Auckland world’s fourth-hardest place to buy a house
Yes friends, the bad news for all those living anywhere between Pokeno and Wellsford (or wanting to) is that the Auckland housing market is now the fourth-most unaffordable in all the places in the world that are measured by the study out this morning. Which is a lot. And Tauranga – Tauranga, with ample land around it on which to spread! -- is not far behind. Frightening! What the new study by Demographia confirms is that (as measured by comparing the median house price in a city to the median salary enjoyed by that city’s residents), Aucklanders have the fourth-most expensive ... more »

5 Killer Weapons The U.S. Military Never Built
A-12 Avenger (YouTube) *Robert Farley, National Interest:* *Stealth Bombers Flying from Aircraft Carriers: 5 Killer Weapons the U.S. Military Never Built* Weapons die for all kinds of different reasons. Sometimes they happen at the wrong time, either in the midst of defense austerity, or with the wrong constellation of personnel. Sometimes they fall victim to the byzantine bureaucracy of the Pentagon, or to turf fights between the services. And sometimes they die because they were a bad idea in the first place. For the same reasons, bad defense systems can often survive the most in... more »
Trump's First 100 Days
[image: trump-s-first-100-days] Prior to entering the White House, Donald Trump pledged an energetic “100-day action plan to Make America Great Again.” How much will he be able to accomplish, and how will his accomplishments compare to his promises? To shed light on these questions, we survey President Trump’s executive orders and other actions as president in the following chronology, updated daily.
How Dangerous Is Trump's Mental Illness For The Country?
First everyone was mocking the size of his small... hands. Now they're mocking the size of the small turnout for his bleak inauguration. And this morning, on day two of the Age of Trump, *Meet The Press* viewers sat around pondering the relationship between "alternative facts" and lies. Trump and his sad-sack paid propagandists can claim there were a million or a million and a half people at his inauguration all they want but that won't make the pictures go away. Glaslighting generally doesn't work as well on people with 3 digit IQs as it does on Trump voters. And, as David Frum ... more »

Taking off from the paper by a friend and fellow columnist Romy Bernardo’s “Wishes for the economy in 2017” last Monday, this paper will make some raw projections of GDP size until 2026. The base document is the IMF’s World Economic Outlook (WEO), October 2016 database. In the table below, GDP size is based on purchasing power parity (PPP) values, not nominal or current values. Actual data for 2006, 2016, and 2021 are IMF projections. Now this paper will take a longer but very raw view by projecting potential GDP size by... more »

"We May Know..."
"We may know that the work we continue to put off doing will be bad. Worse, however, is the work we never do. A work that's finished is at least finished. It may be poor, but it exists, like the miserable plant in the lone flowerpot of my neighbor who's crippled. That plant is her happiness, and sometimes it's even mine. What I write, bad as it is, may provide some hurt or sad soul a few moments of distraction from something worse. While millions of people were gathering to protest his presidency yesterday, Donald Trump went to CIA headquarters and delivered remarks that would be considered bizarre and rambling if they weren't just like every campaign speech he gave that didn't involve a Teleprompter. What Trump delivered Saturday was a campaign-style, stream-of-consciousness airing of grievances -- at the Senate for delaying confirmation of his nominees; at critics for questioning whether he is smart and vigorous; and at journalists, whom he called “the most dishonest human beings on earth” and accused of lyi... more »

Trump claims media 'dishonest' over crowd photos per BBC News

The Positive Energy And Love Of The Bernie Sanders Rallies Swept America Today
This isn't going to surprise any Richard Florida followers but Brookings' Mark Muro observed, soon after the election, that "[t]he less-than-500 counties that Hillary Clinton carried nationwide encompassed a massive 64 percent of America’s economic activity as measured by total output in 2015. By contrast, the more-than-2,600 counties that Donald Trump won generated just 36 percent of the country’s output-- just a little more than one-third of the nation’s economic activity." It's also completely unprecedented for a losing presidential candidate to have won so large a share of th... more »

