Republicans Are In A State Of Denial About What's Headed Their Way In November

In fact, Tuesday saw 4 special elections in very red districts that had gone to Trump in 2016 by very wide margins. IF THERE'S A SHUTDOWN, THE PUBLIC WILL PROBABLY BLAME DEMOCRATS -- BUT DOES IT REALLY MATTER? (updated)
A government shutdown is imminent, the blame game has started, and a lot of liberals and Democrats are angrily insisting that no reasonable person could possibly blame anyone other than the Republicans for what's happening -- Republicans control the White House and both houses of Congress, the Republican president has signaled his support for a fix saving the Dreamers only to go back on his word, and Republicans have cynically used both the DACA and CHIP programs as bargaining chips. Those are the Democratic arguments, but I don't think the public will buy them. On the other hand, ... more »

The Worst President Ever? That Title Belongs to Woodrow Wilson.
*Robert W. Merry* *History, * The reasons are obvious. *First, Wilson conducted the war in ways that devastated the home front. Prices shot up into double digits, and then came a potent economic recession that lasted three years. He accepted the suppression of civil liberties by his notorious attorney general, A. If they pass a deal on DACA, it's a win for both sides of the aisle and thousands of ‘Dreamers,’ but a loss for millions of undocumented immigrants.
Is the FBI's latest probe of the Clinton Foundation a 'witch hunt' – or something more?

The foundation initially seemed well-suited for cleaning up Bill Clinton's legacy after the Monica Lewinsky scandal's ugliness. That's no longer true.
The Egyptian-Eritrean Military Axis Might Make The Horn Of Africa Crisis Explode
Egypt and Eritrea both deny that any troops were sent to Sawa, but some reports indicate that this move was actually in response to Turkey clinching a deal to develop the Sudanese island of Suakin near Port Sudan late last year. Czech lawmakers hand out the prime minister to police
*111 out of 180 lawmakers in the room agree with the prosecution* The Czech Parliament has repeated the four-months-old performance when it was deciding whether the Slovak-born billionaire prime minister Babiš (ANO) and his main aide and boss of ANO's lawmakers Mr Faltýnek would be stripped of their immunity. Both men have regained the immunity when their movement won the October elections with 30% of the votes and the prosecution of these two men had to stop and a new permission from the Parliament was needed. China's New Aircraft Carrier Will Have "Electromagnetic Catapults for Fighter Jets"
*Asia Times* *Security, Asia* Only America has such technology right now. China will use one or more electromagnetic catapults for fighter jets on its third aircraft carrier, the Beijing-based Global Times has revealed, citing an anonymous expert within the military. The state-of-the-art catapults, which use a linear induction motor, were chosen instead of conventional steam-driven designs after senior People’s Liberation Army (PLA) officers watched a test flight by a fighter plane. Beijing-based naval expert Li Jie said steam-driven catapults were generally preferred over elec... more »
China Wants Missile Defenses To Stop India (And Kill Satellites)
*Doug Tsuruoka* *Security, * The US must adjust to the idea of China being a player in anti-missile technology. India conducted a successful test of its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), a nuclear-capable Agni-5, on Thursday, underscoring a potential threat to China as well as Pakistan. China is also within range of nuclear-armed North Korean missiles and Japan is mulling whether it should develop similar capabilities. Señor Trumpanzee-- Working Class Hero?
Trump makes a big deal about keeping his campaign promises. And, unfortunately, the ones he *wants* to keep, he does try to keep. Sometimes the courts and occasionally, even Congress, keeps him from keeping the worst of them. His excuse for torpedoing the bipartisan DACA fix was that it flew in the face of one of his ugly outbursts of bigotry during the campaign. Now Ryan and McConnell are using his bizarre and incoherent approach as an excuse for not bringing popular DACA fixes to the floor of each house for a vote. But on promise that was very specific, consistent, loud and very... more »

The Slow Death of Democracy in the United States
A paper by Martin Gilens and Benjamin Page entitled "Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups and Average Citizens" provides us with an interesting analysis of who is really in control of American public policy, an issue that many of us already suspect is controlled by a small group of Americans. There are four theoretical traditions in the study of American politics, each with a different set of actors who form a critical role in determining government policies: 1.) *Majoritarian Electoral Democracy*: this tradition attributes government policies to the colle... more »

Schopenhauer On Dialectic and Logic
Arthur SchopenhauerIn his essay, “The Art of Controversy,” Arthur Schopenhauer says that the word “dialectic” was first used by Plato. By “dialectic,” Plato means the regular employment of the reason, and skill in the practice of it. Aristotle has used “dialectic,” as well as “logic” in the same sense. But “dialectic” seems to be an older word than “logic.” According to Schopenhauer, such usage of “dialectic” and “logic” has lasted through the medieval period to the modern times. He credits Immanuel Kant for using the word “dialectic” in a bad sense for the first time. Here’s an e... more »

I already checked the top three alphabets plus Huff and Puff and none of them have anything to say about this memo. Not. One. Word. *More:* *Following video:* Chris Farrell, Judicial Watch Director of Investiga... more »
Nazis In Unpop Culture
A month or so ago, rock journalist Steve Knopper called me to discuss how punk music pushed back against Nazis who tried infiltrating the early anarchistic punk music scene. Fascists in London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York seemed drawn to the scene's iconography, rowdiness and anti-establishment perspective. Soon after I went off to Thailand-- the Land of Smiles-- and forgot all about it. This week Steve's story, Nazi Punks F**k Off: How Black Flag, Bad Brains, and More Took Back Their Scene from White Supremacists was published by *GQ*. First paragraph: Every hardcore b... more »

One Year In, President Trump Continues US Expansive Intervention Overseas
[image: undefined] Donald Trump took office as president of the United States one year ago this week. It is a good time to evaluate what his leadership has meant for US foreign policy. Has Trump moved US foreign policy toward noninterventionism as some people had hoped he would due to some of Trump’s comments in the presidential campaign? Or has Trump as president continued or even expanded the interventionist foreign policy he inherited? Lawdog has a voice!
Last year, my buddy Lawdog published two volumes of his memoirs. The first, "The Lawdog Files", dealt with his law enforcement experiences. I wrote about it at the time, here and here. The second, "The Lawdog Files: African Adventures", dealt with his upbringing in Africa, and added a few more modern stories to his tally. I had the honor of writing the foreword for that volume. I discussed it here. Now an audiobook version of "The Lawdog Files" has been released - and it's gone straight to #1 in Amazon.com's "Business & Professional Humor" category . I repeat what I said a... more »

Chet Raymo, “What Not to Believe”
*“What Not to Believe”* by Chet Raymo “In Stacy Schiff's biography of Cleopatra, I came across this epigraph from Euripides: "Man's most valuable trait is a judicious sense of what not to believe." I have no idea which of Euripides' plays the quote is from, but it strikes me as a suitable source for reflection. Credulity is the default state of a human life. Children are born to believe, to accept as true what they are told by adults. An innate credulity has survival value in a dangerous world. If a grown-up says "There are crocodiles in the river," it is probably best to stay out ... more »
