This is going to be rather short because there is really nothing new to report here. The Laginas boys are still digging up the island, but now they have another new, high-tech piece of equipment that will create a relatively huge hole in the island. This will make access to the bottom easier and maybe a little safer for the divers Boring operations a long time ago... and yes, I said "Boring operations," for a very good reason.who will be going down into it but won’t yield anything of importance. The Problem with Tories and Social Media
After Chris Grayling's trouble-free reign as Tory party chair - a first for him - new boy Brandon Lewis graced the Sunday papers and *Andrew Marr* with his message of hope. Hope, that is, if you're a Tory activist. Since it was recently revealed that numbers were far worse than any Labour activist rooted for, the pressure is on our hotel-bothering chair to stymie the decline and start matching the overwhelming human resources the Tories' opponents can bring to bear. The first yank of the turn around wheel involves sorting out the social media strategy, so reports the *Sunday Telegr... more »

Ambitious Democrats Decide How To Vote On The Republican FISA Bill
*Thanks to Schumer, Arizona won't have a good choice in November* On Thursday, after the FISA vote, we saw how the whole Republican wing of the Democratic Party abandoned the Democrats and voted with Trump and Paul Ryan to expand spying. There had been enough principled Republicans who refused to vote for the bill to have killed it had the Blue Dogs and New Dems not saved it. Today lets look at it from teh perspective of Democrats itrying to move into other jobs and how they voted. First off wretched New Dem John Delaney (D-MD), a declared-- if ridiculous-- candidate for president.... more »

Trump’s Comment Should Outrage Us All
One of my favorite things to do at the beginning of each semester is to review the class rosters and scan all my students’ beautiful names-names like Samrawit, Priyanka, and Chukwuemeka to name a few. That is because I teach at Montgomery College in Takoma Park, Maryland. Out of the approximately 60,000 students who will take classes this year, 159 different countries will be represented, including countries that President Trump called “shitholes.”

BWorld 179, Federalism dream vs centralized government
* This is my article in BusinessWorld last January 5. Repeated calls for federalism by the Duterte administration actually point to more centralization of the national government — the complete opposite of what they’re advocating. Here are some examples. 1. National taxes have been rising, instead of declining, which could have helped prepare federal states to have their own income and value-added taxes, etc. Instead of lowering the top marginal income tax rate of 32%, it was even raised to 35%. Instead of reducing the VAT to 10% or 8% with few exemptions, the 12% was retained but... more »

The Goals of DACA

Ending chain migration and anchor babies at the same time as you grant limited residential status for those who filed under DACA is clearly insufficient, as most of us have predicted. It’s Official PM Abadi and VP Maliki Will Run Separately In 2018 Elections
The Dawa Party officially announced what many were expecting the last month or so. The party said that it would not run in the 2018 elections, thus allowing its members to run separately. That meant that Prime Minister Haidar Abadi could run on his Nasr list and Vice President Nouri al-Maliki could maintain his State of Law. The party made this decision rather than break apart. As Harith Hasan al-Qarawee pointed out, Dawa feels that it needs to maintain control of the premiership to remain relevant. It therefore thought it best to keep the façade of unity despite the deep divide b... more »

The reporters and editors had to know that some of them were fake, but the interest was there, the stories were there and the bottom line is that newspapers need to make money. Hype a story that doesn’t deserve it, add details that the reporters invent and a few quotes to make the story better or just make it up completely. Aurora, Texas in the early 1970s.