President Trump’s Defense and Homeland Security Secretaries Have Been Sworn In
*New York Times*: *Senate Confirms Mattis at Defense and Kelly for Homeland Security* WASHINGTON — Just hours after President Trump was sworn into office, the Senate on Friday confirmed two nominees for critical national security positions, approving James N. Mattis as defense secretary and John F. Kelly as homeland security secretary. Republicans had hoped to approve far more than two nominees on Mr. Trump’s first day in office, but that process has been delayed in part because several of the nominees have been slow in filing ethics disclosures, prompting protests by Senate Demo... more »
Kahlil Gibran, "The Seven Selves"
"The Seven Selves" by Kahlil Gibran "In the stillest hour of the night, as I lay half asleep, my seven selves sat together and thus conversed in whisper: First Self: Here, in this madman, I have dwelt all these years, with naught to do but renew his pain by day and recreate his sorrow by night. I can bear my fate no longer, and now I rebel. Second Self: Yours is a better lot than mine, brother, for it is given to me to be this madman's joyous self. I laugh his laughter and sing his happy hours, and with thrice winged feet I dance his brighter thoughts. It is I that would rebel aga... more »

Musical Interlude: Irving Berlin, “Let's Face The Music And Dance”
- Irving Berlin, “Let's Face The Music And Dance”, Sung by Nat King Cole *“Let's Face The Music And Dance”* “There may be trouble ahead, But while there's moonlight and music and love and romance, Let's face the music and dance. Before the fiddlers have fled, Before they ask us to pay the bill, And while we still have the chance, Let's face the music and dance. Soon, we'll be without the moon, Humming a different tune, And then, there may be tear drops to shed. So while there's moonlight and music and love and romance, Let's face the music and dance. Let's face the music and dance. So... more »
The Poet: Arthur O’Shaughnessy, "Music and Moonlight"
*"Music and Moonlight"* "We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone seabreakers, And sitting by desolate streams; World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world forever, it seems… We, in the ages lying In the buried past of the earth, Built Ninevah with our sighing, And Babel itself in our mirth; And o’erthrew them with prophesying To the old of the new world’s worth; For each age is a dream that is dying, Or one that is coming to birth." - Arthur O’Shaughnessy, "Music and Moonlight" (1874)
"Searchers"
*"Searchers"* "Some people do not have to search- they find their niche early in life and rest there, seemingly contented and resigned. They do not seem to ask much of life, sometimes they do not seem to take it seriously. At times I envy them, but usually I do not understand them- seldom do they understand me. I am one of the searchers. There are, I believe, millions of us. We are not unhappy, but neither are we really content. We continue to explore life, hoping to uncover its ultimate secret. We continue to explore ourselves, hoping to understand. We like to walk along ... more »

Those who admire Nazi "competence." (Bet you know some)
* == Nazi-obsessed nincompoops ==* There are dozens of reasons why men and women of the ‘Greatest Generation’ – those who endured a Depression, crushed Hitler, contained communism, built a spectacular economy, went to the Moon, then started overcoming 6000 years of bad habits like racism, sexism and all that… all while taxing the rich, with strong unions and admiring Franklin Roosevelt -- would deem “patriotic” Republicans as anything but. Certainly not the sense of seeking the long-term benefit of a healthy and revolutionary republic. It isn’t just the ceaseless whining, or the ... more »

Why I Demonstrated Today at My State Capitol
I demonstrated today against the Trump presidency, but not because I think Russians stole the election on his behalf. I don't believe the Russians stole the election. Rather, I think Trump was the Archie Bunker candidate for many Americans. His populist promises resonated with white, middle-America, but I think its clear from his political appointments that Trump's allegiances are to Wall Street, especially Goldman Sachs. Trump's political appointments are one of the reasons I demonstrated today. See my discussion here http://majiasblog.blogspot.com/2016/12/united-states-of-goldma... more »
