We can't all be perfect

One way of putting the BBC’s political bias into perspective is to compare the BBC’s overt Obama worship with the BBC’s wall-to-wall anti-Trump narrative, which replaced it even before The Donald had won the presidency. I accept that a modicum of cynicism crept in towards the end of Obama’s second term, so it’s possible that the more knee-jerk excesses of the BBC’s Trump-bashing will abate one day. Such hidebound attitudes obscure sensible reporting. It was bizarre to watch an Iranian delivering some home-truths on the state of his country, while the panel of western left-liberal c... more »

As so often with BBC reports you have to go elsewhere to find the context to the news, including answers to such questions as 'Is the US move merely a whim of Donald Trump's?'. The answer to that question turns out to be 'no'. The White House is merely joining the E.U., which sanctioned Ayatollah Larijani in 2012 for personally approving and overseeing... more »

There's been a lot of sound and fury -- particularly from Tim Horton's franchisees -- about Ontario's recent minimum wage hike. But, Alan Freeman writes, the raise makes perfect sense: If you go past the hysterical outpourings from the likes of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business — which specializes in crying wolf every time there’s a talk of improving the Canada Pension Plan or making any small improvement in the lives of employees — the overall impacts of the minimum wage hike for the economy are quite small. How Just One Simple Human Error Almost Destroyed a Missile Submarine

A loss of propulsion, unexpected flooding, or trouble with reactors or weapons can doom a sub crew to a watery grave. Also, it’s a good idea to, like, close the hatches before you dive. Call it a lesson learned for the Indian navy, which managed to put the country’s first nuclear-missile submarine, the $2.9 billion INS Arihant, out of commission in the most boneheaded way possible. "Sculpted by stellar winds and radiation, the star factory known as Messier 17 lies some 5,500 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation Sagittarius. At that distance, this degree wide field of view spans almost 100 light-years, courtesy of ESO's new VLT Survey Telescope and OmegaCAM. "Fools And Knaves..."

"In the mass of mankind, I fear, there is too great a majority of fools and knaves; who, singly from their number, must to a certain degree be respected, though they are by no means respectable." - Philip Stanhope

North Korea Plans to Defeat the U.S. Army in a War. Here's How.

Michael Peck at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, Asia* North Korea seems to believe that it can win using the same tactics that Chinese troops successfully employed in the Korean War. Normal military doctrine says that an attacker should outnumber the defender by at least three to one at the point of attack. But since when is North Korea normal? The Korean People's Army (KPA) believes that it only needs to amass a two to one edge on the battlefield to defeat U.S. and South Korean troops. What's more, North Korea seems to believe that it can win using the same tactics that Chinese troops successfully e... more »

China May Have Tested a Ballistic Missile That Could Target Taiwan, Report States

Zachary Keck at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Zachary Keck* *Security, Asia* What will Taipei do? China may have recently tested a ballistic missile that is said to target Taiwan. This week, the Hong Kong–based *South China Morning Post* reported that the Chinese military’s official newspaper had posted images and a video of what appeared to be a test of the DF-16 or its predecessor missile, the DF-11. The *People’s Liberation Army Daily*, which is the name of the military paper, did not specify when the tests had been carried out. “The missiles appeared to be either Type DF-11 or DF-16 mobile-launched missiles with rang... more »

Could This Japanese Jet Fighter Have Won the Pacific War?

Michael Peck at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Michael Peck* *History, Asia* A World War II mystery revealed. It is a fallacy that Germany was the only nation to develop combat jets in World War II. In truth, while Germany had the most advanced technology, all of the major powers had jet aircraft projects during World War II, including the United States, Britain, Russia, Italy and Japan. The most well-known Japanese jet—and the only one that saw combat—was the Okha, a rocket-propelled and human-piloted kamikaze. But another Japanese jet actually flew before the war ended, and would have seen combat had it continued: the Nak... more »

You Can Build Your Very Own Glock, AR-15 or AK-47

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * Yes, this is real. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the agency that regulates gun ownership in the United States, recognizes that individuals have a historical right to make their own firearms. While this may have been common in the eighteenth century, it is only recently becoming popular again due to the high tolerances of modern machinery and the widespread availability of powered tools. As a result Americans have the ability to make a wide variety of firearms, from pistols to semiautomatic rifles, in their own homes. Modern... more »

Germany Could Arm Europe with Some Truly Super Submarines

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Europe* And they are coming just in the nick of time. Germany’s submarine fleet has been going through a rough patch lately. By the end of 2017, all six of the Type 212A submarines, which use hydrogen PEM fuel cells for super quiet Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP), were either undergoing trials and overhauls or awaiting repairs for unexpected accidents—a process slowed to a glacial pace due to a failure to procure spare parts in advance. Nonetheless, on the long term both German submariners and the Type 212’s manufacturer have reason for cheer. Six... more »

How to End U.S. Strategic Failure in the Middle East

Daniel L. Davis at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Daniel L. Davis* *Security, Middle East* The Trump administration’s new plan for Afghanistan will simply add four more years to the strategic futility that we’ve endured since 2001. While most of the country has been fixated on issues surrounding the North Korean nuclear crisis, other foreign-policy issues of real importance have been passing unnoticed—and are moving in the wrong direction. U.S. military decisions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria threaten to extend our near-unbroken record of earning strategic failure well into the future. In Afghanistan, Vice President Pence just... more »

Tucker Carlson, Ann Coulter Force Trump Back Right on Immigration

Curt Mills at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Curt Mills* *Politics, North America* [image: Fox personality Tucker Carlson speaks at the 2017 Business Insider Ignition: Future of Media conference in New York] The death of “Trumpism without Trump” seems greatly exaggerated. For those hoping that President Donald Trump was marching toward a more conventional presidency, Wednesday provided the best day of news in months. Not only had former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon been excised by the president himself from the official Trump movement, but he’d also been defrocked from *Breitbart News*, an organization he’d o... more »

Who Attacked a Russian Military Base with a 'Swarm' Strike?

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Middle East* [image: A Russian Pantsir-S1 missile and artillery weapon system fires during a demonstration at the international military-technical forum] The next revolution in military affairs? Russia is pointing fingers in all directions as it attempts to decipher who, exactly, attacked the Khmeimim air base and Tartus naval base in Syria by deploying a massed flight of what appear to have been home-made GPS-guided drones. The coordinated attack marks the first time that drones have been used en masse—and may well mark a dangerous new moment in the ... more »

Don't Be Fooled: North Korea Still Wants to Conquer South Korea

Wallace C. Gregson at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Wallace C. Gregson* *Security, Asia* [image: A concrete border is seen as a South Korean soldier stands guard at the truce village of Panmunjom] And the United States needs to step up to the plate to prevent it. Delegations from North and South Korea met for the first time in two years at the Truce Village in Panmunjom. Reports indicate that agreement was reached for the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) to send a delegation composed of athletes, a martial arts demonstration team, high-level officials, supporters and journalists to the Olympics in Pyeongchang.
