Donald Trump's tweets are now presidential records
Shontavia Johnson, Professor of Intellectual Property Law, Drake University at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 33 minutes ago
By many accounts, Donald Trump’s bold use of Twitter helped him get the attention and votes necessary to win a presidential race few initially thought he could. Given Trump’s affinity for the social media platform, it was unsurprising that tweets began streaming from his @realDonaldTrump account before noon on Inauguration Day. Trump’s first tweets as president included snippets of his inauguration speech, simple thank yous to supporters and a short clip of the Freedom Ball dance he shared with his wife. Within 24 hours, however, the new president stumbled up against complicated ... more »

As the New England Patriots’ 10th appearance in a Super Bowl approaches, sports fans are eager to see the legendary pairing of quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick take on the Atlanta Falcons. Whatever the Patriots accomplish, though, won’t be thanks to all that fancy new technology assisting the Falcons and other NFL teams. Since early October, Belichick has been limiting his use of his NFL-issued Microsoft Surface tablet and its related technological systems. The best legal arguments against Trump's immigration ban
Steven Mulroy, Law Professor in Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Election Law, University of Memphis at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 5 hours ago
Is President Trump’s recent executive order on immigrants and refugees legal? It’s a surprisingly tricky question. The order arguably violates both a federal statute and one or more sections of the Constitution – depending on whether the immigrant is already in the U.S. In the end, opponents’ best hope for undoing the order might rest on the separation of church and state. Trump’s order bars the entry of any refugee for 120 days, and Syrian refugees indefinitely. It also bans citizens of Iraq, Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya and Yemen from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Thi... more »

WILL THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH BECOME PART OF THE RIGHT-WING MEDIA?
This Media Matters story by Matt Gertz deserves more attention: Two executive orders signed by President Donald Trump last week include clauses that seem designed to provide Breitbart.com and other xenophobic right-wing media outlets with fearmongering content about the supposed criminality and dangerousness of immigrants, particularly Muslim ones. A little-noticed clause in Trump’s executive order temporarily banning nationals from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States and barring admission of refugees, signed Friday, states that ... the federal governme... more »
Scott reviews Moonlight; his commenters muse!
*TUESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2017Solomon savages Maddow:* After seeing Manchester by the Sea, then Moonlight, we've come to believe that we've discovered the oddest place in the whole world of modern mainstream journalism. The oddest place in that world is the intersection between 1) an A. O. Scott review in the New York Times; 2) comments by Scott's readers; and 3) the marks reviewers were told to hit in the film's press release. This is especially true if the film in question concerns matters of race, or can be made to seem so, and if the film is critically favored. In such circumstanc... more »

A primitive, non-photosynthesizing microbe,* Methanospirillum hungatei*, which is thought to have existed since before the development of photosynthesis, possess genes similar to those that play a role in photosynthesis, finds a new study. Two Harvard men claim to have produced metallic hydrogen
My former colleague (and the superhero who believes that love has no borders, nationality, or gender: don't worry, at the end of the film, your humble correspondent punishes the nasty illegal immigrant dragon for its murder of Ike and others) Isaac Silvera and his younger collaborator Ranga Dias claim to have achieved the holy grail of high-pressure physics: to turn hydrogen into a metal. The cores of Jupiter and Saturn may be full of solid hydrogen and solid helium. The achievement was reported in Science: Observation of the Wigner-Huntington transition to metallic hydrogen -------... more »
A young scientist’s quest for clean water
Deepika Kurup has been determined to solve the global water crisis since she was 14 years old, after she saw kids outside her grandparents’ house in India drinking water that looked too dirty even to touch. Her research began in her family kitchen — and eventually led to a major science prize. Hear how this teenage scientist developed a cost-effective, eco-friendly way to purify water.
Burnt Hill Fort
*[image: Burnt Hill Fort in Dark Ages Scotland Was Likely the Stronghold of the Mysterious Rheged Kingdom]* I would like to see this vitrification actually demonstrated. We have a timber and stone assemblage on a hill top. That at least could burn slowly over several days. Where i am uncomfortable is in the heat level. wood gets up to 600 degrees at best and that is too low to melt rock. It will crack rock all the time though and this often confirms simple camp sites. New President, New World
What is completely valid is that we need a completely new global arrangement. The current system arose out of the Second world War and was not properly reset after the cold War and then after the emergence of a healthy China. What Donald is telling everyone is that it all must be renegotiated and making everyone think the unthinkable. Maybe we have better solutions to hand. After all that is what must happen to Obamacare and many have better solutions elswhere. It is also obvious that he will actually address it all.
