have achieved the impossible, bringing the nation together, and even uniting #FBPE types with pro-Brexit types in total condemnation of his 'cheap political poi... more »
To Make Better Translation Algorithms, Look To The Bible
Medicine uses Latin because it is a 'dead' language - the meanings of the words will not change over time. But if you want to modernize translations to different languages, an ancient book may help: The Bible. Tools to translate text between languages are widely available - and rather awful. While they can create literal translations, style is hard to bring across without human intervention. If you tried to read a translation of China's Liu Cixin using a computer, you would miss everything, most importantly a great example of the best science-fiction culture since America of the 195... more »

War Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, Ignorance Is Strength, Nationalism Is UnPatriotic
People forget that Hitler took over the German Workers’ Party and added “National Socialist.” The reason for “National” was that Hitler noticed that revolutions weren’t being started by the workers “oppressed” by Capitalism as Marx has predicted. Hitler noticed that people wouldn’t give their lives to fight for a political/economic cause, but people would give … Continue reading "War Is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, Ignorance Is Strength, Nationalism Is UnPatriotic"

*Wooden Wreath with Bird and Poppy* I took the photo above just a few moments ago. It's of a wreath currently hanging on our front door. I made the wreath out of circles of discarded wood, and carved the little "comfort bird" perched on the wreath. This year, I decided to add a poppy to the wreath, as a mark of respect for all the *naïve and well meaning men and women who have been hoodwinked over the years to fight in wars rigged by the Khazarian bankster Jews*. As readers will learn by reading the concise history written and posted this morning by my blogging colleague, North... more »

On Veteran's Day
Dear Leader: I thought you might like this. This is President Barack Obama cowering from that deadly terrorist known as drizzle. By blowing off our dead on Veterans Day weekend and the 100th anniversary of the WWI Armistice, you showed your true mettle. But you took a huge gamble and risked losing face before the world by playing it safe and blowing off our fallen veterans so the Presidential Pompador wouldn't look like strips of chamois cloth draped over a honeydew melon. But just to show you how reckless you can be when a solo game of golf's on the line, here's an acti...more »
Strategy Without Politics is No Strategy: A Lesson of World War I for the Trump Era
The Belgian newspaper Le Soir reports on the German attack on Belgium on Aug. 4, 1914. (This work is in the public domain in the United States.) The lessons of World War I are many and varied for those who study warfare. To name a few: economic interconnectedness does not avert armed conflict; democratic states are capable of making durable and costly commitments to both war effort and alliances; the decisiveness of battlefield outcome is a central determinant of the sustainability of peace settlements; technological innovation can radically alter the offense-defense balance in mi... more »
When Did World War I End?
New York troops in Corbie, France, celebrate the signing of the Armistice Treaty, Nov. 11, 1918. (Source: Flickr/AP) Today is the centennial Armistice Day, remembered as the day the Great War ended. In a military sense it did, but as a matter of U.S. domestic law, it dragged on for another three years. On November 11, 1918, the Allies and Germany signed the Armistice that ended the remaining fighting on the Western Front. It went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Often an armistice is only a pause, or a ceasefire pending further negotiations, but this... more »

The U.S. Drone War in Pakistan Revisited

Asfandyar Mir, a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford, argues that the drone campaign has proven highly effective at degrading (though not ending) al-Qaeda and other groups in Pakistan. He lays out conditions under which a drone campaign would be effective elsewhere, noting the importance of intelligence and the need for a rapid... more »

Why World War I Started: Germany Wanted to be a Superpower
*Michael Lind* *Security, * Would this new superpower, created in a bloody war of aggression by Berlin, have been a status quo power? This week's Radio 4 *Profile *had a political subject. Usually (though not always) such editions have a reasonably fair spread of views. Not this one though. There was about half a minute of criticism in total in a programme that lasted last nigh on 14 minutes. (It came from a male US conservative.) And the narration was negativity-free too. The lucky lady was 'democratic socialist' US Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Maybe she should recycle parts of it for her reelection campaign?

Wilson reminds us, this era will not be remembered for its wars or technological advances but as the time when men and women stood by and either passively endorsed or actively... more »

In Chapter 1, “Consciousness as a Biological Problem,” Searle explains how brain research can proceed to solve the problem of consciousness. Here’s an excerpt: The brain is an organ like any other; it is an organic machine. Consciousness is caused by lower-level neuronal processes in the brain and is itself a feature of the brain. Because it is a feature that emerges from certain neuronal activities, we can think of it as an “emergent property” of the brain. An emergent property of a system is one that is cau... more »

Today marks the one hundredth anniversary of the end of The Great War. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars. And it's true that, since 1945, there have been no world wars. But there have been plenty of proxy wars -- in Korea, in Vietnam and in Afghanistan -- the longest war of the modern era. The Great War was supposed to Make The World Safe For Democracy. And today democracy is threatened around the world. So, what are we to make of today? Some might say that we've made precious little progress. And, on my darker days, I'm inclined to agree. Perhaps we've just been luck... more »

The good news is that the fracking-killing Proposition 112 did not pass, but the bad news is that it got 43% of the votes, which in political terms is a lot.
